So proud and honored to be the coach of Michael Shuster who just got off the phone with Coach Harbaugh and committed to Michigan!

2016 QB from Camp Hill, PA

edit: Lorenz from 247 says he's hearing it's as a PWO

Does the moment of worry that Michigan might have used a scholarship on a no-name recruit really get your heart going?

"Oh my God, Michigan signed a less-than-ideal recruit!  Dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!"

While you guys are not wrong, it is worth pointing out that unless one of the current scholarships is used on a QB who is solid, then for practical purposes, we have 0 QBs on the roster instead of 8. Thus, QB would be a bigger need then the other spots we have needs, as QB is the most important position. Not saying there is not at least 1 on the roster, but if hypothetical QB commit who would be scholarship #9 would also be the best QB, then it makes sense to take hypothetical QB as that fills a bigger need. Also, QBs transfer so much in the NCAA that if someone like Peters shows up and is the man, we probably would have less than 8 QBs shortly thereafter.

The problem is that you never have any way of knowing who will pan out and who won't.  So while you're right that if all 8 of our current QBs are bad, it would be worth taking one right now, no one gets to know that information until August/September 2016.  Instead, you have to work in probabilities of the current guys working out, and with 8 QBs -- some highly regarded -- the probability that one works out is very high.

Good point. They are definetely working in probabilities and the probabilities seem high from the outside. Usual caveats obviously apply that there might already be less than 8 internally and amongst those 8, the coaches might not belive some number of them will figure it out. Rudock beating out all Qbs eligible to play this year is not ideal for them when we have evidence that 5th year transfers are not promised starting/contributing roles (Lyons). Some are younger so it may not be an indictment on their probabilities of success as much.

Basically if Taysom Hill or whoever shows up in 6 months it's possible that player is filling the biggest need.

If Rudock beat out all 8 QB's we have then for godsake TAKE AS MANY QB'S AS POSSIBLE because we really have zero QB's!

I am sick of seeing other teams start freshmen and sophmore wonders tha rack up ridiculous yards while we just make up excuses why this just isn't possible.

this says more about your cats. Dogs are pack animals, while cats are independent (e.g. hunting for prey).

Cats are so mysterious, but it sounds like you've got some cool, mellow cats!

I'll wait until any of the Michigan recruiting experts announce this...and this has to be a walk-on.  You wouldn't take a scholarship on an unknown like this.

They updated the article.  He received scholarship offers from other programs but is a PWO.

The Lions’ pro-style quarterback came away from Ann Arbor with an invitation from head coach Jim Harbaugh and, according to Camp Hill head coach Frank Gay, Shuster notified Harbaugh on Thursday that he would join the Big Ten power next season as a preferred walk-on.

Shuster, Camp Hill’s four-year starter, had drawn interest from Duke, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and others. Several FCS programs were lining up with scholarship offers, as well.

If I were a PWO quarterback, with only a few lower-level offers, and had the resources to pay my way through U-M, I would jump immediately at an offer to train under JH for 1-3 years, and see if my status improves enough to transfer to a D-1 program on scholly to try to reach my maximum potential.  Perhaps a grad transfer after year 3 which would leave 3 yrs of eligibility.
