Hello: Jeremy Clark

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on

Per TomVH:

Kentucky S Jeremy Clark has decided to accept Michigan's offer to greyshirt.

TomVH Tom VanHaaren

Clark said he will be a part of this class if Jarrod Wilson goes elsewhere, and will greyshirt if Wilson commits to Michigan.

Offers from Ohio, Toledo, NC State, Illinois, CMU, Ball St, Akron

Hoke recruiting is now leading to kids willing to greyshirt based upon the arrival of other players. Obviously punctuates the point becoming clear as of late: players are committing now based upon wanting to play with the incoming talent.

Hello: Jeremy Clark.

[edit] well now the above just looks silly.  so i have to add something.  and that something is that i'm glad he liked michigan so much that he would take a greyshirt offer.  i know we all move michigan that much.  good to see that has an effect on others.

If he's not taking a full course load (not sure what the threshold he has to be under is) then 2012 won't count against his eligibility and he can still practice with the team (not sure about playing). For all intents and purposes, consider him a 2013 early enrollee.

What this means:

He'll probably come in in 2012 but will pay his own way fall semester. He'd then go on scholarship January 2013, so he's technically going to be a 2013 kid.

He got this offer after blowing up our camp so the coaches have been able to see him work up-close. Also re: low ratings, he's had a major growth spurt this past year and Scout has said already not to pay attention to his 2-star rating, that he needs to be re-evaluated. Solid sleeper pickup.

And this is not nefarious in the way that the SEC has made grey shirts nefarious.  If you do it up front the kid knows he will be paying his own way for a semester with the scholi to follow.

Greyshirting has gotten a bad name, however, when schools oversign, telling all the incoming kids that they have a spot only to rescind a kid's scholarship after he is already on campus.

SEC has kids enroll and then goes "hey, take less classes and here's a financial aid form you need to fill out asap." Michigan told him he shares a scholarship offer with another player, winner take all. huge difference.

he can get a full ride elsewhere but is willing to sacrifice to go to michigan. welcome jeremy.

that being said, we still better get wilson.

Great news.  Welcome to Ann Arbor!  Like someone said on the previous thread, he supposedly killed it at the UM camp.  I can already picture a 6'4 220lb safety destroying people over the middle and in run support.

heard good things about his performance at camp and love his size.  very solid pickup and I don't look down at hoke for the grey shirt thing at all I thnik this is how it should be used.  You have a kid you like and he wants to commit, but you need the scholorship for someoen else so you give the kid the option and let him make the chioce he thinks is best for him.

one thing that I wounder is with that size and speed why isn't he a WR? No ball skills?

Welcome aboard sir!  This is a kid that really wants to be a michigan wolverine as exhibited by his flexibility regarding Wilson's situation.  Congrats to the coaching staff for what sounds like a great pick-up and by all accounts it being done the right way in terms of transparency.

Could he theoretically wait to enroll until Winter semester and become part of the 2013 class? (I.E. skip the fall semester.)  As a student, I would rather save the money from paying my way for the first semester and keep another year of eligibility down the road (if that is the case).

He could also take a partial course load at a prep school or JuCo and come to AA in January and not lose any eligibility but I don't see that being mentioned as an option. Question which I can't seem to find...Could he play in 2012 without losing his eligibility year? I believe the answer is no but worth checking.

Very good addition. Congratulations, Jeremy! Great pickup for the Maize and Blue

Stupid looking forward question: With this amazing class, are we gonna have not as many scholarships available for 2013?

Depends on how many guys don't get fifth years next season. As of now, we'll have 18 seniors next year but it's yet to be seen how many of the 11 who have redshirted are invited back. It's a fair question but we won't know for a while how many exactly will be available.

Is this a Jonas Mouton situation or is he expected to stay at saftey 6' 4" 200lbs is pretty big for a junior safety.

The whole you get the schollie if Wilson doesn't commit seems strange as well.   If a kid accepts a grayshirt I would just say we'll see after signing day where we stand and then after summer workouts.  Why box yourself in?   Say Wilson doesn't come and than S. Diggs says he wants to come, but you already gave it away?

tage Michigan--and other schools that are really SCHOOLS--can exploit. May be a lot of talented kids wishing to come here for the degree as well as football who would/will be willing to wait a year and get the academic thing going. Am I reading this right? If so, great angle. In your eye, Mr. Saban.

this sort of thing only helps get warm bodies onto the roster and is not a sustainable practice because it constantly works towards the year in the future. Michigan loses the scholarship for the 2013 class - it basically transforms Clark into a Junior is all. greyshirts are more of a 'can't miss this kid' effort rather than an effort to tack on unfairly.

the SEC pairs greyshirts with booting kids off teams so they greyshirt kids they think will grow into better players than the kids they might think have reached the ceiling early. they fill room within the current class, rather than losing a spot during the recruitment.

hopefully that makes sense. hoke will be forced to recruit one less kid next year, saban would just kick off a current kid.

Interesting development, but I definitely want to welcome Jeremy. If what is true about the Michigan camp, I am excited to see what he will bring to the secondary in the future.

Considering he's had this incredible growth spurt, a greyshirt gives him time to adjust to his body, adjust to school with an extra semester of early enrollment.  The only drawback is the semester of tuition, but obviously he and his family are willing and able to contribute.  And a win-win for the team.  He or Wilson this year; or he and Wilson for the next few years.
