HELLO: Gareon Conley

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Other sites are reporting that 6'2 CB from Massillon, OH - Gareon Conley has indeed committed to Michigan.

One site uses his twitter as the source. Another says he was waiting until today to make it public. And a third said it's official and announced.

Obviously a big pickup. Michigan needs a bigger CB, and if he continues to grow (and can tackle), he may grow into a FS. This puts Dymonte Thomas at SS, Jourdan Lewis remains at CB and maybe we still have a shot for a Kendall Fuller. If we get say a Su'a Cravens, then he'd likely remain at CB.

Right now, either way, it's a big time pickup! Whether it was truly official last night, right now or this afternoon. WELCOME!!! Go Blue!

Note: I'll change the title when I see it more publicized or when a MOD says it's okay.

[ED:BISB - Changed title. Feel free to change back if/when things are confirmed]

[OP: Changed back!]

16 and 17 year olds always say exactly what they mean, mean exactly what they say and never ever change their minds. That is why Logan Tuley Tillman is waiting to announce til he takes all of his officials, Kyle Bosch is waiting til summertime and Chris Fox is going to announce just before his senior season.... Ty Isaac said his timetable will not change. Might as well etch it in stone.

It may be  now or never with Ty. With Deveon Smith and Derrick Green coming in, you'd have to think there is at least a chance that the 1 RB spot remaining( as of now), will not make it past next weekend. In Smith's case, especially.

By evidence of them having Green and Smith in for a visit, while they are telling guys like Anzalone to stay home, it seems clear that they would be willing to accept one of their commitments, rather than wait for Ty to finish his visits.

Do we always have to say "this is a big time pickup"? We only have 18-28 spots a year  every commitment is important, this should be obvious.

Have seen Conley play in person a couple times and I was sort of surprised that we offered.  He was good, but never jumped out.

Do like the big corners though.  Let's hope he turns out to be a find.

I'm anxiously awaiting ACE's Hello post b/c I don't know much about Conley.  Here are a few questions that some gurus might be able to answer.

1) What is the ideal height for a B1G corner?  6'2" seems pretty solid to me.  Also seemed to have really good ball skills, and could read the QBs in the film quite well.  Technique wise, where is he?

2) He seemed to be genuinly interested in UM even before he got the offer, and after we shot right to the top of his list.  Was he a fan or UM growing up?  Are there any UM connections to his school, like an assistant coach or anything?

3) We have some depth at CB right now, does he redshirt?

4) How many CBs do we take in this class?

Thanks.

1. I looked at cornerback height not too long ago, and 5'10" or 5'11" players generally make the most Pro Bowls.

2. Yes, he was a Michigan fan growing up, but I'm not sure if he has other connections.

3. He'll definitely redshirt if he doesn't put some size on between now and then.  My guess, though, is that he will play as a freshman due to a bit of a numbers crunch.

4. I'm guessing we'll take 2 cornerbacks with a chance for a 3rd, perhaps someone who can play FS, too.

Thanks for asking these questions.  I too have been trying to figure out how excited I should be.  He's a 4-star on Scout, for what that's worth, but Rivals hasn't even gotten beyond listing his name on their site.  And I think, more telling, his offer list includes only Toledo, Northwestern, and Michigan.  So, yeah, I would hope Michigan would jump to the top of his list with an offer, because it's a short list.

I suspect he will fill a role nicely as a taller CB, but I'm also interested in hearing a more in depth analysis of this guy's game.

I love how people are labeling Conley as a "find" or a player we should "wait on." I could be way off base on this, but isn't he about as highly regarded (approximately) as Blake Countess was coming out of HS with a full year still  to develop? I don't think any of these individuals who are paying strict attention to the rankings would turn down a 6'2 Blake Countess...

Thank you for cleaning up those scraps left in Ohio.  I also don't know why you are all talking about Cravens...there is zero chance he comes this far east.

Hey troll, thanks for leaving top talent sitting there because of your coach's "system."

What has you worried is you fear the talent evaluation skills of Hoke and Mattison. As well you should. Michigan has no fear of Meyer. Played him once, shredded his defense, handed Tebow his only bowl loss.

Keep up the great work. Leave us the players whose best football is ahead of them, just like you left McCray and Trey Burke in basketball. Conley will end up being better than Burrows. Better athlete, bigger, more upside. When I read stupid comments like yours, I smell fear. With good reason.

I was just saying that the Bucknuts guys think Conley has the best cover skills in Ohio. They did say that Burrows is more physical. What the hell do I know? I just find it interesting that he would garner such high praise from Bucknuts, of all places. Edit: Ahh, not talking to me. Got it.

Based on the little I know I wish Conley did not have an offer yet. I understand about having corners of different sizes, and it sounds like he's pretty good -- like maybe he would have made the 2012 class. But he doesn't sound like top level talent -- either from the recruiting sites or from some of the people here who have seen him. It's so early, and we're really going to be able to focus on just a few slots. Maybe I'm spoiled by the recent success, but I think taking him now costs us a chance really elite talent, which we are attracting. Why not wait to offer him? If he's getting offers from Northwestern and Toledo, do you think he will not consider a Michigan offer in the fall?

Anyone have any insight on this?

I've seen a lot of comments about how we need "big" cornerbacks. If we can get a pool of Charles Woodsons, great. But, if not, shouldn't we generally be more concerned with speed? What if the big guy gets outrun by a fast receiver. What good is he then? A quick 5'8" 175# guy, on the other hand, may get outjumped in the end, but at least he'll get a chance to make a play on the ball.

Congratulations to him if he has committed. Hopefully this is confirmed.

EDIT: I post this, then I go to the home page, and there is the Hello post. Congrats to him.

whats not to love about a 6'2, 4.5 40 running , top notch ball skilling twitchy hip CB?

The only knock on the kid is he is too skinny right now but, he won't even step on campus for another 2 year.

I want to see him play live... because his highlights didn't Scream 4 star corner... All his best plays came off his technique... I'm just curious to see if he can keep his technique up for an entire game if soo this is a TREMENDOUS pick up for the wolverines... I'd rather have a sound corner than a athlete

stud, I love this since he plays his ball 20 minutes from where I live. So I will for sure be going to see him in action quite a bit this year, with Dymonte Thomas, and Ben Geoden also if he commits. I love Hoke he only recruits kids from my area of Ohio lol. Go Blue and welcome to the family.
