Guess that answers the "why not Drake Johnson" thread....
Scholarship or walk-on?
Scholarship. I believe he was offered this morning and committed shortly thereafter.
So you're saying it better be a scholarship?
I'm so confused....
I think the first statement is pretty clear - he is adamant that Drake be on scholarship ("better not be no" = double negative = positive. However, his second statement that it would be a big waste doesn't seem to jive with his first. I had to consult with my first grade English teacher on this one and, in her professional opinion (her opinion, not mine), the poster may have missed a lot of elementary English classes during his formative years. I'm not opining on the issue, I'm just reporting what I heard after consuling a professional.
You sound like a freaking idiot with grammar like that. I highly doubt that anyone worthy of any respect has any respect for you if you regularly speak that way.
Yet with this one and your pompous and misguided signature line, I think you're one strike away from an official declaration that I Don't Like You.
this is outa the blue
Have you seen our special teams? The coaches were fed up...lets try to get past the 35 next year!
Does nothing to change the out of blueness this particular commit gave me.
this is outa the blue
Isn't this a huge surprise? I had the impression from all the discussion the other day that Michigan had not even made an offer to Johnson and was unlikely to.
Are we giving up on Dunn?
He is 133 yards away from the state rushing record. He has had a great senior year for Pioneer.
I'm guessing the ship has now sailed on Bri'onte Dunn.
I don't think Michigan is done recruiting Dunn.
With Shaw graduating and Cox not likely getting a fifth year, there is room for another running back. Especially since Michigan's coaches want to add a more physical element to the run game. Dunn and Johnson would be a great combination.
I doubt we take another RB. If we take Payton, one of the OL, one of the DB's, there is only room for one more and Dunn said he isn't enrolling early so I don't know if we could take him. I feel like if we go after Dunn still, Drake won't come here as a RB, more of a special teams or slot player.
Is it fair to say that not one person on this board have an idea of who the coaching staff is recruiting or who they are going to take?
Sam also said he thinks they will still recruit Bri'onte.
I think if Bri'ote wants to enroll in Jan. then I think there is a high probability of him coming. If it drags out to signing day, I am less optimistic.
they offered him this morning and he took about 5 minutes before accepting
For a kid that seemingly wanted an offer pretty badly.
If the Dunn ship has sailed, Michigan better get an elite RB next year. Ty Isaac???? V
That he doesn't think it precludes them from recruiting Bri'onte Dunn, FWIW.
If they're not sure they're going to get another OL guy, they could take 2 backs. And there's nothing to say Drake's whole career will be at RB.
Remember back on signing day when Hoke said he would like to take two backs in each class for that reason exactly. That backs are usually athletic enough to move elsewhere.
If I remember correctly... Our last Heisman winner was recruited nationally as a running back.
But our last two (and I guess, by historical standards, all of them) played RB in High School.
we already have two backs in this class, Sione Houma.......
I think this is the right line of thought, given what Hoke has said in the past. Give the kid a shot at RB. But if he gets passed up, there are lots of other positions where that speed could make him a real asset.
Why couldn't we take another OL guy? 2 WR's, 1 OL and the last spot is a toss-up. At this point, I'd give us just as much of a shot at Dunn as Wright or Shaq Thompson.
It's just not a live or die need, and it seems like a number of our top prospects might be leaning a little in different directions right now. If one of our top guys says he wants to come, we'll take him. It's just that we're not taking a second choice guy just to fill an OL slot at this point. But talent's talent.
I figure we're pretty solid to get 2 of our many options at WR, maybe Wright, and Dunn, OL guy, or whoever else to fill out the class. I'm just guessing there's more of a chance if Dunn wants to come there will be an open spot because none of the remaining big time O-line guys want to come across the Country to Michigan.
I think adding another OL is more important than another player in the secondary given our atrocious depth in the line right now. All I was saying is that if they do take 2 RB's (actually 3 with Houma), I think it's more likely Dunn would take up the Wright/Thompson spot and not an OL spot as I still think we have a good shot at Garnett (although he's far away) or possibly Diamond again (who's close by) and we're still in the mix for some other big-time prospects. At the end of the day, I just want moar stars!
AJ Williams dominated on the offensive line this year so some have speculated he could easily move there if he added weight. Of course he was offered as a TE but at his size already (6'6, 275), there's no way he keeps off the weight once he starts hitting the gym at Michigan.
That's another position that's very thin
Pharaoh Brown could move to TE
I'm in no way saying another O-lineman is a waste. We could use them. It's just with then numbers we have, it wouldn't be a tragedy. Just like if we don't get Wright (or almost anyone other than 0 receivers) it wouldn't be the end of the world. But we'd still take them, because they're good. I just get a sense from some of the recruiting posts that Diamond doesn't seem as likely, and guys like Garnett might be looking to stay west coast a little more, and someone like Wright might have stronger interest. It might be a race for those who want to say "yes". I just see receiver as the only position we might stretch and take a guy we don't really want for just having bodies, which we probably won't do on the line, or secondary.
Agreed, especially what you said about recruiting WR's. I guess I just thought that when you said "If they're not sure they're going to get another OL guy, they could take 2 backs" in your original post, I took it to mean that they'd only take Dunn in place of an OL recruit.
After watching his last high school game, Sam Webb said AJ Williams has had an outstanding senior year and has developed into a great blocker. Further, he said he was close to 290 right now and his skills were so developed he could potentially see the field at Michigan at tackle "quickly". Apparently, he pancaked lots of guys during the game. If this is true, maybe the coaches now feel it's not the end of the world if we don't get another lineman?
I still think we go after Dunn hard. But, it's good to see a really good local player coming here. Johnson may surprise a heck of a lot of people.
He's a nice sized back and to be able to break the state rushing record running behind a Pioneer O-Line is might impressive. I have a good feeling about this kid.
Congrats to the kid. Good luck
Raises a question: who do you think is the best Pioneer grad to play for Michigan? (Category 1: Ever; Category 2: A.B. (After Bo).
I'll guess Jim Harbaugh. I don't really have a handle on other Pioneer grads. I rememer Keith Bostic in the early 80s.
If I remember correctly I don't think harbaugh actually graduated from pioneer. I thought he moved during his time at pioneer. I could be wrong though.
Correct, believe Jack went to Standford for Jim's last two years in HS.
I looked at Wikipedia before I posted. I saw that Harbaugh had attended both Palo Alto High and Pioneer. I had assumed that they had moved to Ann Arbor from Palo Alto, but you could be right that the move was in the other direction and that he finished in California.
There is a picture of Jim Harbaugh as a young kid on the field at Michigan horsing around with QB Rick Leach. Jim looked like he was in middle school. I guess that probably means you are right and that he graduated from Palo Alto.
Harbaugh attended Tappan Middle School - my uncle was his teacher there.
Tim Anderson and Andy Moeller were PiHi grads who played early to mid 80s. They were good. Of course, I am biased. At the same time, we also had 2 walk-on twin brothers from PiHi who had quite a reputation on the team as tough SOBs. Bo loved them.
Let's also not foret that he is a former teammate of Fred Jackson's son Jeremy, and being right accross the street you have to assume Fred and Co. have had ample opportunity to evaluate him.
Jeremy Jackson went to Huron.
And I'm amazed this didn't start a "what would Fred Jackson say about his new back" thread.
That's what I was thinking after I posted that. I think we have several walk-ons from Pioneer so the overall point was still valid.
Can one of our recruiting gurus on this site post some info on this kid? I don't know much about him, other than that he obviously wants to be here, given the acceptance 5 minutes after the offer.
Ace covered his last game in his weekly future blue thing. It's still on the front page if you scroll down
I was thinking the same thing. Ace didnt seem to think he was D1 worthy. Its hard to pass up a kid with elite speed and who is about to break the states rushing record. With his size, he could potentially play wr as well.
Yesterday's future blue original where ace unknowingly scouts our next commit
but I wonder if part of the reason they offered him was to make sure he doesn't come back to Michigan Stadium wearing an Iowa or Wisconsin or, God forbid, Michigan State helmet. Whatever, it's great to see a home-town guy do well enough to get a UM scholarship. He has the chance to continue a fairly long tradition of UM RBs also playing significant roles on the track team.
furthermore solidifies that Brady Hoke gets it. We now know he reads MGoBlog.
In that case: BUBBLE SCREEN!
Welcome Drake, though we didn't even get a chance to BUCKLE UP! today
wresler will be ecstatic!
You've got to admit, the man has vision...
Hoke and co. read the board.
I'm betting they didn't know any of that till it was posted.
I would love to see this kid dominate and after what wresler went through become a prophet.
Making a claim and saying "wrestler IT!!" just doesn't have the same ring....
Rivals only has an EMU offer listed
has our recruiting train slowed down? s/
Congrats to the kid, and I hope he proves the experts wrong!
Love the Drake!
No, this is The Drake!
aawolverine's benefit. (I think that's his handle now...he's changed a few times, and always gets the reference....glad someone else did too).
Is that Red Dragon Ancient (8hp/hd) or merely Very Old (7 hp/hd)? Should I use Otiluke's Freezing Sphere on it or go with the Cone of Cold?
/uber D&D geek
If you don't know the difference between a drake and a dragon. ;-)
There is a difference between a Drake and a Dragon in D&D?
I guess I should have included 1st Edition (aka AD&D) in my geek tag. I haven't played pen-and-paper D&D in about 20 years, just on the computer (Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights).
EDIT: I just noticed that "Drake" has no wings. D'oh!
I believe Charles Drake came in as a RB, but then went to DB. This followed...
This is also a Drake...
I love when we keep in state talent home.
Here are the highlights from his sophomore/Jr years, embedding is disabled upon request.
welcome to the team. You're going to love Ann Arb-... oh, yeah
Looking forward to seeing records broken accross the street in the Big House
Congrats, Drake Johnson! I'm happy for this kid; it has to be tough to do all that you can, put up numbers like that, and still not feel like you have a chance to play for your dream school.
Good for him. Everybody loves the Drake!
It'll be interesting to see what happens this weekend; AA Pioneer plays Godin and CC. If Johnson goes off on this stout defense, I'll be sold.
we should give the MGoBlog team a break in terms of creating a front page post. Welcome to Michigan Drake.
Ace said on Twitter that a hello post would be up shortly.
The timing of this is somewhat peculiar. Why not wait and see how other leads pan-out first? It has been pretty obvious that Drake would jump at this offer. I feel like the spot could be utilized better elsewhere. His previous offer list begs the question...what was keeping him from getting BCS quality offers?
Anywho, congrats to the kid. He's put in the work and has been recognized. Hopefully he makes my doubts look unfounded. I'll pull for any guy who Hoke deems Michigan material.
When you figure out you want someone to commit to you, you want that commitment to begin as soon as possible.
It's an obvious and good question that Sam Webb has addressed a few times, and he's said that Johnson has attended very few off-season camps, and for that reason alone was sort of under the radar. He's also had a break-out year, and so it might also be the case that his performance prior to his senior season wasn't that notable.
Just a note on the break out year thing: if he wasnt at Pioneer, I'm sure he would have more offers. Freshman year he played on the freshman team (and scored pretty much at will), sophomore year he was on JV, and junior year he was behind senior captian Riley Quigley at RB. At a smaller school, he could have been a 3 or 4 year starter.
But Sam didn't seem to be "cocking his eyebrow" at the offer, and sounded excited to get the kid.
Sam has been on this for a couple weeks. He thought that he would be the next guy behind Brionte in terms of an offer, and that his recruitment was picking up steam. Schools like Iowa and Wisconsin were starting to get involved. I think they identified Drake as a guy they would like to have, and didn't want him to get away.
I think I would feel a little better if Iowa and Wisconsin pulled the trigger on an offer because they seem to have a keen eye for under the radar backs, but if Hoke, anc Co. are happy, then I am happy.
Are you by chance the same Don that calls into WTKA all the time?
Yes. Otherwise they have a remarkably similiar, middle of the road, not getting overhyped, fair style about them. And seeming knowledge of the same things.
Which always makes it kind of a kick when he calls when Brian's on WTKA.
Based on what I saw, Dunn was the more impressive RB. Johnson didn't seem to exhibit lights-out speed, and Dunn was more dangerous in broken-field situations. Regardless, I'm going to trust Hoke, Jackson & Co. on this one.
It's entirely possible that they've already seen how their offers to Dunn and other big fish have panned out. Just because you don't know, doesn't mean they don't.
I can't wait to see him put up 3000 yard rushing seasons at Michigan. This is going to be awesome.
Can he play wide receiver? Seems very un MANBALL. Glad to have you Drake. Welcome and Go Blue!
He's a speedster who is currently listed at 6'1 205. After some weight gain he goes from maybe manball, to MANNBALL Z!
from his press conference and goes after two backs a class we could be looking at some nice classes. Johnson is a burner and for a basher I'd love to see Dunn (or Brown), and then next year I'm already crossing my fingers for a Issac and Shallman tandem coming in!
In case anyone is interested: AA Pioneer (Johnson) plays at CC (Godin and Shallman) on Saturday at 1:00. Cass Tech (RJS and Richardson) visits DeLasalle (Morris) Friday at 7:00.
Better than Dunn or Marshall I suppose...
What's your deal?
My frustration is with the timing. We could have offered this kid after the Army and UA games and he still would have come (his best offer is Army). Why not figure out exactly where we stand before offering? It makes no sense. The kid is fine, but the timing is thoughtless.
"Why not figure out exactly where we stand before offering? "
Wait, Hoke needs to figure it out before offering, or His Dudeness needs to figure it out before offering? Should Hoke call you to get your stance on our current offerees, or should he just go on his knowledge of the situation? We should probably get him your number.
Give hoke my number while you are at it.
Since Dunn said he is soft to OSU maybe we should have waited until after the AA bowl where all the kids like to commit. Also, Keith Marshall has interest in us and is still open. Just think we should have waited until after the Commit Bowls. It makes sense.
And, as per usual, he was negged for it lol.
Apparently the coaches thought the Drake fish was worth frying.
I dunno, man, I mean he looks like a good high school running back. But I said it before, he doesn't have good hips. He doesn't cut well. He appears to have good speed, but you got to be able to do more at the college level. In my mind his ceiling is Fitz, which isn't terrible, but that's his ceiling IMO. Good straight line speed may make it so he can transfer to WR or be a kick returner, but I don't see him making an impact on defense, where you need to have good hips to turn and run with people. I still see someone who could be a good MAC back.
I probably wouldn't mind if this was what it came down to closer to signing day. I guess my point is I just don't like it at this point in the recruiting calender with so few spots left. I hope I'm wrong and he's a great back for Michigan. I've been wrong before. Prove me wrong Johnson.
Agreed. He looks like a good high school runner...and that's about it. Hopefully he proves us both wrong.
Stiff hips are no big deal, get the kid to take some salsa dancing lessons and he'll be fine.
Yea, I just watched his film and he doesn't seem to have the best vision either. He wasn't breaking tackles like I was expecting him to. If they are looking for a guy that can gun it through a hole and consistently get 2 yards after contact, I could see him doing that, but I don't really see him being a homerun threat. I would think that they would have made him a preferred walk-on or maybe a grey shirt. I'm kind of surprised that they offered him.
wresler 120 deserves an apology from a lot of people. He was right and we were all giving him hell.
Maybe credit, but not an apology. Not to sound like an asshole (which means I probably am sounding like an asshole), but he started about 3 threads talking about how the Michigan staff had to offer him. Just because they did offer him eventually doesn't mean it wasn't ridiculous that he kept starting threads about it, sounding like his mom or dad telling everyone how good their child is. If it would have been a single post that said: "hey, I go to this guys school and this is what he's done. I think he's good enough to deserve a scolly from Michigan, what do you guys think?" instead of pleading that the coaches read his threads and offer him, it would have been fine. But it was a bit too much.
And by the way, I wasn't one of those to chastise him earlier, I just don't think we needed all the threads. I have my feelings about Drake Johnson (above), but if the coaches like him enough to offer than I hope Johnson and the coaching staff prove me wrong.
Still, welcome aboard Drake
I think he should start an "I was right" diary to make sure we all know.
he has good size and speed. may be a bit of a reach, but there are sleeper 2 stand and 3 star kids every year. could move to WR pretty easily if he has hands and doesn't pan out at RB
2-star-under-recruited-goldmine-recruits-that -one-big school-them-a-chance chart.
Welcome Drake, we are pullin for you!
Congrats to Drake! I have been wondering for awhile when we were going to offer this kid. He deserves it. Rankings do not mean everything or always tell the whole story. My younger sister and younger brother grew up with this kid (and I was a senior on the Pioneer football team when he was a freshman), so I know a bit about the situation. I know that he has not been to many camps (as stated above) and has focused heavily on track as well as football. Had he been camping regularly I have no doubt this kid would be a solid 4* recruit. He has also played OLB and DB for Pioneer. The physical tools are all there, now he just needs to put the work in.
It should be noted as well, that Drake has done what he has this year with teams knowing that he is literally 100% of Pioneer's offense. Pioneer throws the ball 3-4 times a game max, Drake does the rest. For a kid to line up, with the opposing team game planning against him all week, and completely keying on him alone, and do what he has done is really freaking impressive. Congrats Drake!
The rumors are true! Coach Hoke DOES read the MGoBoard!
he's good enough for me.
Track man with decent size almost sounds like a Ty Wheatley-type, but I've never seen Johnson play.
but when I read about his speed at that size, I thought when college puts on a couple of pounds they'd have a very similar frame. College-wise. Not NFL where the Giants made him become a "big back" and took away his speed by beefing him up.
And I was just thinking yesterday about the guys who used to post a lot on the site and not as much anymore (after the game review thread) and thought of you.... lol
...so I have more time to post during the summer months. Still read the board religiously though.
I was thinking about MGoShoe the other day. That dude used to post all the time but I can't recall seeing anything from him in a while. Has he been posting and I just missed it?
Local kid who accepted the offer right away is a great story. Welcome aboard Drake.
The kid has some speed.
I would love to see what he could put down in just the straight up 55, 100, and 200. Even 400 hurdles, do they run that in Michigan or is it 300?
Of 247 just posted what he's hearing about dunn as it relates to Drake Johnson. Any with access care to post the jist of that?
Thats how they make money, so no.
Inevitable that someone eventually spills the inside beans
Great name, great speed, good size, local kid that the entire staff must have scouted fairly well. Can they teach him to wiggle a bit?
he looks like a tough work horse back. that can take a pounding. he'll add about 20-30lbs and hopefully be that big back Hoke and Borges is looking for.
Now that I've thought about it, does track speed plus 6'1" plus not the best between the tackles equal wideout?
That's sort of what I'm feeling...nothing more than that...
he seems like a kickoff return guy and maybe a WR. Ace's review does not inspire confidence. Timing does seem strange, maybe they no we're done with Dunn and other RB targets. Hopefully Drake will surprise.
According to Ace's write-up on him he may not be an RB in college, but the coaching staff will find a way to utilize his speed. I can't even imagine how good this kid feels right now, happy for him.
Also, all these points are valid regarding Williams being the 6th OL, johnson taking the DB spot, but anyone think the staff only wants one WR?
Maybe this young man ends up at receiver. By all accounts, he has been very impressive as a wideout in 7-on-7s and throughout his senior season.
in my opinion, this kid looks better than dunn, maybe its the competition.
not very impressed to be honest.
Given Michigan's late offer, Johnson's recruiting site rankings, and the small number of other (quality) schools interested, I would be surprised if he had any entitlement issues or diva tendencies.
Let the kid redshirt and take the year to determine if he's an RB, WR, slot, return man, gunner, or even a defensive player at the college level. He very well may end up just being a glue guy utility player, and I expect that he'd be fine with that for five years.
Glad we got him.
In a little late, but......
Commence everyone going all:
"Who is this guy!?"
"We better not have offered him a scholarship!"
"What a waste of a scholarship!"
"Why did we offer him when there are so many other big names out on the board!"
"We'd better not miss out on player X because we wasted a scholarship on this guy!"
Followed by some douchebag reporter asking the kid a question about star rankings/what does he think about X things said on Michigan MBs about him, and the recruit saying something along the lines of, "I'm going to just have to prove them wrong/I just hope they like me and don't think they wasted scholarship on me *sad panda face*.
Also, we aren't getting Brionte Dunn. Get over it.
I dont know why everyone is so down on this kid, according to Fred Jackson he has the speed and vision of Barry Sanders combined with the size and strength of Jerome Bettis.
Me being a Pioneer Alum, I'm happy but The Drake will be moved to WR and return kicks/punts, he's got good straight line speed. The film didn't impress me much compared to Dunn who's running over people and getting alot of yards after contact. I try not to get too hyped up on HS stats because there's a millions of HS legends. Go Pioneers!!!
Welcome Drake! And Go Blue!
this highlight tape wasnt impressive?
