And his Jr year highlights are available here.
spoiler alert: i linked this
without the other
Now these are the real deal muppetts.
I don't think I've ever seen a new post with less content in the headline..
Good pick up.
I dub thee BRUISER SMITH!
I haven't seen an impressive a highlight tape in a while (McGuffie?!).
That I like the fact that he gets caught from behind because it reminds me of Mike Hart?
Welcome Deveon. Sounds like best wishes to Ty Issac.
I'd have to think Ty still has a spot if he wants it. He dispelled the rumors that he wanted to be the only back in the class in an interview last week.
Im too lazy to look it up but I did see that article too. Ty basically said that he encourages competition and another back committing wont discourage him from a team. I like how Smith just plows people over but I like Isaac's top end speed more, so I would have preferred Ty Isaac especially with Shallman being the run you over back.
"The fact remains the coaching staff would still take the commitment of Isaac if he were to choose the Wolverines, and Smith’s commitment most likely won’t scare Isaac away either."
Ace discussed it in his recruiting roundup yesterday:
“Competition makes you better. If you don’t have someone behind you pushing you to be better, you might get sloppy. If I’m the only back in the class, yeah that’s cool with me… but if I’m not, it’s not a turnoff and I’m not scared of it. I would expect people to be disappointed in me if I was talking like that. As a coach if I heard somebody say that, I’d understand. But at the same time, to me that sounds like you’re scared of competition.”
news. Deveon is a great fit for the future. It's been awhile, since we've had a highly rated back commit to Michigan.
Hopefully we don't lose Green. I may be the only one, but I think he's the best back of the three.
Some might agree with you. You really can't go wrong with any of the three.
Some might agree, others downvote for some strange reason. My reaction:
I really wasn't impressed with Green's highlights. For someone as big and fast as he reportedly is, he didn't run with nearly the power and balance that Smith does. Green seemed to run right into people and almost leave his feet a bit - often falling forward, but rarely keeping his feet. And I did not see what looked like funcitonal 4.4 speed at all.
He sorta looked like Carlos Brown Plus, to me.
Green has good speed (clearly not his listed 40 time though) but he likes to go right for contact, which I think is a good thing but you don't really get to see him in the open field, which is why I think people think less of him than Smith and Isaac. Most importantly, Green's got very good acceleration and quick, clean cuts. He keeps the legs churning and falls forward, as you say. That's what I look for in a RB.
Smith seems stiff to me and I don't see him making any lateral cuts in his clips. Also, it looks like he gets caught up to, rather than going straight for contact like Green. Isaac is anyone's guess - every play in his reel is him hitting a hole off tackle and being completely alone thereafter. Then again, nobody's paying me for my opinion on HS running backs.
I mostly agree with what you're saying, but I think I'm interpreting it differently (and, like you, no one would give me money for my YouTube watching skills.) The only thing I differ on is that I don't think Green keeps his feet moving at contact at all - he almost launches directly into players, stopping his feet and literally falling forward. It's like he's not even trying to break a tackle and keep his feet. Maybe he can be coached out of that, but Smith seems to have better instincts in his tape. If your RB never seems to find a way to the open field, that's a problem. I do agree that Smith does not have great lateral quickness, however.
A bit tangential, but one of the things that makes me happy about Smith (and this would be true of Green, too) is that, unlike Isaac, we're taking him away from OSU and the rest of the B1G. He seems like the sort of guy who would end up killing us if he played in conference. Isaac, hopefully, will end up far, far away if he doesn't come to AA.
Personally, I'd rank them as 1) Isaac, 2) Smith, 3) Green - but all are definitely talented dudes. I may have sounded a bit harsh on Green. And maybe, just maybe, that's slanted a bit because I feel like he's going to end up in Columbus.
AWESOME! Hope Isaac isnt scared off though!!
Hell ya! Wake up from a drunk nap to find this, maybe I should take another one and see what happens
Hellll to tha mutha fuggggan yaaaaaayaaaaaa
I just woke up from a st patty's passout...I like your post.
Deveon Smith looks like a man. Baller.
*insert Ty Isaac question here*
YES! Next round of green beer on me!
He looks to be a runaway beer truck; With a behemoth line and that dude running between them, even Wisconsin is going to be green with envy. I can see what the coaches see in this guys running style; he may not be the fastest guy on the field but those that are faster don't bring him down to easily...
....that make St. Patrick's Day truly a notable occasion in this day and age.
Welcome to Michigan, Deveon Smith!
I do not think we will add another RB now that we have Smith. I am really pumped! It would have been tough to see him across the field for another team. Now he can do the punishing for us.
On Isaac, I feel like we'll be making a big, big mistake.
I disagree. I hope we get him but I also could see him being a bust. That is based off no information besides his HL film. I was/am/will be more excited for Deveon in this class than Ty. That being said. I really hope he does go Blue.
said he felt Isaac could be a top-10 WR if that was his position, I am sure we could find room for him. On the other hand, I really thought the coaches were slowing Smith a bit to give Ty a chance to commit after getting his glimpse of USC so what do I know...
Not sure why I got downvoted for that but whatever. I agree with you. Ty is a beast and will probably be awesome. I am just more excited about Deveon, I'm excited to see him running safeties over and making them fart out the mouth and talk out their butt ... 100 MGoPoints to whoever gets the movie reference.
Feel free to send my points to a charity of your choice.
that the coaches will still take Isaac if he wants to come. IF he wants to come. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!
I really believe that's the case. We don't have good depth at RB for a every down rusher. Hayes and Norfleet seem more like 3rd down backs, ala Vincent Smith. Rawls and Drake Johnson are unproven.
does that mean smith and isaac are proven?
No, it means you take a couple more backs to improve your chances of having a stud or two. Secondly, both Isaac and Smith are higher rated than Rawls and Johnson.
I think you'll feel better if you re-watch Rawls' tape. That kid is going to be a stud. But yes, depth.
Well if we take Isaac instead, we could be making a mistake by not taking deveon. Both are really good backs for our system
Oh wait, it's St Patty's day.
I enjoy the screen cap on the video, where he is pounding forward and there is just a defender crumpled on the ground in pain. Welcome Deveon!
A fellow Howland Tiger! Welcome aboard! Celebrate by hitting up the Warren Hot Dob Shoppe!
The hotdog shoppe what do you kno about that......im form WARREN OHIO......GO BLUE
had a hunch he would jump on it with Isaac taking his time. I didn't think we could go wrong with either guy so sweet.
Ty still has his chance.
Take your time, Ty, make a good decision...and come to Michigan.
LET'S GET BOMBED!!!!
Where I hear the Western fans are being very rude. But he can take it.
The hockey game is at JLA in Detroit so probably not.
behind the silly post. Because it is at JLA, besides being impractical, would it be a recruiting violation to take a recruit up the road for the host school's game?
And a very drunken, yet still very sincere, WELCOME ABOARD DEVEON!
there are 300 players on that right now. They haven't done their actual top 150 yet.
Smith will be very good. But I have a feeling Isaac will be elite with his size and speed combo. I really hope Isaac will still take a serious look at us. If not, then I feel a little sad. We are recruiting phenomenally on the lines but I feel the skill positions are not quite up to that standard (exception is Morris). I hope I'm proven wrong. And, yes, feel free to moderate me to Bolivia.
Level, and Isaac is just on another one.
There have been questions about his game translating to other levels. I believe i recall Magnus saying Smith is more of a sure fire prospect, while Isaac has a higher ceiling but isn't such a certainty to live up to expectations.
But if you want to win NCs, don't you need to take that risk and hope Isaac reaches that higher ceiling then? Smith seems more like a capitulation to "very good", but not to the level of "the best".
16 year old high school students, both elite althletes and you're projecting one guy (who plays lesser competition) as better than another guy (who is pretty much his equal in the ratings). Both of them are excellent; I'll be happy with either and if Isaac chooses to go Blue then great...
Your logic related to "if you want to win NC's" you need to risk on high ceiling athletes is ridiculous. Give me a team of "low ceiling" four star players and some real depth and the National Championships will come (with some luck, lack of injuries etc.).
Calling a great high school athlete who chooses to commit to Michigan "a capituation to very good but not to the level of the best" is asinine.
Please return your three star mafia card ASAP.
You realize that every team that has won an NC in the rivals/scout era has had a #1 recruiting class except for Auburn? If you seriously want to compete on the highest level you need to take the risk on the highest level prospects. There will eventually be a team that disproves the trend, but I would rather play the odds.
We're really talking about a more philosophical debate about would you rather consistently win conference championsips, or pop up every now and again and win NCs. Would you be satisfied with another Bo era of 13 B1G chsmpionships in 21 seasons but a terrible bowl record and no NCs, or would you rather risk it all for an NC? I really don't gave an answer to that, and it's an honest question every fan base should ask.
Not to mention the fact that Auburn had Cam Newton, who was a solid 5 star on rivals when he committed to Florida. He would have given Auburn a really nice bump in the final recruiting rankings if he went there to begin with.
Why is this redundant?
Double post, don't know why that happened.
Maybe I should have invited simplistic analysis to follow my comment.
The point is that nobody knows, really, if there is any actual variance in talent between these two kids. You have a small sample of recruiting analysts saying one guy is 5 star and another is 4 star. The five star plays inferior competition and *might* have a higher ceiling. He's 16, however, so in both cases there is no guarantee. I'll take 4 star depth all day and take my chances on the coaching staff figuring out which guy has the higher ceiling (as opposed to Alan Trieu and the rest of your heroes).
Not every player on a NC team is a 5* worldbeater. Our loaded defense from 1997 had one all-world guy, some solid NFL talent, and guys like Glen Steele whose NFL experience was only slightly more significant than yours or mine. Alabama and LSU played in the title game with decidedly average quarterbacks, and while perhaps their fans had the same gripe you do they seemed to be just fine for most of the year.
Ty Isaac is a good TB but his running style is different than Smith's. Isaac runs more upright and leaves the football vulnerable to direct hits. He is fast but would have to adjust his running style for college. Smith runs lower and with more power. Would like to have both but am very happy with Smith. We need toughness and power and he will make defensive backs think twice about the head on collisions. Great pick up by the staff.
Couldn't agree more. I think Smith has a huge future ahead of him, particularly in a pro-style offense. I would love to have both Smith and Isaac, but now that we have Smith, I won't be disappointed if we don't get Isaac too... keeping in mind that before this year's unprecedented recruiting phenomenon, I think most of us would have be ecstatic to have Smith.
look at that picture!
The way you describe Ty Isaac, sounds like a critique of Tyrone Wheatley. I'd take 2 years of that without hesitation.
I know 'we' love Isaac and nobody really knows if we will take another rb,, but give me a guy that sees AA Nd commits on the spot (with this guys talent) any f'ing day of the week
I really feel like Isaac was alwaysgoing to end up at USC. Not sure why just a gut thing though.
I'll take Smith though....I honestly never thought there was that much difference between the 2.
with cox leaving do we have room for Ty now?
Cox has no bearing on the amount of scholarships we can take in the 2013 class.
Cox would have been gone when Smith/Isaac come in anyways
He should have pulled trigger last week.
Let's disparage a potential recruit...really smart.
Ty knew this was a possibility and there is still a spot for him.
but i still want isaac watch his highlights UNBELIEVABLE!
Honestly, I have never watched highlights of prospects until they commit to Michigan, I find it rather pointless, let's be happy with who we have, Smith wants to wear the winged helmet and I like him just for that, the coaches know what they're doing, we'll see what happens with Isaac in the future, but a bird in hand is worth way more than two in the bush, I'm not really looking forward for rollercoaster recruitment in which we end up with our hands empty.
If we don't get Isaac, it will only be because he didn't want to come. There is no way the coaches would turn him down.
100% agree. The eventual position of Shallman is not in competition with what both Deveon and Isaac bring to the table.... think Aaron Shea..... or Shonte Orr.
lets also remember that these guys have their senior year left to play. i know we are bringing shallman in as an offensive player but if he just blows up on the defensive side of the ball next season the coaches would def give him consideration as a defensive commit. nothing is set in stone this early in the process
His film looks great, as does Isaac's. Michigan was in a no-lose situation here.
Remember: this is another win over OSU.
He reminds me of a much bigger and faster Mike Hart!!!
He reminds me of a much bigger and faster Mike Hart!!!
I think he'll be perfect. We need a guy that can really pound the ball into the endzone.
Don't judge players off of hype alone. Smith can play. He is a Michigan kid with an attitude and I love it! Beat Ohio. Isaac come on down! We need a stable of backs! I
Straight like that!
Shitty NCAA tourny, shitty CCHA championshit, great recruit. Thank you for your commitment Mr. Smith. Welcome.
I think the plan should be to back off on the TE recruiting and leave that spot open for Isaac. They could always move Shallman to the H-back spot.
Great pick-up! Looking forward to seeing him trucking over defenders in the future. Needed this after a rough weekend.
He's like Jim Brown, except when he's like Barry Sanders.
I'm not prone to hyperbole, but next to Deveon, Jim Brown and Barry Sanders are crap.
I just talked to Fred and his exact quote was, "He's like the long lost love child of Doak Walker and Jim Thorpe."
Jackson is that you?
I'm spoiled. I was EXPECTING this post all day and was dissappointed when I didn't see it earlier.
Smith, Shallman and Isaac = Big Nightmare
Where is the next position the coaches will address? There is a methodical process the coaches are putting together, any guidance would be appreciated.
Seems like we've got every spot on the offense filled except for another WR or two. Still need some D lineman and linebackers.
Im so glad we finally got a great back. Smash mouth football is finally gonna be back and I love it.
Two more years of Fitzgerald Toussaint and probable 1,000 yard seasons isn't good enough for you?
This guy is a beast that just won't go down ! What's not to like ?
He has OSU offer too. Hur hur
OSU offer chooses Michigan. Another win for the good guys.
Great news. Deveon is going to look great in the Big House, running over DBs.
Great news for a some what disappointing weekend. Not very familiar with Smith so is he the every down back type?
Yeah he's an everydown
Power back Alright
Welcome Deveon!!! I think if Isaac still wants to come to AA, he'll be welcomed. I think the staff probably leaves a couple of spots open just in case. It would be great to fill all the spots, but realistically I think the staff probably figures 20 spots for sure will be filled (probably by Easter at this rate). That leaves some room for surprise commits like Norfleet with this last class.
It pains me to say, but it looks like THE PARTY ROOM was right!
UGH, blind squirrel:acorn!
well this probably means isaac is out, but this is exactly the kind of rb borges is looking for. glad to have him.
Imagine if we can get the number 7 RB and the number 1 RB to commit to Michigan.
I haven't watched one min of film on Deveon but did see his pictures on 247. Just going by his picture and his body type he looks like a Edwin Baker clone. Is his game similar?
Yes. Fast, breaks tackles.
Minus the "fast" part.
We need some five star guys as well. No one here is going to be content without winning multiple national championships in the next decade.
not all persons smart to get things ya know it?
Heck, I could run behind it and finish 6th for the Heisman.
We're good, people, and DeVeon is a great commit - GO BLUE!!
That guy's a fuckin beast. Can anybody tackle him? He just mauls dudes and gets touchdowns.
Why all the Isaac talk? We just got an amazing recruit who could easily end-up being the best RB in this class, and looks to be--at worst--a 5 ypc guy that always gets tough yardage. He just doesn't go down.
Montee Ball was the #33 RB and not ranked nationally by Rivals.
Getting 5* recruits does NOT equal NC's.
Look at the Doak Walker Winners (Rivals rankings):
Only two of the last six winners have been 5* players, and three of the six were unranked nationally.
The rankings don't mean nothing, but they sure don't mean everything, and DeVeon Smith looks like he could be a bigger, faster Mike Hart (as some have noted). I can't wait to have him as part of the family. Welcome DeVeon!
I like your style, however, I could always pcik players that worked out after the fact. It's well documented that more stars a recruit has, the lower the risk he is to bust and higher the chance he goes to the NFL
I don't know why I got downvoted for saying that that no one would be satisfied without winning multiple national championships ala USC, Florida, now Alabama. I never said anything about Deveon Smith in my post, but you're entitled to your own opinion if you like Michigan finishing 8th.
I don't get why you care about down voting, but since you do care, I upvoted you. In return, I would remind you, although w/ 1k points, you should already know:
I'm guessing it had something to do with the fact that you said we NEED to get 5* players. Sorry, but I am more than happy with getting a class full of solid 4* players in a variety of positions that fit our system perfectly. Look at what Hoke/Mattison/Borges did with players that they were unfamiliar with and didn't necessarily have the skillsets that they are used to having. These guys know what they're doing and this class has been absolutely outstanding so far, even the lower ranked guys fill holes and give us depth and versatility. Look at a player like Khalid Hill for example, he might not be the highest rated guy on the board but he is going to be playing multiple positions for us (TE, FB, Hback) and while you won't hear his name mentioned at any end of the year awards banquets (most likely) that is exactly the kind of players you need on your team to win NC's and succeed in the B1G.
TL;DR: I'll take our coaches analysis on what we need to win more than some faceless person on the interwebs.
Great teams are able to have this work. Wisconsin, Oregon, LSU, Alabama, USC. Throughout history all the good running games have all had more than one. Having two top 7 backs with a power back(Shallman-Peyton hillis type hopefully) and Norfleet (SLOT-just think Tavon Austin from West Virgina when they scored 70). Would love to have Gayle Sayers (Isaac) and Demarco Murray (Smith) in the backfield for the Maize n Blue. By the way Demarco Murray went pro and has a nice 4 yr/2.97mil deal with a 600K signing bonus. Man Smith runs just like him.
Jim Brown and Ernie Davis at Syracuse...or a lesser tandem but still great, Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams at Auburn in 2005.
but wtf is upvoting and downvoting and how do you do that?
I don't know how the screen varies when you have less than 100 points. But yes, at 100 points, you are able to press the moderate button. There is a small window of choices next to the moderate button:
Six of these choices result in a positive vote. Five result in a negative vote. Positives range from 1 - 5, negatives, from 0 to -1. If negative, you can use the "hide negative posters script" which collapses their comment, so you only see the header. Personally, I usually don't use this script, because sometimes it is worth reading a post with a negative moderation.
Until a little more than a year ago, voting on posts directly affected your user point total. Some mgousers really pine for this feature to return. (It allowed users to pop other users up or down, sometimes quite significantly.) This is why some users have huge positive point totals. Generally, witty or humorous posts, inside info, and good analysis posters would quickly accumulate points. The downside is that it also allowed for the worst in group think to happen. Sometimes, posters who received negative "votes" would have a meltdown and start a flamewar. They eventually received the "banhammer," and their mgouser privileges were revoked. Since this feature was removed, I have seen fewer epic meltdowns.
Now, you accumulate points only for each post you put up. The exception is putting up something that is so tremendous that it is bumped to the front page. The moderators, of course, reserve the right to add (or delete) huge amounts of points. This feature of the mods is sometimes used to give a poster who puts up something which is very offensive a negative 10,000 score, for a week or two or more. This is called "going to Bolivia" or "going to Bolivian." (I think a poster confused "Oblivion" with "Bolivian" and the rest is mgohistory.)
That is interesting stuff. I wondered how people managed such huge point total. I know some people are avid posters, but 5 posts a day would still not total 2000 points in a year. I told my son when he turns 3 he can start his own account so that he can get a jump start on a massive point total.
Many thanks for answering a lot of questions I had but didn't ask, Stephen!!
at 100 points you can moderate
His film kind of reminds me of Mark Ingram. Quick feet and powerful. Also similar in that they are both not the fastest but are always breaking tackles.
Ingram was a bit faster.
With the high quality defense Hoke and Mattison are building and the o-line coming in, I love the idea of our offense adding a tough, bruising back like Smith so it can ball-control and just beat teams to death.
Also, when the fancy graceful stuff isn't working we're really going to appreciate how effective a lot of kinetic energy moving in a straight line is.
We have plenty of 5 star players on the team Dymonte Thomas, Shane Morris etc. Name a team that has won a NC without a single 5 star player. That's right you can't.
16 Commits for a recruiting class that won't officially sign letters of intent for another 11 months!!! That is bizarre!!! The fact that 13-14 of them are already 4 Stars and there may be a couple blooming concesus 5 Stars in the group as well is AMAZING. You sure wish this was a year you had 25-26 slots instead of 21-22.
If we do take Ty as a 3rd RB and then Levenberry as a 3rd LB, doesn't that leave us too few slots for our remaining needs in the Secondary and Defensive Line? Nonetheless, great work on the part of the Michigan Coaching Staff. I don't know how they are creating the urgency with the recruits to sign, but it is great to see.
Keep it going BLUE!!!
In case you're interested, here are my thoughts on Smith's commitment:
DeVeon must be Irish..good pickup..and that is said from a guy who watches him live every week.
In a pro style offense, I would imagine a rb like Smith is the most important kind of rb to have. I know that controlling the clock is a lot better on a teams defense and helps in the hard fought close games. It is always nice to have a homerun hitter, but the grind it out back has to be the most important.
I think the fact that he is from Ohio. and he did have an offer from Meyer, is being understated, this is a big pickup for the sheer thought that Ohio isnt getting him, add in the fact that he is a true manball back and I think this is a very nice pickup
Why does a kid lowly rated by the services have such an impressive offer list?
Nice, quality back. I have to believe this doesn't impact Ty much.
I like this pick up a lot, however it is making me think how much the coaches really like Shallman at RB. From their videos Smith looks like an even better bruiser than Shallman.
I don't get it. You seem to undervalue these recruits despite visual and other opinion/evidence. While I get that recruiting is dicey and subjective, I don't "get" where you're coming from with some of these kids. Kugler, Smith...? What is your basis for these evaluations? Slow offensive recruits; I trust the staff is recruiring needs, speed notwithstanding. Maybe some prefer they recruit speed at the expense of other skill sets. but don't count me among those.
Kugler was rated as a "Very good starter in the Big Ten; a good chance of All-Big Ten; and a likely NFL draft pick." If that's not good enough for you, then I don't know what to tell you.
I obviously don't like Smith as much as you do. Neither do Rivals and 247 Sports. Meanwhile, Scout seems to lean more your way. There are differing opinions on him. You don't have to "get it." But you should understand that he's not a shoo-in for awesomeness.
Seriously? I tend to agree with the empirical evidence presented via film and professional opinion; but since I disagree with the M-Go blogger recruiring gurus, it's flamebait? I've been following Michigan football since I was 4 years old. I saw the 24-12 "upset of the century', and all the other countless debacles and redemptions. My opinion may be in the minority (or not) but my degree and heritage earn the right to share it. When this kid runs for 1000-plus, or earn shis degree as a Michigan Man, remember his journey and be glad he decided to join the Michigan family.
No prospect is a shoe-in (shoo in); when a kid goes Blue, he/she is part of the Michigan family. I choose to embrace those commitments and welcome them, whether athletic boon nor bust. God Bless Walter Smith, et al. It doesn't matter if "...it's good enough for me." If it's (recruits) good enough for Hoke. Borges and Mattison, it's good enough..
That's fine. You're free to welcome them into the Michigan family. I welcome them, too. I want them all to be successful. I will root for them every step of the way.
But some of these kids WILL fail to pan out on the football field. There's no way around it. It's going to happen. Some will be successful, and some will be mildly successful, and some will probably be booted off the team or transfer. That's the way life goes.
I don't have to be a fan in the same way you do to be a fan.
