I WASN'T EVEN BUCKLED UP!!!!
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
I WASN'T EVEN BUCKLED UP!!!!
BUT GETTING HIT WITH THIS GOOD NEWS IS MUCH BETTER THAN GETTING HIT WHILE NOT BUCKLED IN!
I JUST WENT THROUGHT THE WINDSHIELD
AND WHY ARE WE SHOUTING? THEN AGAIN, WHY NOT?
Welcome, may you destroy many people for us in the near future.
I'm not ready for this.
Huge get! Welcome Darrin!
Confirmed via TomVH, Sam Webb, and Kirkland Jr. himself.
What does a commitment really mean these days. Still good to see though.
For the past week when I try to visit http://www.scout.com/ all I get is a blank page. Running FF 15.
Have they changed their site to a new address?
Works for me. They just overhauled their site this past week so that may be why.
In Safari there's no problem, so the problem seems to be connected to FF. I'm not having any issues getting to any other sites, and I can get to the Scout/GoBlueWolverine message board page in FF.. but not their home page. Are you using FF or some other browser?
"They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like part of the family," the 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker said. "They accepted me as part of their own and I know this is the right school for me and it feels great."
Firefox is up to version 29.
Welcome home Darrin!
It or ticket! Go Blue!
"Kirkland Jr. will spend just Saturday night in Ann Arbor and while all things are trending in a positive direction he told me that a commitment will not happen. He will stick to his timeline of an August decision date but another positive experience on campus definitely helps Michigan’s cause as these types of visits work wonders with recruits."
they actually use those hideous alternate uni's to recruit kids
"As soon as I saw the Block M on campus, I knew I was committing on this trip," Kirkland said. "I felt great about Michigan. My parents really like Michigan and I'm excited to be a part of the Michigan program."
Nice little start to this beautiful Sunday afternoon! Go Blue!
As pessimistic as I am about the direction of the program, they are still recruiting well despite all the negativity that has surrounded the last two seasons.
They refuse to be stopped!
Now we just need to win. That's all!
Well that's some nice and surprising news.
Tell me more about your experiences as a college football recruiting coordinator.
Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Penn State, Tennessee, Nebraska, and a couple of dozen other coaching staffs.
yes let's here your recruiting experience because since when is 6'2 225 small for a high school Junior?
name a team in his football conference, or what division he plays in without looking it up.
Kirkland probably got an OTPHJ from Big Mike's girlfriend at prom or something.
He plays in the MIC. Competition is unbelievable. Top conference in Indiana and ranked as one of the top conferences in the country. Routinely at least one team in the conference is ranked in the top 25 nationally if not more. Warren Central, Carmel, Ben Davis, Pike, Center Grove, Lawrence Central. May be other things to worry about (not saying there is) but the level of his high school competition is not one of the.
Yup. That conference is stacked. I'm a Lawrence Central alumnus, and when I was there we were in Conference Indiana. We would have been smoked in the MIC. Anyway, there are a TON of athletes in the Indianapolis area. Yes, It's basketball, but when i was in high school the MIC had Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Josh McRoberts, and Eric Gordon. George Hill and Jeff Teague were also in the area at the time, although in different confereces.
I would love to hear more too on how you coach pee wee football and can spot talent anywhere!
and you're the one who's right....
Big Mike, I hope you like hats more than points, cause more than one has just been handed to you...and, no, i don't mean points...
This is very welcome. Good day folks!
Potential stud. Size and athleticism. Huge momentum booster for this class.
I just flew through the windshield onto the pavement. Thanks for the warning guys.
Now if only we can manage to keep Crawford on board this defensive class would be something else.
Well, this is the sort of thing that can brighten up what is already a bright and sunny afternoon in southeastern Michigan, and with so little warning too - an excellent surprise indeed!
Welcome to Michigan, Darrin Kirkland, Jr.!
Troon Scotland...on my bucket list golf trip!!!
Jealous. Hope to get there myself someday! What courses are you playing over there?
with super high expectations and they were exceeded!!
Played Nairn, Castle Stuart, Royal Dornoch, Royal Aberdeen, Trump, St Andrews new then old, Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, Prestwick, Troon, Portland and finally Turnberry
Surprise commit Posbang!!
4* across the board, ranked from 5-7 ILB, depending on service. Scout likes him most, at #135 overall, Rivals has him#183, ESPN #256, and 247 has him outside their top247 (presumably just outside, given he's their #7 ILB)
Congrats young man!
I guess we can have nice things again. Look, too much talent is coming in to not win consistently. I still see the missing piece as being the DL. We need some dominant DL prospects. There are no excuses at the LB and DB positions......we have recruited very well there for 3 years now.
DT is going to be great, starting this year and getting even better over the next two (at least). At least that's what I believe based on the spring game. Pipkins and Wormley, our presumed starters at 1T and 3T, didn't even play and still we were loaded. Mone looks incredible. Hurst and Henry looked outstanding. Even have Glasgow behind them, and I believe Godin has good potential in the long run. Strobel adds even more depth.
We need outside pass rushers, but interior DL should be great, starting now. They will force double teams and allow Bolden (who I think beats out Morgan) and especially Ryan to roam more freely than in recent years.
I don't care if people say my life is lame because I pay attention to this stuff. OH HELL YEAH, OH HELL YEAH!!!!! Go Blue Baby! Malzone and now him? You gotta be kidding me.
Welcome to the family, sir. Happy to have you aboard.
I love his product line at Costco.
Dude has some arms on him!
That will help him with tackling and defending passes.
Why dont we switch to a 3-4 until our DL gets better. Seems like were incredibly deep at LB and lacking on the DL due to size (which is due to youth) and production. I believe we did that in 2005.
I love the 3-4 defense, and was really hoping we went to it some point in time.
Not permanent. Just until our young D-lineman add some weight and strength. I think Bolden, Ryan, Morgan, Ross, and Gedeon are good enough to start on most B1G teams. Plus Clark, Taco, and Mario could stand up at LB to rush.
Michigan was weak on the interior of the DL last year. Assuming that the majority of them don't take a year 2 jump (which is the conclusion you're making) means sticking more of them on the field at one time both at NT and DE. You're asking them to take on more responsibility to take on more double teams and keep the LBs cleaner (a problem last year). On top of now having three of those players on the field rather than two, you are depending on rotation more, meaning you also need more depth with those interior DL types.
So while Michigan seems to have very good talent a LB, moving to a 3-4 would hurt those LBs a lot as far as protection for them to make plays. That's not even addressing moving to that without ever practicing it going into Fall camp. They at least worked on the Over front last year, and had a spring to improve on it, moving to a 3-4 makes little sense for this team's personnel or for the current timing.
You also don't plan on a scheme switch completely for a temporary fix, otherwise you stall the improvement of the entire team for a temporary thing. You may incorporate some of those things (similar to an offense incorporating some spread scheme concepts), but you don't do something like change to a 3-4 for one year while the DL improves and then move back to what you're planning on doing.
not saying the team would and I agree with all of the points you made. I think some people just like the 3-4 scheme better, including myself.
I agree its too late to switch at this point. I just remember them doing it in '05 to play to their strengths and this year seemed like it would work too. rotate our 3 & 5 techs at the end position. Hurst, Poggi, Wormley, and Godin seem like they would fit in at DE in a 3-4 scheme. Make our rush ends stand up, and keep our NTs as is. In any formation its always going to come down to taking on and beating blockers to make the play.
Yet another reason mgoblog is awesome - coaches on here spitting knowledge left and right. I never thought about how both interior D line and linebackers increase in that D. I'm psyched to have Kirkland in the fold! The fact that we don't have to throw him out there immediately is even better. Depth is coming all over the roster and it will show late in games this year.
You cant just switch back and forth..College coaches have limited time with practices its not the NFL..its better to set a system and build it with recruiting..our defense is about to turn the corner in my opinion.
Mgoblog is a rollercoaster
I saw his comments about waiting until August too, so this is a big pleasant surprise! Congratulations to him, and welcome!
For those in the know...I happened to notice that he doesn't appear to have an OSU offer (according to ESPN). Are we at all worried that if/when they come calling he may have interest? I hate to say it, but I'd rather know now he has interest in them than be dissapointed later.
But not everyone dreams of playing for Ohio from birth, y'know Michigan's a pretty special place too
To many UM is a dream school. But, the reality is that the last decade has allowed OSU to distance itself quite a bit in terms of success from UM. So, when a guy is recruited by one they are often recruited by both...especially a defensive player from the mid-west. So, if he all of a sudden get an OSU offer I'm just curious what the overall concensus would be regarding the strength of his commitment to UM and his interest in OSU. I hate to say, but just because a guy says he's firmly committed doesn't make it so.
I had a feeling he might commit just from his comments that he wasn't going to do it. It seemed like he had it on his mind and he seemed to like Michigan a lot already.
Kirkland plans to graduate in December and enroll early.
He definitely made the right choice given his word choice:
"I got the gut feeling in my stomach that it's the right place for me," Kirkland said.
related to Sam Webb? I can live with that.
Great News! Now someone hurry up and give him Shaun Crawford's phone number.
Then he might decommit too!!
Welcome Darrin! This recruiting class is stacking up to be quite the unit with the potential to be beastly. Kirkland is a beast. He's a great asset. Roseboro is next. Now get Justin Hilliard, KLS, and Jashon Cornell on campus!
Get them on campus and anything is possible. Nice work by the staff!
is Just Awesome!
The guy definitely meets the eyeball test! Glad he got to experience campus with his family.
Having an upper tier linebacker corps is going to pay a lot of dividends on defense. I feel like Mattison can take Darrin a long way.
Also very excited that DK is already trying to reach out and recruit other players.
We needed a little shot of good news, keep 'em coming, coaching-staff 8-)
I will remember for a long time Kenny Demens putting Tyris Jones on his back to end the 2k12 NW game on 4th down, I hope Kirkland can show us a lot of that!
