This explains everything with recruiting!

The Indiana coaches need to call Mr. Telephone Man.

And a big welcome to Mr. Stribling.

I think this would be a fine

I think this would be a fine choice definitely if the coaches think he deserves an offer to come play at THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN. If we only have two spots left I would rather them go to McQuay and Bailey that would be a great little package. I know everyone is like what about Treadwell? but if we were to get bailey and already have Dukes, York we should be fine for next season. The 2014 class is going to produce some great receivers and we are in on some BIG names like Cory Holmes, Damon Webb, and Drake Harris and I'm sure there is more who will want to come play with sugar shane!

Good size frame and looks pretty fluid in his movements.  So if I understand this correctly, he camped at Michigan and then we offered him?

Of course we could.  Rankings

Of course we could.  Rankings are often very good tells of player quality, but they're not everything.  Sometimes great players are very underrated.  Mike Hart was a three-star on Rivals, and ended up being one of the best players in Michigan history.  Braylon Edwards (although he was being recruited in the very beginning of the Rivals era, and thus was not ranked), would likely have been a low three star or a two star nowadays judging by his offer list at the time.

Stars are great, but if the coaches see something they like, and the scouts see it too, then I like the call.  I could see this very easily becoming another situation like Conley's, with Stribling flying under the radar for the time being.

Also

I wonder part of the coaches' reasoning is to incentivize future lower rated kids to come to camp so they can get a look at everyone.  If there aren't going to be any offers and everyone thinks our class is full I can't imagine many kids without offers would show up going forward.

I'm sure the kid can play as well it's not all incentive, just maybe part

Welcome Mr. Stribling. I'm confident the offer was earned and look forward to see him suit up in the maize and blue. Let 's not become ND and base our greatness on the number of stars in our class. I have a feeling Stribling brings some major weapons to Ann Arbor.

Staee'ers say that "stars

Staee'ers say that "stars don't mean anything, we're getting guys Mork can coach up and be great" to excuse the fact that they're getting their butt kicked on the recruiting trail by teams that have been down compared to them the last few years (UM, PSU, OSU).

With how good the rest of our class is, I don't think saying "The Coaches have a sleeper here" is a problem on Commit 22

So let's combine the two...

So let's combine the two... Get some quality 4/5 star recruits who many feel are can't miss, and get a few sleepers here and there. I am no football coach, if Hoke, Borges, and Mattison say we need a long snapper, I support the decision. Mark Ingram, Mike Hart, Matt Ryan, Sam Bradford, David Harris, and Darrelle Revis were all under 4 star recruits.

What if these new recruits were reading mgoblog because they are excited to be committing, and all they see is "ugh, it's not "insert 4/5 star recruit name here." I say welcome aboard, and if they show the same passion about the university that Hoke and staff have, I want you more than someone who may not have the same passion. Go Blue

Bravo!

Bravo!

Well stated , sir (or madam). It is really disturbing to see posters complaining about the fact that a kid "took the spot of a better player" rather than welcoming the young man to Michigan.

I say, "Hail!" to young master Stribling.

  I am absolutely

  • I am absolutely thrilled with this committment for a number of reasons... 1. the kid must be something special (or at least comparable to other prospects) if he is offered a scholarship in light of the fact that we still have other highly ranked kids on the board...2. the kid came up and earned his scholarship in person.. in front of the coaches. There was no 'hype' surrounding the kid... he just came up and played football...3. he is a 6'2" corner that joins the number 1 class in the nation...

Congrats Channing Stribling...you'll be a player I personally root for in the years to come.

I just watched his video on youtube

The kid looks like a playmaker. He also plays wide receiver and can return kicks and punts. He reminds me a lot like Steve Breaston.

Everybody chill on the non-4-5 star whining.  The coaches have the inside track on all these recruits and they wanted him - the kid would have blown way up down the line, and he obviously really wants to play for UM.  Great addition.

Sometimes we have to realize that all of these recruiting sites are for fans and the coaches pay no attention to them. If the coaches like him then we should love him...unless he's a longsnapper of course...

For comparison's sake--not

For comparison's sake--not sure if the coaches see LMIII and Stribling as an either/or proposition--here's some video from each:

Stribling - http://www.hudl.com/athlete/911009/highlights/8492375

McQuay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZXcgrZpsCw

I think that's junior video for each, but I'm not absolutely positive.  Apply salt grains liberally.

The McQuay video doesn't really give you much idea how well he can run in open space until the end, but I think he's probably faster/more fluid than Stribling.  Stribling on the other hand is clearly playing corner; McQuay is more of a box safety in the highlights.  Stribling is obviously much rawer, but they're both definitely in the vein of the bigger corners like Conley and Standifer.  Not too hard to guess Hoke wants some size in his boundary corner.

Good point about the boundary corner.  We already have Countess, Richardson and Lewis for the field corner, and we needed another player with size for the boundary CB.

He shows a lot of burst speed

He shows a lot of burst speed in those highlights (Stribling), especially bursting off the line of scrimmage. He also makes defenders look silly in one-on-one coverage. None of his highlights for cornerback were anything spectactular (he looked really gassed on one of the attempted INT returns) , but what was spectacular was his athletic ability. A lot of those CB highlights showed him losing sometimes up to 2 or 3 steps and recovering back for the PBU. He'll need a lot of technical refinement, but the speed and athleticism is there.

Young Mr. Stribling has tremendous potential.  A 6'2 player with agility and speed like his is a rare combo.  He will fit into Mattison's defense perfectly.  Plus I'm sure Hoke has vetted him for high character.

I like the prototype the staff is recruiting.

Tall, lanky kids who may develop on either side of the ball.  Really smart recruiting. I think the staff will find the best position to employ each kid's skill set.

Apparently the staff cares

Apparently the staff cares about Michigan's camp beyond just next year's recruits. Go figure. It's possible the staff is making this offer to encourage rising seniors to keep attending, but obviously they see ability there as well. Whether this guy ends up a star or a benchwarmer, his (along with Jeremy Clark's) commitment will be scrutinized intensively, and unfairly given the smaple size, by the fanbase as future camps roll through.

Ball State and NC State...

Ball State and NC State... that was the competition per 24/7. Not exactly surprising he leapt on the offer like he did. I don't understand the hurry to take whoever wants to commit first regardless of skill set. McQuay was just talking about coming up to visit again with Bailey. Why take a sleeper if you can get an acknowledged stud? At least let things play out... they have until February.

I agree with this.

They had the kid in camp, had several eyes evaluating him, liked what they saw, and wanted him aboard.  In 4-5 years, we'll know how wise the offer was, just like we'll know how wise the offers were that went to the kids the star gazers love. No one is a sure thing.

Until they get on campus, stay healthy, develop, stay out of trouble, stay academically eligible, reach their potential on the football field, etc., we'll get fans either bitching or way too over excited about an unknowable future about recruit X. Not a lot in between. Probably a non-productive discussion, but it makes for decent off season debate and distraction.

given his lack of offers at a school coaches know to be a hotbed, i doubt they liked him better. but the choice between a raw guy who will actually commit and a let's say 30% chance at a finished product at this stage of the game probably wasn't too hard for Hoke to make.

Welcome to Michigan, Channing!

It seems like the coaches definitely going for the tall  CBs - Gareon Conley is almost the same in terms of height and weight, I believe. I do like that they seem to have a specific vision at every position.

but I am fairly certain the coaches know just a tiny little bit more than you do about what's going on with their recruiting class... and I am also fairly certain they wouldn't care a bit that you don't get it.

Not trying to be a dick, but some of us need to relax and let the coaches do their thing.

Just like how ohio ignores

Just like how ohio ignores kids in their backyard because they assume they can sweep in a grab them last minute? It doesn't always work like that, and he's not even from in state. If his recruitment heats up and he gets other offers closer to home, Michigan may have ended up out of the running. If the coaches like what they see after three days of camp, I don't really see a problem snatching him up.

Yeah, I don't get it either.  Greg Mattison probably looked at him and said "This kid doesn't deserve a scholarship" and offered him one anyway.

The coaches know much more about evaluating talent than any of us, so quit your bitching.  They have earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to evaluating potential.  Also important... we still have the #1 class in the nation.

Only the top x amount of

Only the top x number of recruits in each class count towards the team ranking to reduce the impact of schools that have massive class size. Can't remember the exact number and it may be different depending on the site, but taking a couple of unranked/low rank sleepers (or long snappers, ZING!) isn't going to hurt the team ranking.

Besides, having a recruiting class that fits the teams needs and the system the coaches are running is way more important than rankings and the coaches are the only ones in a position to make that call.

The LS

The LS scholarship I can get people questioning, because that's such a specific task and not usually a scholarship player. But with Stribling I'm not questioning anything. This kid has been camping her for 3 days now. If the coaches think he's good enough to earn an offer and accept his commitment, than so do I.

Welcome to Michigan Channing!

I'm with the coaching staff on this one - if they think he's good enough to earn and offer and accept his commitment, then he's no different from a 5* decorated CB in my eyes. Especially given the fact that he camped and they accepted his commitment in this near full recruiting class, it says alot.

Also, I dont know if this has been touched upon, but I'm pretty certain that Matthews HS in Charlotte is a strong football school that sends multiple D1 players to BCS schools annually. Jamar Adams alma mater?

In any case, I think this a great offer and a good segway into building a pipeline into Matthews.

What the hell...

#1 - Would you like a tissue?

#2 - How do you know that he needs to get faster? Were you at camp? Is that you Coach Mallory?

#3 - Who said we were ever going to get all three on your wish list?

#4 - Who says we still can't?

#5 - Posts like that are ridiculous...we should be happy for a kid who got an offer to attend one of the best universities in the world AND play football at the school we love, not whining about the crap you're whining about.

Bonus - You ALWAYS take kids who performed well at camp in front of your own eyes. You mix them in with the 5* and 4* kids would may have maxed out their potential. I've said this for YEARS. You need guys that flew under the radar and are just scratching the surface in addition to the kids who are highly rated going into their HS senior year.

How many times do you see a kid who's a top propsect because he's bigger, stronger, faster at the HS level, but gets to college, never improves and everyone catches up? This is a kid who the coaches feel can and will contribute in a major way with good coaching (which we have).

The kid comes from a prominant high school, maybe he had a 5* starting ahead of him and he didn't play much last year? Maybe he was late to the camp circuit? Maybe he's just now getting good? Who knows and who cares, all I know is our coaches saw him FIRSTHAND. We're not offering a 2* prospect that no one has ever seen. This kid was at camp and got an offer. That tells me all I need to know. It should for you as well.

CB is better for camp-evals than other positions

Most positions I would say film is better than camp drills: QB, RB, OL, DL, LB.  S is a tossup.  But WR and CB might be the two positions where I'd believe my eyes based on camp drills over game film.   Corner is really tough to judge by looking at game film unless you're in a league that really tests the CBs in a meaningful way.  You can easily play corner and go a whole game without a meaningful challenge that highlights your skills.  You can go a whole season without much showing up, for that matter, other than run support.

That said, I'm a little surprised that we didn't hear anything in the twice-daily feeds from camp on Rivals (or here) noting his performance in the drills.  They usually dig fairly deep into possible sleepers and he never came up to my recollection.

Anyway, welcome to the kid-- he passed the eye test of some seriously knowledgeable eyeballs.

Yeah, would love to see a camp report on him that was written before the commitment. Then it would be truly subjective

I am sure the coaches know a lot more about this stuff than we do.  This is why it's always a surprise to the people who follow recruiting when something like this happens.  I for one could care less about class rankings and more about bringing in kids who want to play for the University of Michigan.  If the coaches have to "beg" kids to come and play here, my guess is we don't want them!

FWIW, neither Bailey or McQuay were ever going to commit to Michigan.  Those who think that are delusional...it would be a long shot at best.

Welcome to Michigan: Where you are only accepted (by some fans) if you are a 4* or 5*

Random Thought

Stribling plays both CB and WR fairly well according to what I heard (and he has no stated preference for either).  So I wonder if McQuay can still commit and if he did Stribling's future would likely be at WR.  Plus as others have said, attrition will open doors.

I know the coaches said they wanted him as a DB, but if some other 5* falls out of a tree, that option is still open.  Personally 3* (which means starter in a BCS conference on the star) and  6' 2" sounds good to me.

My guess is that McQuay was a long shot and now see a lot of potential in this kid and pulled the trigger before his recruitment blew up.

This is hilarious

We've got a class brimming with 4 and 5 stars, one that will finish close to #1 in the nation, a better recruiting class than Michigan has had in years, and people are upset that the coaches offered a kid who they saw play with their own eyes, at a Michigan camp, and desperately wants to come here over some kid they haven't seen who a group of semi-professional talent evaluators said is good, who only maybe sorta wants to come here.

You people are turning into Bama. Seriously. "We don't want them unless they're a five star, and we're cool with screwing over anybody else for the next great five star flash in the pan."

All you people saying he's

All you people saying he's slow - You do realize that cutting to the side to avoid a tackle slows you down, right? I can count 8 or 9 instances on that film where he avoids the first defender with a juke to the side, but then is swarmed by 4 others. The only way you can make a comment about his SPEED is if he's running FREE in the OPEN FIELD, which he only does when he's running his routes, and if you look, he plays SLOT RECEIVER and so most of his routes are 7 yard posts, out routes, slants, CORNERS, AND WHEELS. Therefore, looking at his corner/wheel route is the best and only way to evaluate his SPEED from that film. And, if you look at his corner/wheel routes, he runs them with a LOT of burst and completely blows past the defenders.

Other than this, there is no way that you can judge his speed because there are always 7 unblocked defenders surrounding him.

Congrats young man.

So the coaches got a verbal from a kid they like football wise, and not only that, from what I understand, Channing is a pretty boi.

If his highlight film is a

If his highlight film is a representation of how he played at the camp, then the coaches probably want him for how well he plays deep downfield throws. He's 6'2 and does a good job of timing his path to the ball, putting him in good position to make a play on it. Looking back to the Ohio State and Virginia Tech games, Mattison has decided to leave the corners on their own and load the box versus run heavy teams. Va Tech and OSU then countered by throwing a parade of deep balls at JT and Blake. While we managed to not get killed on them, it was clear we had some issues tracking guys down field. I think Stribling was made to defend against those.

I put on Stribling's highlight reel and expected to see a Jareth Glanda clone, (god bless Jareth Glanda), but instead I saw a goht damn veritable touchdown machine. Hoke is a genius.

FWIW

People who are concerned about his highlight tape need to keep in mind that they offered him as a corner, not as a WR. The defensive highlights are scant, but he seems to show some pretty good hips and a willingness to hit. Plus he's 6'2", which is helpful.

I think

we can still get McQuay. Many scouts love Lewis at wide receiver. We get the desired number of receivers and DBs.

Interesting, Caleb Day just

Interesting, Caleb Day just committed to Illinois as well. He's a 4 Star athlete (according to rivals) from Hillard Darby who was also at Michigan's camp and was attempting to earn an offer. Which means that the coaches obviously thought Stribling was a better prospect.

It's official as of 8 minutes ago, per his twitter. It does not seem to be a grayshirt situation at this time.

He could be a sleeper

He got some looks from Auburn and Bama early on, and was mentioned as a person to keep an eye on last year by Dave Hooker (ESPN) and labeled him a sleeper

Excellent Strategy

If you want the best kids coming to your camps, you have to have a "scholarship" prize or two for the winners.  This assures you of seeing all of the late bloomers.

You get to assess a kids work habits, ability to compete, character etc.  I think it is brilliant.  Go Stribling!

Your data set: Fuzzy youtube

Your data set: Fuzzy youtube video and a number assigned by "experts" that assign numbers to thousands of HS kids by watching fuzzy youtube videos.

Coachs' data set: watching the kid over three days of camp, talking to the kid in person. Talking to all his coaches, parents, etc. Probably a lot more higher quality film. Knowing where we stand with other recruits. Knowing actual attrition situation. Oh yeah, and you know, actually knowing enough about football that people are willing to pay you large sums of money.

Welcome to the family Channing, may you wear the maize and blue with pride.

Concering the whole "too

Concering the whole "too slow, but decent game speed" argument. I had a friend in HS, who wasn't highly touted, he had some mild interest from D1 schools, including Syracuse. He wasn't offered any full rides at 1A level however he had loads of offers from 1AA. He (Terrell Whitehead) ended up at Norfolk State, ended up a 3 year All American, and Fresman All American. Went on to make the Jaguars squad, and is currently on their practice squad. Not too bad for a kid that people thought was too slow, and could never make it.
