Hello - Channing Stribling CB 2013

Submitted by SchrodingersCat on

According to Tremendous via facebook we have another!

Our first broken commitment. I just got off the phone with Channing Stribling who informed me that he will be committing to Michigan tomorrow.

Welcome to Michigan Channing!  I hope you put all of those rating services to shame after you become an All Big10 corner!

See you in the Big House.

Everybody chill on the non-4-5 star whining.  The coaches have the inside track on all these recruits and they wanted him - the kid would have blown way up down the line, and he obviously really wants to play for UM.  Great addition.

For comparison's sake--not sure if the coaches see LMIII and Stribling as an either/or proposition--here's some video from each:

Stribling - http://www.hudl.com/athlete/911009/highlights/8492375

McQuay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZXcgrZpsCw

I think that's junior video for each, but I'm not absolutely positive.  Apply salt grains liberally.

The McQuay video doesn't really give you much idea how well he can run in open space until the end, but I think he's probably faster/more fluid than Stribling.  Stribling on the other hand is clearly playing corner; McQuay is more of a box safety in the highlights.  Stribling is obviously much rawer, but they're both definitely in the vein of the bigger corners like Conley and Standifer.  Not too hard to guess Hoke wants some size in his boundary corner.

He shows a lot of burst speed in those highlights (Stribling), especially bursting off the line of scrimmage. He also makes defenders look silly in one-on-one coverage. None of his highlights for cornerback were anything spectactular (he looked really gassed on one of the attempted INT returns) , but what was spectacular was his athletic ability. A lot of those CB highlights showed him losing sometimes up to 2 or 3 steps and recovering back for the PBU. He'll need a lot of technical refinement, but the speed and athleticism is there.

Young Mr. Stribling has tremendous potential.  A 6'2 player with agility and speed like his is a rare combo.  He will fit into Mattison's defense perfectly.  Plus I'm sure Hoke has vetted him for high character.

Welcome young man!

Not again! How dare the coaches actually invite a kid they have an interest in to camp all the way from NC, evaluate him "in person" at the big house, and then call him up to Hoke's office and give him a scholarship. I think a congressional investigation is needed to find out how such an odd thing can happen!

Or maybe Mr. Stribling found the abandoned bottle of snake oil that RR left behind in some remote crevice of the Big House and used it on the coaches to coax them to offer him. Sneaky!

Regardless, Congrats to Mr. Stribling. May you defy the star whoring recruitniks and become another Michigan legend on what ever side of the ball you play on.

Yeah God for bid that some people question taking the commitment from a kid when we are still on some other great players. Glad to have the kid aboard but I hate when people act like fans have no right to question anything.
Good luck to the kid and no matter what happens hopefully he will graduate and be a great man.

Coaches SAW and COACHED this kid for many hours over several days. They had the ability to see in this kid what they never get to see in many of the recruits they have given scholarships to based solely on film.

That's the most IDEAL way to evaluate talent. Obviously you don't think so but I can't be responsible for your ignorance.

I'll side with the coaches when they have seen the goods in person over many hours over several days than your arm chair, online drivel.

Tall, lanky kids who may develop on either side of the ball.  Really smart recruiting. I think the staff will find the best position to employ each kid's skill set.

Apparently the staff cares about Michigan's camp beyond just next year's recruits. Go figure. It's possible the staff is making this offer to encourage rising seniors to keep attending, but obviously they see ability there as well. Whether this guy ends up a star or a benchwarmer, his (along with Jeremy Clark's) commitment will be scrutinized intensively, and unfairly given the smaple size, by the fanbase as future camps roll through.

both seem like pretty good guys to take a flier on.  solid athletes, good size, room to grow, potential to play multiple positions depending on how they fill out and the depth at the position is already there, so you don't have to count on them working out.

Agreed, but that should be a baseline expectation.  And congrats to Stribling for meeting it, but the intriguing, and unanswerable question is what was the opportunity cost to take these commitments?

Ball State and NC State... that was the competition per 24/7. Not exactly surprising he leapt on the offer like he did. I don't understand the hurry to take whoever wants to commit first regardless of skill set. McQuay was just talking about coming up to visit again with Bailey. Why take a sleeper if you can get an acknowledged stud? At least let things play out... they have until February.

They had the kid in camp, had several eyes evaluating him, liked what they saw, and wanted him aboard.  In 4-5 years, we'll know how wise the offer was, just like we'll know how wise the offers were that went to the kids the star gazers love. No one is a sure thing.

Until they get on campus, stay healthy, develop, stay out of trouble, stay academically eligible, reach their potential on the football field, etc., we'll get fans either bitching or way too over excited about an unknowable future about recruit X. Not a lot in between. Probably a non-productive discussion, but it makes for decent off season debate and distraction.

given his lack of offers at a school coaches know to be a hotbed, i doubt they liked him better. but the choice between a raw guy who will actually commit and a let's say 30% chance at a finished product at this stage of the game probably wasn't too hard for Hoke to make.

Good to have him aboard. I don't exactly understand it, but I am going to support it anyways...

....even if it jeopardizes my silly and mostly unimportant dream of having the nation's #1 recruiting class this year.

Tall corner that the coaches offered after seeing under a microscope for three days sounds good to me. Recent history has shown us that you can never have too many good defensive backs. Never Forget.

Welcome to Michigan, Channing!

It seems like the coaches definitely going for the tall  CBs - Gareon Conley is almost the same in terms of height and weight, I believe. I do like that they seem to have a specific vision at every position.

Congratulations  to Tremendous for breaking this one as well. Good work!

Maybe he's a late bloomer that the recruiting services overlooked so far, but what's the hurry? It's 7 months until signing day and we can afford to be both picky and patient.  We're still in the top 3 for a 5 star CB in Fuller, so why not at least wait until he decides?  It's not like Stribling was going anywhere in the meantime.  He would have grabbed a Michigan offer no matter when it came.

but I am fairly certain the coaches know just a tiny little bit more than you do about what's going on with their recruiting class... and I am also fairly certain they wouldn't care a bit that you don't get it.

Not trying to be a dick, but some of us need to relax and let the coaches do their thing.

DeepBlue83

whether he is or eventually could be a good player. The point is, why were we in such a hurry to offer him? We offered Kendall Fuller too, so obviously the coaches saw something in him as well, and in all of the other guys we still have offers out to. Have we given up ALL hope of getting any of those guys already? Why not wait and be sure we're getting the best possible guy for Michigan in that slot? We could have offered this guy on February 1st and still gotten him.

Just like how ohio ignores kids in their backyard because they assume they can sweep in a grab them last minute? It doesn't always work like that, and he's not even from in state. If his recruitment heats up and he gets other offers closer to home, Michigan may have ended up out of the running. If the coaches like what they see after three days of camp, I don't really see a problem snatching him up.

Yeah, I don't get it either.  Greg Mattison probably looked at him and said "This kid doesn't deserve a scholarship" and offered him one anyway.

/s

The coaches know much more about evaluating talent than any of us, so quit your bitching.  They have earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to evaluating potential.  Also important... we still have the #1 class in the nation.

Only the top x number of recruits in each class count towards the team ranking to reduce the impact of schools that have massive class size. Can't remember the exact number and it may be different depending on the site, but taking a couple of unranked/low rank sleepers (or long snappers, ZING!) isn't going to hurt the team ranking.

Besides, having a recruiting class that fits the teams needs and the system the coaches are running is way more important than rankings and the coaches are the only ones in a position to make that call.

The LS scholarship I can get people questioning, because that's such a specific task and not usually a scholarship player. But with Stribling I'm not questioning anything. This kid has been camping her for 3 days now. If the coaches think he's good enough to earn an offer and accept his commitment, than so do I.

I'm with the coaching staff on this one - if they think he's good enough to earn and offer and accept his commitment, then he's no different from a 5* decorated CB in my eyes. Especially given the fact that he camped and they accepted his commitment in this near full recruiting class, it says alot.

Also, I dont know if this has been touched upon, but I'm pretty certain that Matthews HS in Charlotte is a strong football school that sends multiple D1 players to BCS schools annually. Jamar Adams alma mater?

In any case, I think this a great offer and a good segway into building a pipeline into Matthews.
