Hello: Brian Cleary - QB (Preferred Walk-on) 2012

Submitted by wresler120 on

Michigan landed preferred walk-on 2012 Quarterback Brian Cleary from U of D Jesuit. The 6'3 205 pound quarterback had an offer from CMU, and will more than likely garner an offer from Michigan State next week. Welcome aboard!

I spotted this kid as a possible walk on some months ago because he kept turning up on the front page of Scout as a prospect.  I created a post about it back then with his highlights but could not get any confirmation or much interest from the board.  Definitely a great pick up to bolster our thin QB depth.  Coach Hoke proving that he is as adept at finding great walk-ons as he is at recruiting.

Good pick up for Michigan.  Cleary has the makings of becoming a decent QB at the college level, or at least a valued scout team contributor.

He is rough though in his mechanics. He sets his feet well, but he plays with a hunch and has a big wind-up release.  He takes far too long to release the ball.  His motion is not all that smooth, and he can improve on his arm stength quite a bit...especially when he gets propr tutoring by a solid QB coach who can work with him on his mechanics.

On the plus side, he appears to be very mobile for his height, and shows nice accuracy on many throws.  You can "coach" accuracy in a QB...however a certain amount of it is inherient to the individual's talents. This is very positive thing for Brian Cleary.

Good height, but a small build show that he does have the capacity to grow, add weight and strength.  A solid S&C program like Michigan's will do wonders to build this kid up.

He has a pretty good motion throwing on the run, but it looks like he needs to learn to set his feet and throw the ball. Could be a pretty good backup if he learns the mechanics well.

Welcome Brian!  Nice pick up.

He does need some work on his mechanics, but he's got really impressive touch when throwing on the run.  Looks like a gamer. Some kids just find a way to make a play.

Walkons with an offer from anywhere is pretty cool. probably will never see the field, but will get one hell of an education which is more than most schools will ever get to say.
