So... he's a good guy. Alrighty then. What's his coaching record?
Peppers at 10, which seems low.
So... he's a good guy. Alrighty then. What's his coaching record?
You're driving it.
My point wasn't to hate on Hoke. He's the guy they hired to coach and I'll support him. My point was more that these gushing quotes on his character mean little if he doesn't win football games.
With the trolling on our own site? You're supposed to troll opponents sites.
Good read. At first I was hostile to the thought of Hoke being hired. But I also didn't know all that much about him prior. Kind of just slipped out of my mind. But after hearing all the praise and what he did for two pretty terrible programs, I'm ready to give full support for coach Hoke. Give em hell Brady!
I lifted from DGDestroys twitter, while rummaging through TomVH's: Chris Pool, ESPN Midwest recruiting blogger, tweets -
"With Michigan hiring Brady Hoke, the Wolverines will be the team to beat for OL Chris Bryant (Chicago/Simeon)"
Start winning before even getting on the field BH - make Denard priority 1, then lock down this recruiting class (see Jake Fisher immediately).
Make today the bottom, all up from here
If he can get Bryant then awesome. His reputation is as a pretty good recruiter so I don't see why he won't be able to snag him. Shoot, maybe maybe he'll get his first jar of snake oil and wrestle Zettel away from PSU if Bradley bolts.
but only because I fully immersed myself in Hokeamania all afternoon and I've already read this stuff. Thanks for compiling it though.
I am a HOKEAMANIAC!!!
I'll give Hoke-A-Mania a try too. Hopefully he can get a little momentum on his side by hanging on to Denard, holding the recruits we have and getting a victory or two on the recruiting trail. I feel bad for the amount of garbage he's taking. Would like for him to get a win or two before before we get to the season to get some momentum behind him and the fan base excited.
You scrap his record from the past. Give the guy a chance to prove himself, if there is 1 thing we took out of the RR disaster is that if the fan base is divided it will NEVER work! Was Hoke my first choice? No, but he deserves a shot. Now give him a chance to do the damn thang! Get behind the program and GO BLUE!
I wish Rich Rod did; once he go hired, everyone was in a tizzy. He had to work with a horrible first recruiting class left over from the previous regime and had crap for QBs. He was set up to lose that first year. Second year he got his QBs, and he had a decent defense. The QBs were freshman so they weren't ready for the limelight that year. Come third year; our defensive stars jump to the NFL; our QB lights on fire, and we make it to a bowl game only to have Rich Rod; right when he's finally making progress end up fired. Now we have Hoke as our coach; he gets lauded as a good coach by players who made it in the NFL. However; with his track record and how it took him years to get San Diego St to the bowl game; I wonder if he will get the due diligence that Rich Rod gets since he will be coming in with a recruitment class that isn't his; and a QB like Mallett before him, might be transferring because of the change in coaching. My head hurts over all this crap to be honest.
why in all hell that is unholy should anyone just blindly get behind hoke when you all strung rodriguez up before day 1? its bullshit to the 10th degree and i'll lead the charge against him until he and brandon are gone. half the fanbase did it for the last 3 years and now because you're all giddy with a good coach fired, you expect everyone to buy into your bullshit and conform. give me a damn break.
I fully supported Rod just so you know. But everyone knew with the defensive deficiencies under GERG he'd be on a one year leash if brought back. And what top tier DC would come here if he couldn't pick his own staff and possibly only be there one year?
according to everyone here, "THIS IS MICHIGAN AND WE WOULD GET ANY COACH WE WANTED." brandon couldn't even convince 2 former players to listen to his crap before he reached for hoke. i'm not against hoke the person, i'm against hoke the coach and for good reason.
Fucking troll elsewhere, please.
And take that argument elsewhere for me. I supported RichRod til the day he got canned. But think about it, part of the problem w/ him was that the fan base was divided on the hire so it made it extremely difficult from day 1 to turn it around. And people will say that didn't matter but it did he needed full support of confidence. So if there is something i was hoping we all learned It's to get behind the.guy and support the PROGRAM.
over the last three years that I'll refuse to do the same now. By all accounts BH is a good man who sincerely loves his players an Michigan. I'm willing to join other Michigan players who know the man and support him and the program. If I could do it for hte past three years, see no reason to stop now.
Hole beat Navy this year in SDSUs bowl game, his second year with the school.
Hoke* god damn iPod.
So it takes him 5 years to go anywhere with Ball State. And two years to get them to third place in their conference. Yes he got them to a bowl game; but Rich Rod also got us to a bowl game; he missed out by one game from doing it last year as well. If beating Navy, an independent school with a poweder puff schedule, is his crowning achievement. Count me out. If you don't give a good coach a chance in Rich Rod, why give Hoke a chance when his credentials are so thin.
It took Hoke two years to get to a bowl game. Also, why all the semi-colons?
1) If RR's record merited it, he'd still be here. Stop blaming everything else and get over it.
2) Read Demens' comments. The players knew it wasn't working. Demens is one guy but it's hard to imagine he's the only guy that spent his fall chasing offensive juggernauts like Indiana and Illinois and Penn State up and down the field and thought, "man, if only we had Jeff Casteel..."
He got SDS to a bowl in two years (after a lonnnninnnggg bowl-less time)
This really has me in a positive mood. I think we learned an unfortunate lesson from the previous regime and that is that we cannot be divided as a fan base.
United we Stand. Divided we Fall.
If Hoke is our coach, then I look forward to being all in for Michigan with him leading us out!
nice work putting this together.
now that the drama is over, i'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of this transition develops. the guy is growing on me as i learn more about him, and i sincerely hope he does well.
That was encouraging. I'm glad he's likable and the alumni are behind him, because he's gonna need the help. This is a very high risk hire.
I keep hearing that Hoke is a "defensive minded" coach, but looking at his teams reveals that prior to this year, none had a better than average D-I defense. Here are the Total Defense rankings of his 8 teams:
2003 - Ball State - 71st
2004 - Ball State - 112th
2005 - Ball State - 111th
2006 - Ball State - 115th
2007 - Ball State - 96th
2008 - Ball State - 69th
2009 - SDSU - 74th
2010 - SDSU - 44th
I know these were not top tier programs, but that is eyebrow raising. Looks to me like the guy has succeeded more with offense than anything (Ball State's Total Offense was 17th in 2008; SDSU's finished 16th this season).
I'm also not buying into the "he turned around Ball State" meme. Ball State's SOS in 2008 was 125th. They had the easiest schedule in I-A. With the exception of Navy, Central and Western Michigan, every team they beat had a losing record and a Sagarin rating of 96th or lower (many of them MUCH lower). Then they got killed by Buffalo and Tulsa. They didn't play a single ranked team all season and the only AQ opponent was 3-9 Indiana. They had a nice season, but let's not go crazy; In 2008 Ball State was a "pretty good" MAC team, nothing more.
I really don't mean to blow up your optimistic thread. I like rooting for the underdog, and I'll be in Hoke's corner. But this really is the shakiest hire I can remember at a top tier program.
took him 6 years to post that record, 6 fucking years, and now everyone wants to give him as much time as it takes. not me, not now. he has one year to get to a bowl game and win at least 9 games or its lights out.
One year and you'll leave the fanbase? Oh pretty please. I can't imagine what an embarrassment you are in real life.
Six years at BALL STATE. Last I knew they weren't ever considered a player in the MAC. He got them 12 wins probably for the first time in school history.
It's shit like your "ultimatum" and how Rod was treated by a lot of the fans that make me shake my head in shame.
It probably means he's been fired for 3 years. No one is saying give him more of a chance than Rich. Just give him "A" chance. In actuality, outside of some in the media and a few ex-players, the vast majority gave Rich a chance, till he started losing. Enough of a chance? That's certainly a fair debate. But the idea that EVERYONE was out to get him wasn't the case.
He's started off good enough for you. 19-7, beat all 3 rivals, bcs bowl win...
I'm just pumped for all the awful puns
Like if we win the Notre Dame Inaugural Night James on a last second field goal I fully expect
and maybe if Denard sticks around and has a scintillating Heisman-worthy campaign capped off by a B1G Championship Game shellacking
maybe if he wins the Rose Bowl and the players hoist him jubilantly upon their shoulders
and let's say he somehow puts together a respectable recruiting class before Signing Day
Whoa whoa, he's bringing his RB coach and Strength guy? I'd like to keep Fred Jackson and Mike Barwis please. Jackson has a good reputation in the southern states and Barwis has an entire weight room formatted to his standards. Let's not mess with that.
A lot of It is guesswork now. It's also possible a coach comes along but coaches a different position (he was recruiting coordinator too). Unless you're a coordinator, positions can be fluid.
LOOK OUT BIGTEN, THE HOKESTERS RUNNIN' WILD!
This blog has been really disappointing over the last couple days. For the record, I REALLY wanted Harbaugh, dreamed of Gruden, and was meh with Miles, but I really like this hire. No, that shouldn’t matter to you, but just expressing an opinion. It’s clear the former players, and coaches and most importantly from recent reports, the players are really excited, too! I haven’t seen anyone bring this up yet, but Hoke is the same coach that gave us quite a scare in 2006 when we played Ball State as the undefeated #2 team in the country. You could argue that we took the foot off the gas towards the end or were looking ahead, but the disparity in talent between Michigan’s second string guys that year playing at the end of the game and BSU’s was probably made up for with the coaching of… Brady Hoke, and it was a very exciting/unnerving game as they were close to coming back.
Some of you will cherry pick stats with his record (I think I saw he is 1-17 vs. aq schools). No, that is not remotely impressive, but you picked the one number that is really hard to overcome being the coach of a MAC/MWC school. Talent tends to naturally be better at aqs than the non aqs. It’s known that many athletes will forgo scholarships to these schools to walk on a team in a prestigious conference like the Big Ten. Take away the difference in talent and he is 46-33 against similar opposition (thanks to OP in “Hokes Record”). That’s not a bad record imho (shock! Similar to JH at Stanford). So let’s see what this guy can do with talent that naturally wants to play at Michigan because it’s a Big Ten program and not just for being “Michigan”. I can just as easily say he will succeed as you guys can say he won’t, but I won’t make grand declarations like that. Hoke is now our football coach and that makes him OUR Michigan Man, so we must support him.
what is this trash? take away this, disregard that, hell, I can manipulate stats to say that my college coaching record is spectacular if I spent enough time on it. 47-50 is a horrible lifetime coaching record against like competition.
47-50 is not his record against "like" competition. That was the intent of the post. He has a winning record against similar competition. Let's see what he can do against our schedule with relatively similar caliber athletes.
neg away if you must but his record is 47-50, sub .500 and is bad any way you try to spin it.
Nice to see some of the MGoIdiots out in full force tonight.
The ignorance is overwhelming. He played 18 aq conference games. These were not like games. He was like 1-17. Take those out and he's 46-33 at schools that have either never been good or not for the last 40 years.
You seem to be quite content manipulating stats/circumstances to justify someone's 15-22 record.
Reflects my feelings perfectly.
M-Wolverine, thanks for being an ardent supporter of Hoke and backing it up with links. It is always easier to be a critic/pessimist, either you are always right or pleasantly surprised. Stay positive in the face of negativity. Victories and morale will improve. Go Blue.
My residual concerns: the players quoted as positive are Carr recruits (Stonum, Demens, Martin, Koger) or defensive players (Black). I want to see more positive input from Rodriguez's players, particularly on offense. If this is going to work out, the talent that we already have on offense will be key. I want it to work out.
Moreover, Steve Hutchinson is an offensive lineman. Brady Hoke, a DL coach, is the best coach he's ever had? Harsh on his OL coach, or dishonest?
Also, I know who Hoke is: Jeff Garlin from Curb Your Enthusiasm (uh, weirdly apt title?).
we didn't hire Miles or Harbaugh. If this guy is a players' coach, gets the kids through school, and competently runs the program, we can get OCs and DCs in here. Success at a real high level may not come all at once--and I have seriously questioned fans' demands for 10-win seasons annually, given our position. But I am ready to see what Hoke can do. . .
and desperate to get back to work!
Let's get this press conference over do I can just spend too much of the day on MGoBlog, not ALL of it, looking for news.
Thanks for the post. I'm in for Hoke. Lots of good there. I do worry about a few things though. First, while there's plenty to admire about the past, Michigan can't just return to the Carr era philosophies and expect to win championships.
It's clear that elements of the spread (in some version or another) are critical to winning in college. People were very critical of rr for installing his brand of offense in at Michigan without regard for the players on the field. Brady Hoke would be remiss to do the same. I hope he surrounds himself with good football coaches who can adapt to the personel on the field. The oc he's bringing sounds good, but he was the oc at auburn when Tommy tuberville was the coach. IIRC, it was their offensive ineptitude that got TT fired. I hope that was a fluke and this guy has an offense that can score points with the weapons that Michigan has currently in the arsenal.
Additionally, by all accounts, Hoke is a good recruiter. DB didn't do him any favors with this coaching search in terms of timing. However, if hoke can add to the current class with some solid talent, that would be huge in minimizing the time it takes for him to be successful here at Michigan. Again, surrounding himself with top coaches would be helpful, and keeping barwis and Jackson would probably be a good idea.
Hoke is our coach (the iPhone is finally not autocorrecting hoke, so it must be true). I think everyone wants him to win here. I wish there was more buzz around his hiring to help with recruiting. Currently that's my biggest worry, but i think if he can get top talent in the coordinator positions, it will help get everything off in a good direction.
But Auburn's offensive problems came when they went to spread and back in like one season. This OC had an undefeated season with Auburn. Really, Tuberville was a victim more of ongoing politics. I mean, in the end it worked out for Auburn, but they had a lot of good seasons it seemed like they were throwing away.
the spread is. Wisconsin seems to do oh with power foosball.
right right, the same wisconsin that just lost to a non AQ TCU team in the rose bowl who runs the spread offense, yes that wisconsin.
Thanks for all the background on BH. Even though his overall record isn't spectacular it sounds like he's got it together. Let's see what he can do at a once-elite program.
I like DB's quote, "I've always believed you never underestimate the power of someone who has something to prove." If he doesn't work out, life goes on, but he could turn out to be a big hit...just give him the support he needs!
Speaking of DB, he played us all didn't he? Sounds like he was laughing his "ass off" in some nice cozy office while we all thought he was traipsing around the country getting on his knees for the "popular" choices. Well played DB..well played. Do we all feel like fools?
I still think criticism of his "process" is valid. Not sure if we were going with Hoke why we didn't get him in awhile ago to recruit. But nothing we can do about it now. Though I don't have any problem with criticism of how our AD handled it all.
wow, so a coach that didn't ask about any details of the job and that would have been in ann arbor before the start of the second half of the bowl game was the #1 choice hired a week and a half after brandon had already made up his mind. you can smell that garbage at stanford, lsu, and back across the whole country.
Thanks! That's some good stuff there. I also found this article when I was on f 11 warriors reading what others around the B10 thought of the hire. It's an interesting read.
Glad the players are excited. Don't really care how Braylon "University of Lloyd Carr" feels, but it's great to hear that our current players are buying in already. I have no doubt that Hoke is a decent fellow and a decent coach. I still worry about our offense though.
But I would hope we'd keep Barwis.
The term "player's coach" had me a little uneasy to hear it because it just seems like such a negative thing at the NFL level, where you only ever seem to hear it. I then reminded myself that this isn't the NFL level and that Pete Carroll was always viewed as a "player's coach". Not that I expect that kind of results, but it shows it can work and be welcomed within a successful team.
I'm all in.
Gives us some hope especially for those who don't know him and hate the hire just because of the unwarranted negativity presented before this.
