Hello: Ben Gedeon
Still not shocked.....
I hate double posting on this board
Figure he was locked up for quite some time now!
aboard Ben. A nice surprise to start off the week.
It is the best word with which to open a thread title. However its power can also be terribly misused.
Great song too
That is an incredibly astute observation. I also have a strong Pavlovian reaction to the seeing the word "Hello." Not hearing it, mind you; but in written form, it gives me a great deal of happiness.
Huge! No excuses for OSU on this head-to-head recruiting battle. Now Levenberry or bust for LB i guess.
MGOBLOG is crashing!!!!! It took me 5 minutes to get this to open.
WHOOOO!!!!! Ben Geddddeup!
Bobby petrino crashes in less time than that
Had a pretty awesome day all around(not going to bore with details) and a Hello post is the capper!! Welcome aboard kid!
Thanks, much appreciated.
But I suppose I can't start new threads anyway. This is still a great add!
Well done beating the other 2 posters! Haven't seen a triple post in a while. Congrats on being the first!
YES! Welcome Ben! GO Blue. Now...Come on down...Issac?
I've seen this misspelled so many times on here I'm starting to wonder if there actually is an Issac. I'll chalk this one up to excitment.
Simple typo. Blame it on Gedeon. The excitement got to me
we're going to have to settle this like men. meet me at the monkey bars during morning recess.
One knee picture ownage overload... Crable one knee picture ownage overload..error.. error....
I'd say he laid claim to it before you. Back in the day Coach would just send you two out to the ring with a set of boxing gloves. Last man standing - gets to keep it. The other, has to put up a Hello Kitty avatar... forever.
When he told the coaches. If he in fact let them know when he visited it does explain why they are telling other LBs that they are full.
Welcome Ben, you are a part of a very special class.
Nice! Great pick up. This kid will be good player and a team leader. Quality player and quality person.
He didn't have a commutable offer from OSU, obviously.
Commutable? Would they not get him free cars or something?
Damn, didn't even realize that. Got boned by the unforgiving autocorrect.
I took it as a dig at the average Ohio fan's vocabulary.
He did at one point, but Urban obviously cooled on him. Why else would he commit to TSUN?
*crushes beer can against forehead*
Gedeon is a high character kid and that's why Meyer cooled on him.
That was inadvertently awesome.
Hell yes. This makes Levenberry pure luxury at this point.
Can I haz that luxury?
I has opulence
Great pickup. Goes to show how good this staff is at early talent evaluation, how many commits in this class did michigan offer first?
and we already have two double board posts. Everyone wants to break the news!
Very happy to have Ben aboard, another great pickup in Ohio. Though not unexpected, it's nice to have it official (as official as it gets as of now) and allow the coaches to continue to focus on other recruits. GO BLUE!
this post is 10 minutes old.. and no kate upton...?
The real question now: who is the second commit for this pair?
This same thought came to my mind, Who are the other 7?
Pair? My guess is we fill out our class by sundown Wednesday.
A Spring Game commitment is hereby declared to be within the Hoke's Ark requirements.
Somebody wake up Ace.
I love a new linebacker in the fold and one has to wonder on the timing of this given the reports of Levenberry spending a week at FSU.
Either way welcome Ben Gedeon!!
I think your right about timing but wrong about why it went down. I think Gedeon knew Levenberry was coming for spring game. Levenberry commits no open spot for Gedeon. Just my opinion.
You might be underestimating how much the coaches wanted Gedeon. He brings a lot to the table in addition to being a really good player.
The coaches stopped recruiting other LBs a while back when everyone expected Gedeon to commit. They didn't stop for Levenberry, who seems as if he will take his time, so they must have known Ben was going to be on board someday soon.
to the Family.
Speaking as an OSU fan I can tell you that Urban def gave Gedeon a commitable offer and we lost this one head-to-head. Great job by Hoke and co. Ultimately won't hurt too much if we can lock up Anzalone (they would play the same position for us) but still hurts to see a talent from Ohio go to that state up north ;)
Did you read the Ozone article about how Meyer was "dominating" Michigan on the recruiting trail? I think that's been more than disproven at this point. He's going to win some, we're going to win some, but regardless it's a big deal to go down into Ohio and grab one from him.
Did you read the Ozone article about how Meyer was "dominating" Michigan on the recruiting trail?
Yep, I did. Any Buckeye fan that thinks that Michigan won't continue to nab top recruits simply because we have Urban Meyer is naiive. The truth is that Michigan is a top 5 college football institution and any player should be thrilled to go there. Same goes for The Ohio State University. Unless something crazy happens, I expect Michigan and Ohio State to have top 10 classes year in and year out...maybe even top 5 classes year in and year out.
That being said, I do think too much is being made of the whole Hoke v. Meyer recruiting battles. The truth is that both are going after different types of recruits for the most part, especially on offense. Also, we have a small recruiting class this year considering the low number of seniors that graduated and the scholarship losses from the NCAA sanctions--which means that we will be more patient to fill our class since we have to be a bit more selective.
None of this ultimately matters with regard to Gedeon, however. He's a great talent, and one that Urban wanted very much. Most Buckeye fans understood he was likely a Michigan lean (as it seems you guys did, too) so it's not a surprise per se, but it definitely stings.
Just hope we can return the favor with LaQuon Treadwell ;)
Just for $hits and giggles please share your perspective, as a Buckeye on how MSU a (our school up north) nd Dantonio are perceived in Ohio. Please humor me, I have a point other than Lil Bro is still insignificant.
Michigan State is a second-tier football team. They'll field a good team every once in a while, but they don't belong in the conversation with Michigan and tOSU. Every time we play MSU we expect to win. Period. I can't say the same with Michigan--even when we had that run under Tressel against you guys.
We perceive Dantonio a little different than you guys. We don't love the guy at all, but he's not hated per se (like I'm aware he is with your fanbase).
Bielema, on the other hand, we absolutely cannot stand. Like, at all. He's our Dantonio.
UFM, do you think Smith will end up at Ohio or ND?
Unfortunately for tOSU, I think he's a Domer. Hope I'm wrong. Bottom line, I think he's enamored with the idea that he will be the next Manti Te'o (i.e., the centerpiece to the Irish defense). And there's always the "close to home" aspect.
I expect us to nab Anzalone (who Urban's super high on) and Courtney Love (insert drugged out female rockstar joke here). Maybe one more (Kimbrough, if he's offered, would be my guess). Seems to me like Urban isn't as worried about the LB position in this class seeing as we had a good haul in the 2012 class (and we have a lead with some sick LBs in the 2014 class). If we lose out on Anzalone (to Florida, for instance), we are in some trouble. Anzalone fills a need at the Mike (which, by the way, Gedeon would have filled...sigh).
You. You can stay.
Don't get your hopes up on Treadwell though. Hoke called "dibs" a long time ago.
Haha fair enough. I agree that he's all but a Wolverine. One thing that will make this interesting is that he strikes me as the type of recruit that loves the recruiting process. I'd be shocked if he commits anywhere in 2012--he'll drag this one out and milk it for all it's worth.
Sidenote--any interest on this board to have an OSU fan (i.e., me) post a thread every once in a while giving you guys a rational OSU fan's perspective on the OSU recruiting situation? I'm not an insider, but I subscribe to a lot of insiders and am generally pretty well tapped in, so to speak. Anyways, I'm always interested to see what the "enemy" is up to (hence, I'm here posting on your blog) so I figured I'd offer my services to give you guys a glimpse. Just a thought.
Short answer: yes.
but thinking "RDT" when I read your posts?
Hahaha. I presume you're referring to Roll Damn Tide. I like that kid, but unlike him, I can't think of two nice things to say about Nick Saban.
Was thinking the same thing. Nice try rdt
Hodor, Hodor, Hodor.
Hey Urban. We're in ur state stealing ur dudz.
"Linbackers is coming..."
Must've told he to follow him heart
Welcome to the family Ben. Hopefully he's the first of several commits this week
Since his nickname is "The Freak" can we get some people who know how to embed pics
put in some Rick James pics.
Very excellent pickup! Will someone remind me which LB position he projects to again?
At 6'3, wouldn't he also be a good prospect for SAM?
From what I've read, probably not, which is why we brought in McCray and are still going after Levenberry. He seems more like an inside linebacker to me, like Joe Bolden (who I believe is 6'3").
I've also read that 6'2" is a more accurate height for Gedeon.
Welcome aboard young man.
This kid has NFL potential...
It's almost like the coaches knew what they were doing when they told O'daniel we were full. Now will everyone please stop second guessing them.
Wait. Our coaches, know what they're doing? Prove it.
Pffft. No way. Those guys might be paid to do their job, but I have personally won the national championship multiple times on xbox.
This made me laugh pretty hard.
Welp. There goes my night of studying. Team134 is my antidrug.
Welcome to the family, Ben. You've taken your first step into a larger world.
Some might say that since coach Hoke has arrived its been One Big Holiday!
That Ben's commitment is no longer OFF THE RECORD, off the record
Some great new right before bed..Tomorrow is already amazing. Congrats BEN GEDEON
who is less than 15 minutes from my house. I will be real busy this Ohio High School Football season with Dymonte, Gareon, Gedeon, and Deveon Smith is less than an hour away. Can,t wait till August
Load up the Creeper Van:
Look forward to hearing your thoughts on these guys.
But Brian should have surgery every day! Brian Surgery = 4* Commit.
Geeze. I wonder what the hell happened to him that weekend in February...
Imagine if he needed a triple bypass.
Hello: Stefon Diggs
...can we get if Brian has a vasectomy? Maybe a Su'a for the herni'a? (all of a sudden a Kickstarter sounds painful)
That was Cartman gets an Anal Probe level (I'd post a pic but no idea how on the app). Pretty sure Brian should get that checked.
I thought Meyer was targeting Analzone.
It's been too long, old friend "Hello:"
Welcome to the family, Ben!!
I love these HELLO posts!
Remember that BS article that talked about Meyer probably winning the bulk of recruiting battles against us? I'd say it'spretty near open season in the state of Ohio.
8 Ohio kids now, 7 of whom are 4 stars to ay least one of the 3 services who have released rankings. Further, one of those players is a 5 star on one site
If we don't get Levenberry, then I'd be happy with seeing if we can get O Daniel.
We probably burned the boats with O'Daniel...
over to 11warriors to see how they spin it. . .
So I don't have to go there myself
WEBB IS THE MAN!!!
Looks like OSU fans are going crazy over their new TE commit from Cali instead of talking about Gedeon. This even though the kid is ranked behind Butt, and not in their own state.
I realize Jake Butt is ranked higher than Baugh in some sites, but I can assure you that Butt was never high on Urban's list. Butt visited and had plenty of opportunities to receive an offer from Urban but it never happened. Baugh, on the other hand, received an offer without having even visited.
I am tapped into OSU recruiting (being a hardcore OSU fan) so I know a lot about Jake Butt, and not much about Baugh, so I can't speak as to what Urban saw in one that he didn't see in the other. But I guess coaches go by things other than what Scout or Rivals say (imagine that!)
Congrats again on Gedeon, though. Like I said earlier in this thread, this was definitely a kid that held a commtiable offer from tOSU and one that Urban wanted. Not a surprise to see him choose you guys (11W had been calling this one for you guys for some time) but still stings, etc.
What's it like being the reasonable The Ohio State University fan?
Hahaha, I swear we exist! I know we have some idiots that give the fanbase a bad rap, but we're just a diehard fanbase very similar to yours. It's what makes the rivalry so special. We're not a basketball fanbase like MSU. We eat, drink, breathe, bleed good ol' hard-nose football.
I know Baugh is probably a bit more athletic and Butt has better size so both sides got what they wanted. Very good pick ups for both sides tonight, looking forward to seeing Gedeon go against Baugh.
I think Baugh fits more of what Meyer wants in his TE's. He's a bit smaller than a traditional TE, but very athletic and a good pass catcher. Butt fits into what Hoke really wants because he has the frame to also be a forceful blocker in power running schemes. One of those times where different staffs are looking for different things.
let's get levenberry (who probably is a SAM) and go home.
Great pick up! He was the second most wanted linebacker that I wanted right behind E.J. Levenberry because he's from Ohio and he had an osu offer. Hopefully E.J. pulls the trigger during the spring game for the last spot.
meyer will prolly say he didnt mean to offer him a scholarship and they dont want him....GO BLUE just gettin better and better
They'll probably recruit a lb that's lower ranked and twist it because he's from a different state and has a better 40 time.
Haha, hate to disappoint you guys, but Meyer has definitely made it known that he wanted Gedeon and his offer was certainly commitable. No spin. Good nab, Wolverines.
Now gentlemen - I know that it's lame when Buckeye fans make excuses on their blogs after we get commits, but it's equally lame when half our posts say "I bet the Bucknuts/Urbz are gonna say _____ but it's totally wrong cuz our guys are awesome!" or "let's go over to eleven warriors so we can read them saying all the things that piss us off!"
They're gonna be upset when we get a head-to-head recruit, and not all of them are gooing to be mature about it, just like some people around here when it happens the other way around. Drop it.
There's no reason to put words into the mouths of OSU fans. They'll either react as you say, in which case we can read and smile knowing that we are correct or they'll own up to losing out a good recruit that they wanted and we can be happy that they recognize the pain just inflicted upon them.
Let's get a Declaration of Independence style roll call of signatures going!
The meme is already getting a bit old. I'd like us to be happy about the players we get more than happy that we robbed another team of a player they wanted. Ultimately, the players that commit to Michigan are going to play like Michigan players and not like players of the programs of our rivals. They are going to develop differently and be different players. Let's enjoy the guys we get.
I think we get the number 1 class if we get Isaac, Treadwell, Levenberry, Poggi, Mathis, Cravens, and Devon Allen, Massington. I think Poggi, Levenberry, and Isaac will pull the trigger pretty soon, but we will have to wait until the fall for the rest.
There were some rumblings that he would visit again the first week of April or at the Spring Game. Obviously the first week of April has passed. Is he not visiting for the Spring Game either?
we will have the number one class.
That would be the number one recruiting class in Michigan history, and one of the best hauls any school has ever gotten. I'd love to get all those guys...but I don't see it happening.
PLEASE, BRADY, PROVE ME WRONG.
Looks like we have another one.
In reply to this:
Michigan also now has 7 commitments that hold an offer from Ohio State or Alabama. They had 5 total from 2008-2010
Shane Morris said this:
@TomVH haha 8...
Shane trying to out-cryptic TomVH?
Tom followed up by saying that #8 is Shane. Shane has an Ohio offer but not many people know about it apparently
I think Shane is just saying he was offered by OSU or Bama as well...
Shane confirmed that his offer is from Alabama. According to 247 that would give him offers from Auburn, Alabama, and Michigan State among others. He also said to Tom "I don't report any of them," in reference to his offers he's received. There goes OSU fans argument that "Morris is overrated, look at his offer sheet."
Shane doesn't want to sully his good name with offers from such places. We should respect his wishes and never speak of this again.
And this may be obvious, but if Urban fails in Columbus or if Urban has a really terrible record against Michigan, there will be books written about his time in Columbus and they will all say that one of his primary failings was allowing top Ohio players to escape the gates of fortress Ohio. Specifically, escape north to Ann Arbor
After having not a ton of a success in there under Richrod, we've already snatched away Kalis, Gedeon, McCray, Jake Butt, Strobel, Bolden, etc, etc. Those are significant pieces to our '12 and '13 classes and I doubt we come away with even half of those guys if Tressel is still around
Did we ever have success like this in Ohio before RR? That was before I started following these things.
That Bo guy did pretty well in Ohio. I remember one year he took two teammates, Elvis Grbac and Desmond Howard, who you might remember.
But seriously, both Bo and Moeller, who are both from Ohio, recruited Ohio very well.
Yep those would be the types of guys I was inquiring about. Griese and Woodson are the oldest guys I can remember actually watching live. Haven't really looked back into the 90s at where guys came from though and didn't know Grbac was an Ohioan. Here's to hoping someone asks a similar question in 15 years when MGoBlog owns the internets and WolvinLA3 responds with Hoke recruiting such historic figures as Dymonte Thomas and Deveon Smith.
Dan Dierdorf, Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson, Rickey Powers, Elvis Grbac sound familiar? All Ohio kids. Trent Zienkowicz (sp?), Morrissey (both), Andy Cannavino, Pierre Woods. There are a ton of them.
Why they write books if no one in Ohio can read them?
Loving the irony of this post.
Haha, not trolling here, but just wanted to ask the obvious question that comes to mind when I read Michigan fans making this kind of joke about Ohioans: You do realize that most of your beloved Michigan men (and a lot of the recruits you hold dear--including Gedeon) hail from the great state of Ohio right? Haha, just seems like if Brady Hoke were on this board, or Bo Schembechler, (I could go on), they would not find that kind of humor so humorous? Just curious. Congrats again on Gedeon.
Your argument is invalid.
I believe that is called a "pooler"
/pun, mind blown
Essentially, we recognize that every now and then [the state of] Ohio produces something worthwhile- which we proceed to rescue by bringing it back up north.
More seriously, anybody that frequents this blog knows all of the important coaches and athletes that have come to Michigan from Ohio. We recognize that without pilfering the buckeye state, Michigan wouldn't be in the position it is today. We accept this though because by doing so we hurt our mortal enemies not only be depriving them of strength but by then using that same strength against them.
Thus, we appreciate Ohio- as long as it's the bits of Ohio that have had enough sense to move up north.
I, an many other MGoBloggers, enjoy the perspective of a rational OSU fan. Thus, I'd encourage you to keep posting.
I agree, I would like to see him stay as well. Unfortunately, he’ll likely get dissuaded by all the clever “lol, cooler pooper” and “O$U sux!” comments he gets.
Haha, nah. If I got offended by comments like "you poop in a cooler" then it would likely mean that I do, in fact, poop in a cooler and hate being called out on it.
Disclaimer--I don't poop in coolers.
But If you were in a bind, I'm guessing your fandom would lead you to pack an Igloo in a pinch...
Pinch. See what I did there?
My UM roommate pooped on a keg. He's still my friend. So, it's ok if you poop in a cooler. I won't hate you.
Well, they obviousely committed to Michigan so they can learn to read good. sheesh.
Eh, just all in fun. Everyone here realizes the importance of Ohio to successful football, and that goes for the entire Midwest too. But we can still make fun; all part of the rivalry. And obviously, when a native son of Ohio decides to attend the University of Michigan, they transcend the existence of an "Ohioan" and elevate to another, greater, plane in the universe.
The ones that can read come to A2.
...it's liking ohio and/or going to school there that really scrambles your brain. Plenty of Michigan Men have been born all over the country, Ohio included, but they weren't ohio fans.
A good point. I would also like to point out that for probably 99% of the rest of the world, no distinction is made between the states of Michigan and Ohio. They're just failing rust belt states where it's vaguely cold and the people there are kinda the same.
Just sayin' from an outside perspective.
I heard The Beatles sing about his Bible in a song...
in their song Locomotive Breath
Oh Ace, Ace, wherefore art thou Ace?
He’s denying his father and refusing his name this very second, I bet.
Kid has impressive acceleration to the ball carrier. Might be making reads a hair slowly, but damn he brings the wood once he locks on
Bolden 2.0? Relatively under the radar guy with sound technique that hits like a truck. Also similar size. There's a long time for him to climb some recruiting rankings as well.
He is a lot like Bolden - a tough, heady inside linebacker with similar size. And he's about where Bolden was ranked, maybe a little higher, before Bolden blew up at the UA All-America game. Hopefully he proves he's as good as Bolden is.
He is absurdly fast for his size. He is breaking runs and out-pacing CBs and Ss. And he's still just a junior? He has Brian Urlacher athleticism potential.
Quite frankly, it isn't fair for a man that size to be that fast.
some of your fans apparently
This also has the potential to be the best class in Michigan football history. I think 2005 was 2nd in the country.
I don't know -- the 1898 class was pretty killer.
I love this class, too, but these kinds of statements are a little ridiculous.
I'm not saying it's a done deal or anything, but based on who we have and who we could likely get, that statement's not exactly a stretch.
The 1998 class with Henson, Terrell, and Fargas was ranked #1 in the country by a number of publications if I remember correctly. I know that recruiting services were far different at the time, so caveats apply.
says he is a high-character kid and very smart academically. It also says academics played a role in his decision, which help explains his migration out of Ohio. Great get. Welcome Ben!!!
Do recruiting profiles ever say a kid is low character?
They might not say that he's low character, but they sometimes avoid saying another at all about character.
He commits after his Stanford visit and before Levenberry visits.
Hopefully Levenberry feels the pressure from Michael Hutchins renewed interest.
Pressure and Time? That and a big goddamn poster.
I think the coaches are trying to recruit 3 linebackers in each class..one for each position. They did last year and it seems to be what they are trying to do this year.
Bro, you're sample size is 2 years. If Levenberry wasn't such a stud, I'm sure the coaches would be quite content with just 2 LBs in this class.
For some reason I thought we already had him. But yay! Another 4*!
For the record, we now have 13 commits included in the Rivlas 250.Those with the next most are Ohio, Florida, Texas and Bama each with 7.
....Happy Easter to you as well !! jt
Welcome to the Wolverines!
It has been a while since a "Hello:" post, I believe - nice to have one in this post-Easter week as a late addition to Michigan's Easter basket. It's great to see that we can win the battle in Columbus' backyard with some consistency yet again.
Huge get gonna be nice having 4 stars rotating in and out,Something we havent seen in forever. Hope we get to the point where bama is they got saint-Dix the best player overall a few years ago and they have the luxury to let guys develop first.
No Denard and Roy dancing?
I remember about a year ago Sam Webb doing a recruiting article on DetNews about this stud linebacker from Ohio, Ben Gedeon. Little did I know at the time he would eventually be a verbal committment to Michigan. Awesome to see it finally happen.
Now my head can spin on Saturday!
Welcome to the Fold!
Brady Hoke continues to impress the people in ohio with what he brings to the table . . . a Straight Shooter!
Good pickup for you guys. He's an intelligent kid with a lot of athleticism. He'll be a player.
