Hello: 2014 LB Noah Furbush

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Per Steve Lorenz at 247, the LB will join the 2014 class. Looks to be a consensus 3* to the major sites.

Are you sure?  I thought I'd read that the coaches saw Tranquill as a guy who could add size and become a big, strong, athletic LB; hence, they were recruiting him as such.

Either way, congratulations to Noah Furbush!  Now I won't be able to avoid thinking about UM football whenever I drive through Kenton on US-68.

This seemed like it was coming for a while. Big kid, could be a huge LB or a smallish DE.

Look like we have two SAMs and Ferns who can play multiple positions.  I like the flexibility here and it seems like we are getting much bigger across the board at LB.  Welcome aboard Mr. Furbush....another Ohio kid seeing the northern light.

He was measured at a combine this spring at 6'4 and 236 lb.  That's over a full year away from graduating high school, so that's one big LB.  His 40 time was 4.78 at the combine.

His shuttle and L-cone times were absolutely great for a kid his size, beating most of the DB, RB and WRs.

Well, I came here to sort of write a post bitching about filling up the class so quickly, especially with other big time prospects still interested....

But, then I watched Furbush's film, and it looks really good haha...

Has great size, and depending on his lateral quickness, he could probably play any of the 3 LB positions...

Also, I don't know why people seem to think there is a height threshold for MLB??? I can name a ton of MLB that are 6'3+...

All I can say is, under Rod when we got a 3-star I was pretty excited and now I'm all like "eh, that's good, stay out of trouble." Still happy though, obviously.

3 stars are the toughest to project. Usually they're 3 stars because they're talented but raw and their future production depends on development. Well some kids max out their talents before they ever set foot on campus while others become Jake  "Ultimate Warrior" Ryan after a little coaching. So for now be excited, yeah, he may end up being just a spot on the roster or he may end up the best player on our defense in a few years.

Welcome aboard Noah!! #goblue

I get you, but come on, man. I don't think you're giving these guys enough credit. Jake MF Ryan was a three star and look at what's happened to him. 5 stars bust just as often as 3 stars blossom. If this kid is good enough for Hoke, he should be good enough for all of us.

Alright, I'll get off my soapbox now.

determined to be down on our recent recruits. Look, I'm sure given the opportunity, everyone would like to land the top 20 recruits in the nation and call it a day. Real life isn't like that, and we have seen enough 3 stars blow up and enough 5 stars blow out that we have reason to think they might have the potential to be very good, but it's so hard to predict anything before anyone even sets foot on campus. Just chill, and realize that the important thing is filling up the class with people the coaches determine to be talented and good fits for the program (and, perhaps more cynically, are actually, you know, attainable.)

Generally 5 stars are going to have a floor of at least an average CFB.  They are a limited pool of 30-40 kids a year.  It doesnt mean anything for their ceiling.  So I disagree with your comment about them busting at often as 3 stars excel.  There are hundreds of 3 stars, only a small slice will blossom into studs.

That said, IMO you can throw all the 3-4 stars together in a bucket and shake it and it's really irrelevent.  The floors and ceilings are vast.  Some kids mature early and dominate and never get to the next level, other kids develop far more in their college years etc.

These kids are Juniors in High School.  3-Star is the recrutitng services' way of saying "TBD".

3-Star + coaches' evaluation after seeing them in person at an actual camp = 4-Star.

This is what, five commits since the end of last week?  It's not quite 8-in-two-days, but I think this weekend definitely deserves recognition as a mini-committapalooza.

24/7 indicates that he camped at OSU on June 21 - looks to me like he was hoping to receive an OSU offer as a result and then decide between OSU and UM. When the OSU offer didn't materialize, he jumped on the UM offer. Can't blame a guy for scoping out his options. Welcome aboard!
