Heisman studs: Gerhart, Spiller, Ingram, Suh

Submitted by Topher on
Those four guys are the best spotlight players in the country this year. After last night's results, I believe that any more than a few token votes for Tebow or McCoy are evidence of a broken Heisman system. Toby Gerhart didn't play this week, but in four killer games down the stretch he ran over, around and through the opposition for something like 800 yards and at least ten touchdowns. He is a favorite among "cultural conservatives" of college football because he also plays baseball and is going to graduate early with a legitimate degree (from Stanford of all places.) His team has four losses, but so did Tebow's when he won it and TG has carried his team to its first bowl game in nine years. Ingram was pretty good against a good Florida defense - I don't think good enough to go from forgotten to a winner but enough to get in the conversation. He plays hard when he's healthy. (His Gator chomp taunt was not a good move in my opinion and tarnished his image.) I had thought CJ Spiller was overrated, but I have changed my mind - he was spectacular against Georgia Tech, keeping Clemson in it for 60 minutes and rushing for over 100 yards in EACH half of the game. He has great power and also great direction-changing ability. Colt McCoy has been a media favorite mostly because he didn't get it last year, but this season's campaign is not as impressive. McCoy was nowhere near the best player on the field last night, let alone the country. He's been up against a ridiculously weak schedule this season and the two good defenses they played (OU and Nebraska) made him look silly. Texas scored 29 points combined against those two teams. It's easy to look good running up the score against Oklahoma State (who got blasted by OU last week) and Texas A&M; it's another matter against strong, competent defensive squads. Tebow has been above average this year but not spectacular, he looks less productive without studs like Percy Harvin around him and his stock had been helped by being undefeated, which is over - and that 12-0 record had been helped by some seriously bogus calls. Almost all non-Florida fans can agree that Tebow has been massively overexposed and excessively fellated. He already has a Heisman Trophy for a much better season two years ago. Does he really need votes for another one with all these more productive players around him.

They highlight Tebow and McCoy throughout and then the announcer asks "... or will an unsung dark horse (images of Gerhart pop up) surprise us all?" The media wants and demands a McCoy, Ingram or Tebow victory. Toby Gerhart? Is that, like, a character from the West Wing?

You could have chosen a better phrase than "cultural conservatives." Don't want to make his fans sound like bigoted racists or anything.

What I mean is people who criticize the "football factory" model of sub-NCAA qualifiers, bogus degrees and tolerated criminals. To them, Gerhart embodies every ideal of the student-athlete and of college sports.

Most of the votes were probably cast before this weekend anyways, which is too bad. Frankly, if you want to really do awards for the best player, QB, RB, etc--maybe wait until after the bowl game. Suh rocks, but he'll be lucky to get an invite. BTW, I was actually sick of hearing Musky and Herby slobbering all over him by halftime--despite his phenomenal performance.

1. Suh - Truly the most outstanding player in college football. There's not really a close second. 2. McCoy - Leader of undefeated team. Threw for 300+, rushed for 150+ against A & M in critical game down the stretch. Not stellar last night but that shouldn't diminish a very good season. 3. Ingram - Great numbers for the season. Great performance in critical game last night. 4. Spiller - I think that he's scored TD's via rushing, receiving, punt returns and kickoff returns. Great season for under the radar team. 5. Gerhart - I'll admit East Coast Bias on this one and haven't seen much of Stanford except for SportsCenter highlights. Great performances in clutch games. Tebow wouldn't be invited to NYC. I know that this is blasphemy in some circles but his performance wasn't one of the Top 5 in the country this year.

...until I got to your tag line. 3-9 happened last year; get over it. It is old news. And you obviously have accepted it, because you are still here. So, really, your very presence here disproves your supposition. And that tagline is just plain ugly. So, how many games does RR have to win next year before you let go of your grudge?

What does my tagline have to do with my post? Seriously? If the team got together this season and wore "3-9 Is Not Acceptable" t-shirts, you'd think that they're all heroes. All those people negging a non-beligerant tagline are complete morons but if that's all the further your thought process goes I really can't help you.

Based on an individual's performance (not team) over the current season only, then IMO: 1) Suh - he dominated last night like he dominated all season. 2) Gerhart - puts up his biggest numbers in the biggest games. Slight nod over Ingram based on lack of a good supporting cast to diminish defenses from keying on him. 3) Ingram - amazing running back. Damn, I wish he went to UM. 4) McCoy - very good season (though not as good as last year). He looked like a world beater against A&M, but sadly my Aggies tend to do that to the opposition. 5) Spiller - most dynamic player in college football. He's carried Clemson much of the season.

if TG doesn't get it brimstone will rain from the sky. i've got nothing against suh and think he deserves at least 3rd. i don't think anyone else has stepped up as much as Gerhart and taken his team on his shoulder against some very good competition. His best performances came against the best opponents like USC and Oregon.
