Haylie Wagner signs pro softball contract

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

While Sierra Romero is at the US Women's National Team camp for softball not even a week after her junior season came to a conclusion, Haylie Wagner, whose Michigan career ended last week has signed a pro contract.

Haylie will play for the Pennsylvania Rebellion of the NPF.

When the Rebellion play the USSSA Pride, we could see a pitching matchup of Haylie against her Michigan pitching predecessor--Jordan Taylor.

Great to hear that she's continuing on with softball.

Former @umichsoftball Left-hander Haylie Wagner will have a pro career playing for the PA Rebellion (NPF). Signed the contract yesterday.

Can't help but mention Luke Glendening's amazing journey from walk on to captain to ECHL to AHL to being a key player for the Detroit freaking Red Wings all season long and especially in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Yep, since 1997. They have a draft and everything where college seniors are drafted.

Romero will probably go #1 overall next year if she chooses to enter her name which I'm sure she will since she's obviously good enough for the USWNT since she's at the camp right now for the second straight year.

Could very well be an Olympian if (when) Softball is reinstated in 2020.

That's good to know.

I don't like what she did to Michigan, but you can not help but to be impressed by Florida's Lauren Haeger.  I thought it was a shame to see such a dominant athlete have nowhere to go to regularly compete after college, but I guess that's not true.

That is awesome news for her and wish her all the best as she had a great Michigan careers and was awesome in the post season!

A repost from earlier....

Re-did some lyrics in Haylie's honor:

"Stop Haylie time

Every time you see her that Haylie's just so hype

She’s dope on the mound and gets them out on strikes

Now why would she ever stop doing this

With opponents makin' outs they just don't hit

She has toured around the country from Wilpon to OKC

It's Haylie go Haylie

It's a Haylie yo Haylie and the Wolverines go and slay!"

I'm glad Wagner can continue to play the game she loves. We won't soon forget how instrumental she was in getting Michigan Softball to within one win of a National Championship.

Saw that. Keeping my fingers crossed that it happens. samdruss on here said it's all but official per parents/those close to the program.

That would be absolutely huge in so many ways that I can't describe. Two upperclassmen pitchers on staff along with basically a 5 star and top ranked pitcher in Blanco who really didn't get a chance to pitch much this season.

Oh yeah, and Michigan also brings in another Freshman arm next season.

Now take all that and add that to the entire batting lineup except Lauren Sweet returning but all are a year older and have National Championship Series experience.

Next year's team could be better than this year's team.

Good for her.  She had a winding road at Michigan, from freshman ace to injury-riddled sophomore to junior ace to senior 2nd pitcher, at then back to ace at the very end.  She worked hard through all of it, though, and represented Michigan in a great way.  Her tearful interview after the final Florida game said more than anything else about her love for the school & the team.  I'm glad to see that she'll have the chance to do some more great things in softball going forward.

On another note, I see Romero heading off the the national team camp - when is she going to rest that wonky elbow?! :)  The work these women put themselves through is just unbelievable.

news for her. I really wish professional softball would get more coverage. It's a good game unlike the WNBA. MLB should look into some sort of partnership/promotion.

Does anyone know why the Florida pitcher didn't get drafted until the fifth round (and wasn't the first pitcher chosen)? I thought she and Romero were the two players of the year.

You probably didn't get a multimillion dollar signing bonus, but you should have fun for a few years and build lifetime memories. Best of luck.

Good for Haylie, but it's hardly going to pay the bills.  I happened on a pro softball game last week on TV and did some reasearch as a result.  The only pro league is National Pro Fastpitch.  And from the FAQ, you can see player salaries:

www.profastpitch.com/about/faqs/

"Average NPF player salary is approximately $5,000-$6,000 for the playing season of June, July and August."

They *do* get housing paid for as well, but overall compensation is very low.
