Hawaii football changing name back to Rainbow Warriors

Submitted by Cold War on

Hell yeah they are!

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay has reversed field from a previous decision and all men’s athletic teams will be renamed the Rainbow Warriors. This decision comes just months after Jay decided all men’s sports would simply be named the Warriors. From 2000 to 2012, some teams were named the Warriors and others the Rainbow Warriors. This occurred after former UH football coach June Jones requested the football team be known strictly as the Warriors. Prior to 2000, the football team was known as the Rainbow Warriors.

Jay said continuity and a push to re-add the “Rainbow” portion of the name were the reasons behind the decision                                                        http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/05/15/hawaii-football-changing-name-back-to-rainbow-warriors/

Oh yes please USC.  Pretty pretty please.  We would probably win and I could rub that all over my brother-in-law's face.

It's like a can't lose for me.  He thinks that USC is like 10 levels above Michigan, and is arrogance is such that he wouldn't even rub it in if he won because he just thinks that's how it should go.  But when we likely win it would be such sweet victory.

college sports are known for having really unique nicknames and we just reclaimed another.

I mean really, just think about all the schools in the Big Ten alone that have mascots/nicknames that are totally unique amongst college and pro sports

Golden Gophers
Badgers
Hawkeyes
Cornhuskers
Illini
Hoosiers
Boilermakers
Wolverines
Buckeyes
Nittany Lions
Scarlet Knights
Terrapins
(i.e. all but NW and MSU)

Rainbow Warriors is a win in my book

it was a very unusual atmosphere to watch a game in Hawaii.  I remember hanging out on the beach that day and then heading to the game in my board shorts.  Back then they still had the rainbow on their helmets and I think it always made it harder to take them seriously.

I would love to see them sport a cool helmet with the oil-slick, color changing style rainbow laid into the clear coat. Tell me that wouldn't look awesome.
