Hawaii coach apologizes for Michigan scrimmage tape joke

Submitted by Brian Griese on

"I was actually just joking it'd be fair if they just sent us a practice film or scrimmage film, that'd be fair. But it kind of blew up from there. There was never any real interaction or discussion of this. We're on a 10-hour plane. It all happened when we're on a 10-hour plane and took off from there."

He later laughed and said, "I apologize."

Absolutely. Every scheme would have to adjust constantly.

They could afford to blitz entirely differently, or rush different linebackers, or have more d-line pressure, and our QB's pocket would fold more often, or the RB would have nowhere to go.

The *best case* scenario is a spare safety doing double coverage on a WR and the rest of the play was a ground play. But the smart move defensively is to always rush more linemen/linebackers.

Offensively? Same concept applies. That's one more route to cover with one fewer person. That's one WR that is ALWAYS open. Or perhaps one more olineman pushing against us. Sacks become much harder. Holes for RBs get wider.

Yeah I mean you could play nickel while having your 4-3 base on the field. Rush your 4 lineman and a Linebacker up the middle on every play while having 7 guys back to cover receivers. That leaves you with 7 guarding 5 on every play, or 6 on 5 with a guy watching the QB.
Then on offense just split an extra guy wide on every play, forcing the defense to either play zone with not enough to cover or give up huge run lanes.

We live in the craziest stupidest world ever. Why would this guy completely make shit up? Unbelieveable. I'll take Michigan and the points now.

Re..lax. He made a joke about how his team already played a game and wouldn't it be fair if Michigan sent some scrimmage tape. Idiots in the media apparently made up that Harbaugh "refused" to send tape and other outlets went with it.

He apologized for his innocuous comment being taken seriously by the media (shocking I know).  It was a joke that he didn't foresee becoming a bit of a national story.  I listened to his interview with Kanell - he was gracious enough just to apologize that it became a story and not hammer some media members for their dumbassery.

Just for that "joke," Harbaugh will respond with his own "joke," namely, a 2-point conversion when we're up by 60 points already -- and THEN an onside kick immediately following that.

And after the game, Harbaugh will send him a videotape of those two plays.

I think it was a legit joke -- i.e., reporter asks coach if he's worried about being at a disadvantage because Michigan can study their game tape and they can't do the same for Michigan, coach laughs and says we asked them for a scrimmage tape but they wouldn't give us one! I didn't hear the original conversation, but if it went down that way he probably assumed the reporter would get the joke and would report it that way. If I'm right, then the reporter was the one who screwed this up -- either by not getting the joke or by getting it and deciding to stir up a controversy.

He was laughing about the entire thing and it seemed pretty obvious that it was a joke that the media ran with.

No, he never expected Michigan to give up the scrimmage footage.  He was actually pretty funny, very complimentary of Harbaugh and Michigan and seemed like a coach we'd all pull for in non-Michigan games similar to the way many like Pat Fitzgerald around these parts.

This is nice guy making a joke off the cuff.  He apologized for any confusion or if it somehow turned into a thing.

Nothing to see here folks.

I like this guy.  Smaller player who went from JuCo to Hawaii, put up massive numbers there.  Beyond that (which I found in a 2 second google search), I know nothing about him.  But I did watch the interview where he made this joke, and it was said in jest.  He also said he really likes Coach Harbaugh and said he was great for college football.  So yea, I like this guy.
