Hats off to MSU-Congrats

Submitted by HelloHeisman91 on

I have been through all of the Snowflake threads and decided this thread needed to be started.  Michigan was beat by a better team today...period.  Congrats to the Spartans and I can't wait to go at it again next year.

The fact that it still chafes them so badly and they continue to dwell on it even when they have the better team is what makes it so appropriate.  Their massive inferiority complex is a large part of what drives them, even at times when they are not inferior.  It is what it is, and that comment, although ill-timed is not what turned the tide in the rivalry.  Poor recruiting and huge and repeated changes in offensive and defensive coaching and schemes had a lot more to do with it.

With Notre Dame taking a sabbatical after next year, this becomes our second biggest game and at this rate we'll have worthy adversary.  Great defense and well coached.  If this team gets an offense they'll be outright scary.  Until next year.

MSU is going to take a step back next year. That's why they have placed so much emphasis on this year. They lose a ton of experience and talent.

MSU doesn't have much talent on offense and it isn't improving. They don't have any stud WR's or RBs. They have Terry, but who knows how good he is.  This is where their mediocre recruiting is going to start to hurt.

That's not really true.  Langford looks pretty damned good to me - he's fast and strong.  Burbridge is the real deal.  That Kings kid is good.  The Shelton kid is a true frosh I think.  They are VERY young on offense so guys will emerge.  They lost a TON the last two years and are starting to recover.  Was it Fred Smith that went to them?  He would be a senior this year I think.  I don't think a single WR other than Fowler is above RS Soph - same for their Tight Ends and RBs.  Coupled with the improvement Cook has shown since looking like a dumpster fire the first few weeks and I have no reason to believe they'll do anything but improve on O.

D is another story, but we've been saying they'll take a step back there for 3 years now too.  They just keep finding new guys to plug in.  Bullough did for Jones - that Ed Davis kid got to Devin a few times today and looks to be very good.  And don't they have like 2 or 3 other Bullough kids there or on the way?  I seem to remember Max saying his little brother was the best of them all.  That's kind of scary to imagine.  That kid is going to play on Sundays.

Don't know that I could bring myself to tip my hat, but today I feel like we were simply beaten by a better team, a sentiment I didn't feel after the PSU game.

I'm not going to lie, I came here expecting to see the worst of our fanbase, but was pleasantly surprised to see that we tipped our cap and took the loss like men.  It sucks, but this is what we are right now.  A good but not great team in any phase of the game, that lost to a team that absolutely dominates on defense.  I think the thing that worries me most is not how bad the coaching was - particularly after a bye week - but rather how complacent our fan base is now.  We just accept defeat and move on.  We're becoming a fan base full of handshakes and politeness.  No one fears us.  We're just that nice guy on the block whose wife is getting screwed by every fourth neighbor but we're too proud to admit it.  At this point, the best we can say is that at least we're not Purdue.  But way to be classy!

Complacent?? Where have you been?? This board has been on fire with panic and vitriol for the coaches and concerns in WINS and the other loss. Difference is those were against inferior teams and today we lost to a far better one.

What can we really do though? This is who we are right now unfortunately and we need to (again unfortunately) be patient for the talent to come in, mature, and get coached up.

What the hell is anyone supposed to do about it on the internet? We have no say in coaching hires, play calling, or anything else.
I consider myself a generally reasonable person with an irrational attachment to UM football, but seriously, what can I, or anyone on here, do? I decided today that if Borges and funk are back next year I'm not renewing my season tickets. Does it make a difference? Not really, but it's all I can do.

Congrats, Sparty.  I'm sure it makes it that much sweeter when I say that your team plays with the style that I hoped ours would have adopted by now.

Enjoy it!

But you can't keep Paul B. and Ann A. apart for long: they're DESTINED to be together!  :)

Congrats, whooped our butts in every facet of the game.  Michigan at this point is all talk about how they are going to change.  I'll be interested in when that change is going to actually happen.

Yep, I don't feel sick like I did after Penn State. This was a better team than us this year and we deserved to lose.

Hope we are much better than them next year.

They were the better team today.  I just hope that the players and the coaches remember this when Sparty comes back down to earth and our starting roster is not littered with freshmen and sophomores.  What comes around goes around.

Don't get me wrong.  I am still pissed about the lack of execution, particularly on offense, and I think that Borges has fully worn out his welcome.  At the same time, if you think that experience doesn't have an effect on success on the field then you are crazy.

  • LT: Sophomore
  • LG: Senior
  • C: 5th-year Senior
  • RG: 5th-year Senior
  • RT: Senior

Ten of eleven starters on offense are juniors or seniors; ten of eleven starters on defense are juniors or seniors.

Where do you people come up with this crap?

I'll give credit where credit is due. They kicked our asses today. They were more physical, and just better in every phase of the game. We can all talk about how it'll be so much easier next year because they lose a lot of guys to the draft, but Dantonio has shown that his defenses are not full of flukes and overachievers.

His offenses are nothing to brag about, but as long as they are at least mediocre and if his defenses maintain the status quo, they will be downright dangerous.

Pray Dantonio doesn't figure how how to recruit. If he does, we're in trouble.

ever again.  WE are the one's who are little brother the last five years.  They have the better program at this point.  They do more with less 4 and 5-star recruits and they produce the kind of defense we USED to have.

They played a tough, clean game and proved they are soooo much better than we are.

Congratulations Sparty on a great win for your program.  They were clearly the better team today and played the way I wish we would have.  A smothering defense is a difference maker.  Our defense is good but not on the same caliber.  Our offense has too many deficiencies to name and was no match for the Spartan D.  On the bright side, I think we can all agree we have a deep pool of young talented players, with more on the way.  Lets not take anything away from a great effort by MSU today.  These are kids doing their best and today the better team won.

back in Ohio's Cooper days, an SI writer did a piece on the Ohio/UM rivalry. We were dominating the recent games. He wrote that the problem with Ohio was that they were focused on hating UM and UM was focused on beating Ohio. I think there were some similarities to that and msu's attitiude toward UM but now it's gone beyond that. Msu still lives to hate us but they also focus on beating us. Lately it seems we're just focused on our historical dominance and our perceived vision of their inferiority to us. They are kicking our ass and its time we realized they aren't a doormat.

It has little to do with what is focused on.  UM focuses on history because for much of the past decade, save 2006 that is just about all we have to hang our hats on.  We have a bunch of 3-4 loss teams, mixed with RR debacle teams so what else is to dicuss but the glory of yesteryear.  The program has been mediocre by top end program comparisons for quite a while.

MSU hates us, and you see the passion in basketball and football.   The bball game last year you could see it in their bodies and mannerisms.  You see the same thing in EL in 2011 and 2013.  At that age being in your home stadium just flames it even more but it is difficult for us to understand as we have multiple rivals.  It is a lot like sports in other countries - many countries live only for soccer, they dont have football, baseball, basketball - soccer it is.  MSU does not have OSU, ND or anything else to worry about.  UM is their passion, and their bloodlust.  When they didnt match up in talent , they still kept most games close due to that.  Now they have more talent...and even if the talent was even that level of complete hatred and passion would be a big benefit.  UM is a long way away from having more talent and even further from having that passion.  Maybe getting beaten down for a decade will do it - MSU is on the way, 5 out of 6 and next year we bring an even younger OL into EL and I dont expect much different of an outcome.

MSU spends 364 days a year obsessing about us and preparing for this game. On MLive today, they sent trolls to our blog, even though they had their own.... showcasing their obsession, while we as Michigan fans prefer to blog with other M fans.   Not saying we should ever sink down to their level of fanbase but we do need to bring on the same level of intensity as we have towards OSU.  I remember when MSU was a weak opponent, they are not that team now.  They've always had crazy fan bases however.  Remember when they voted against us going to the Rose Bowl?

We can match their intensity, the coaching stuff, I don't have the knowledge to speak to.  I do have a perspective as a mom, though, and my heart goes out to Devin Gardner in a million ways for the strength and fortitude he displayed today.  So grateful he was not more seriously injured.

It's just amusing to me how they still are so worked up over the comments from a Michigan player who graduated six years ago and went 4-0 against them. He kind of has the right to talk shit.

One emotion from this game: DISGUST.

Congrats?

Oh my goodness, we must have some of the classiest fans in the world to take a rear-kicking like that and want to say "good beating, ol' chum!"

This obsession with class, LORD. How laughable.

Anger, disgust, despair, and then much much more disgust that we have lost again to those cretins from East Lansing.

The FREAKING ASCOTS IN THIS THREAD.

This was disgusting. No congrats. I hate Sparty. It's disgusting and pathetic that they are better than us. It is an ABOMINATION that they are THAT much better than us.

Fie on your awful thread and this cur's retreat to "class."

You jokers!  This shit-ass website is the only place where fans would fucking congratulate their most hated rival for beating them.  Grow some fucking balls!  Or would that negate everyone's pathetic fucking need to be PC?  You're all a bunch of bozos.  Get fucked!
