I haven't seen an update in the while, how is he doing? Great to have him on the team!
November 15th, 2013 at 12:10 PM ^
good end to a crappy week - go, Austin, go!
November 15th, 2013 at 12:14 PM ^
A nice bit of news in this blackhole of collective existential crisis.
Welcome aboard, Mr. Hatch!
November 15th, 2013 at 12:16 PM ^
For some reason, I didn't realize he survived 2 plane crashes, that is crazy. Glad to have him aboard.

I have been in a car accident yet I did not stop driving/riding in cars.
November 15th, 2013 at 12:40 PM ^
That seems like a pretty massive false equivalency.
November 15th, 2013 at 12:54 PM ^
depends how serious the car crash was. cant be too safe boys, keep your eyes on the road.

Using one is basically unavoidable, while the other has to be one of the most avoidable modes of transport there is (and one that has previously killed your mother).
November 15th, 2013 at 1:13 PM ^
his own plane and was flying the family on vacation, it might not have been all that avoidable for Austin.
November 15th, 2013 at 1:17 PM ^
I'm not criticizing Austin, I was responding to the the poster who said:
I have been in a car accident yet I did not stop driving/riding in cars.
As if being in a plane crash and getting back in a tiny plane is somehow equivalent to driving after getting in a car accident.
November 15th, 2013 at 1:48 PM ^
Just for fun, doesn't the end result satisfy the original argument, assuming levels of pain/duration of pain are near equivalent?
Death from A=Death from B
Therefore if the author didn't stop doing A after risk of death doing A, why would he stop doing B after risk of death doing B?
November 15th, 2013 at 1:59 PM ^
EDIT: I actually don't really care.

Really only speculation at this point, but plane crashes are very rare. Obviously different in the case of smaller, private planes. Who knows honestly?
November 15th, 2013 at 7:52 PM ^
to the vacation spot would probabably have been just as dangerous if not more so than flying there in a small plane.

I haven't seen anything really solid - maybe I've missed it. It seems like we would have heard if he was back to full-strength, though.
My impression is that he's doing quite well from a normal human (i.e., not D-I basketball player) perspective.
It will, of course, be great to have him in the fold either way.

This is the Michigan Difference...

John Beilein is a great man. I'm not sure other schools would have honored his schollarship. The last update I heard is that Hatch would not be playing basketball. I hope that's wrong...
November 15th, 2013 at 1:18 PM ^
from Michigan and let's say Indiana or Kentucky, if they compare the coaches that they will be playing for and the kind of men that they are. Seems like it would be a big deal for the parents. I know it would be for me.

Medical if I recall correctly. Mad props to Hatch!
November 15th, 2013 at 12:55 PM ^
Hatch, Beilein, and Michigan are all winners today.
Go Blue.
November 15th, 2013 at 1:04 PM ^
anyone deserves a full ride to Michigan more - whether he plays or not.
November 15th, 2013 at 1:04 PM ^
This is awesome... Room always gets a little dusty when reading stuff about this kid.
There's no way this kid doesn't find great success, whatever that may be.
November 15th, 2013 at 1:30 PM ^
I remember when it was looking like he wouldnt be able to join the team as a player. This is huge. Good for him.
November 15th, 2013 at 1:47 PM ^
Hatch's journey has been long, hard and remarkable and this represents yet another chapter. I hope to be there when he steps on the court at Crisler for the first time so I can join in what will hopefully be thunderous applause. Welcome to Michigan, Austin Hatch!

Well deserved. I hope he is able to get back into playing shape again. Last I heard he was shooting around, but not participating in full contact games. Has anyone heard updates beyond that?
November 15th, 2013 at 2:09 PM ^
I don't give a fuck how many national and/or big ten championships we could possibly lose out on by giving Austin a scholarship (assuming he can't play at a high level any longer).
I will take THAT Michigan over anything else.
That is MY Michigan. We take care of our own. We love to win, but winning isn't everything.
MICHIGAN is everything, not winning. We win the way Michigan wins, and we lose the way Michigan loses. The state of college football/basketball/whatever doesn't change that.
Michigan is what it is. People can mock me for that sentiment, or say I'm naieve because of it, and that's fine. I accept that, but it is what it is, IMO.
Michigan is Michigan and that extends beyond winning.
November 15th, 2013 at 2:25 PM ^
I bet that his mere presence will help the team when it faces what gets called "adversity." He can remind everyone that a "hostile crowd" or whatever is nothing.
With that said, how great would it be to see this kid play and play well?
November 15th, 2013 at 2:27 PM ^
I agree with the general sentiment wholeheartedly, and Michigan is a special place of which we are rightfully proud - current football travails notwithstanding. But let's be careful about implying that we're the only school that would do the right thing here and honor the scholarship. I'm sure that not every school would, but I suspect there are plenty of other upright programs out there that would honor the scholarship in these circumstances.
Reminds me of the Thoreau quote:
"A man is not a good man to me because he will feed me if I should be starving, or warm me if I should be freezing, or pull me out of a ditch if I should ever fall into one. I can find you a Newfoundland dog that will do as much."

Austin Hatch will play high school basketball this season. Here's what John Beilein had to say about him today: http://t.co/VkKYAMDeOS
— Joe Stapleton (@joe_stapes) November 16, 2013
Yes,” Beilein responded when asked if Hatch would play this season. “Obviously that’s up to his high school and his coach and things like that, but that is the plan right now.”
. . .
On Friday, Beilein talked about the class and specifically addressed the situation with Hatch. Because of the seriousness of Hatch’s injuries, his ability to play basketball at the college level remains in doubt. But Beilein said Hatch’s scholarship is not at stake.
“It’s as exciting as can be that he’s going to have this opportunity to play organized basketball again,” Beilein said. “We just have to see how that all develops. The big thing is that he has a scholarship to the University of Michigan, and I want to make sure he knows that. We want to make sure he knows that.”

Whatever happens, best of luck to the kid.
Had Stauskas-level potential pre-injury but just being able to walk is a blessing, frankly

nice perspective for those of us a little gloomy about stuff that doesnt matter at all.
very glad to see this milestone for him. hopefully he enjoys it.

Hope he gets to cut down some nets.
