Just for fun, doesn't the end result satisfy the original argument, assuming levels of pain/duration of pain are near equivalent?

Death from A=Death from B

Therefore if the author didn't stop doing A after risk of death doing A, why would he stop doing B after risk of death doing B?

The past 2 weeks have made it seem like Michigan has the whiniest, wonkiest, most argumentative group of fans/ alum I'd imagine of any school out there. People who will log on to message boards to parse every other post for logical, syntactic, grammatical, or shortage- of-proper loyalty/ support/ skepticism just to have someone to argue with. But this thread of whether Austin Hatch should or should not have gotten into the plane with his family, and whether it is or is not like getting into a car, is positively the lowest point this misbegotten bunch of self-important low-class snobs has reached yet! But I'm sure we can get lower...

I haven't seen anything really solid - maybe I've missed it.  It seems like we would have heard if he was back to full-strength, though.

My impression is that he's doing quite well from a normal human (i.e., not D-I basketball player) perspective.

It will, of course, be great to have him in the fold either way.

that puts recent Michigan news in perspective. Some things are more important than wins or losses. I don't know whether he'll be able to play meaningful minutes on the court. Beilein's comments are encouraging. But it doesn't really matter. What matters is Michigan's integrity in honoring his scholarship and giving him a chance to pursue his dreams. I'll be rooting for him even if he doesn't play one minute of Michigan basketball.

John Beilein is a great man. I'm not sure other schools would have honored his schollarship. The last update I heard is that Hatch would not be playing basketball. I hope that's wrong...

Hatch's journey has been long, hard and remarkable and this represents yet another chapter. I hope to be there when he steps on the court at Crisler for the first time so I can join in what will hopefully be thunderous applause. Welcome to Michigan, Austin Hatch!

Well deserved.  I hope he is able to get back into playing shape again.  Last I heard he was shooting around, but not participating in full contact games.  Has anyone heard updates beyond that?

I don't give a fuck how many national and/or big ten championships we could possibly lose out on by giving Austin a scholarship (assuming he can't play at a high level any longer).

I will take THAT Michigan over anything else.

That is MY Michigan. We take care of our own. We love to win, but winning isn't everything.

MICHIGAN is everything, not winning. We win the way Michigan wins, and we lose the way Michigan loses. The state of college football/basketball/whatever doesn't change that.

Michigan is what it is. People can mock me for that sentiment, or say I'm naieve because of it, and that's fine. I accept that, but it is what it is, IMO.

Michigan is Michigan and that extends beyond winning.

I agree with the general sentiment wholeheartedly, and Michigan is a special place of which we are rightfully proud - current football travails notwithstanding.  But let's be careful about implying that we're the only school that would do the right thing here and honor the scholarship.  I'm sure that not every school would, but I suspect there are plenty of other upright programs out there that would honor the scholarship in these circumstances.

Reminds me of the Thoreau quote:

"A man is not a good man to me because he will feed me if I should be starving, or warm me if I should be freezing, or pull me out of a ditch if I should ever fall into one. I can find you a Newfoundland dog that will do as much."

Yes,” Beilein responded when asked if Hatch would play this season. “Obviously that’s up to his high school and his coach and things like that, but that is the plan right now.”

. . .

On Friday, Beilein talked about the class and specifically addressed the situation with Hatch. Because of the seriousness of Hatch’s injuries, his ability to play basketball at the college level remains in doubt. But Beilein said Hatch’s scholarship is not at stake.

“It’s as exciting as can be that he’s going to have this opportunity to play organized basketball again,” Beilein said. “We just have to see how that all develops. The big thing is that he has a scholarship to the University of Michigan, and I want to make sure he knows that. We want to make sure he knows that.”

the UM administration for this stance. Maybe it's a hollow moment, but this loyalty is rare in D1 and it should remind us that UM stands for more than simply Ws. Winning is important, winning with integrity is more important.
