Same.  I read the first few in middle school and just kinda said fuck it after that.  I used to rag on people over 18 and such who read it and made a big deal about movies but then I realized I obsessively follow the college choices of 16-18 year old boys so I stopped (just a bit).

Chill. No need to insult a fellow mgoblogger for his choice to see the movie tonight. He asked a question with a slant of humor in it.

Relax, you and your "manliness" can see it or not whenever you want.

I was a bit bored at work today, so I spent a portion of the day coming up with titles for the new Harry Potter series. Some examples:

Harry Potter and the Creepy Adults Dressed like Kids

Harry Potter and the Lonely Nerds Waiting in Line

Harry Potter and the Justification of Owning 12 Cats

Harry Potter and the Endless Virginity

Harry Potter and the Battle Against Alcoholism

Feel free to join in with your best titles!

to quote LaMarr Woodley from his facebook page:

Why do people make such a big deal about harry potter??

I expect people from state to read at a middle school level but we should hold ourselves to a higher standard of literary maturity

I feel like cartman in the return of the fellowship of the ring to the two towers episode when they came across the "nerdy" kids playing harry potter. even nerds ridicule Harry potter

i am willing to bet Deathly Hallows part 2 is going to kick the crap out of any box office figures for LOTR, even you account for inflation.

This is my opinion of LOTR

But I might take that bet. The 3rd LotR movie is #13 domestic ($377m), #3 worldwide ($1,119m), adjusted domestic #51 ($483m). The highest Potter is actually the first one, #28 domestic ($317m), #9 worldwide ($974m), adj #67 ($439m). Take out the 3-D extra dollars, and add in the middle of summer competition, and the trend says no. But being the last one, there's a chance.

But it'll be interesting to see how HPatDH P2 does opening weekend. People have been waiting for this movie for a year and it's the last movie. Part 1 did $125 million in the box office.  I think this one will top that. The bigger question is whether it will top $150 million, which only The Dark Knight and Spiderman 3 have done. I don't think it will go quite as high, but I think it will be higher than Part 1. Many people might have been skeptical about seeing Part 1 because of the two parts and the fact that the second was being released a year later.

The movie will do well. A lot of kids my age and younger grew up on these books and this movie marks the end of an era. It probably deserves the attention it's getting, but it's not going to be the best movie of the summer.

It destroyed at the box office:

As a Warner Bros exec tells me, "Unbelievable night!" Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 flew to $92.1M in the U.S. and Canada today (including that record-setting $43.5M from midnight showings). That crushes the record for best single-day box office. As for the weekend, "almost impossible to say how big other than the biggest ever," gushed a rival studio exec.

Very impressive but not surprising.

From my friend's last check (I have a friend who is a movie critic in Detroit), basically almost every theater in suburban detroit was sold out last night. I was at the Rave theather (aka Showcase cinemas) and all 18 theaters was sold out (including the imax). The only open show was a 3 am imax. Judging by the buzz after the movie, there is going to be a fair amount of double and triple views. I am fairly confident that Deathly Hallows is going to be the top grossing movie this summer and will be surpassed next year with the Avengers.  Even looking at the Rotten Tomatoes score, it is above the Dark Knight on the tomatoemater at 97%.

I have a feeling Capt. America is going to bomb, which kills me because capt america is one of my favorite marvel series.

Are always tight fits. It'll be repeat viewings that take it over the top. I'd worry about the Transformer $$$ for the summer. But other than that, no competition with the first Pixar stumble. I think you're right about Cap. It actually looks pretty good, but I'm still not sold on Chris Evans. Particularly when he's supposed to be ordering around everyone in the Avengers. (The Red Skull was great casting though). I'd look at the 3rd Batman film to be the next potential big time recordbreaker, on anticipation. We'll see if it can sustain without the Joker.

Completely, agree. The thing that worries me about the 3rd batman movie is the anticipation. Since the Dark Knight was such a great movie, we are building it up to be the greatest super hero movie ever made. If it is half as good as the dark knight I will be happy.

Looking back from last night, there are some issues I have with movie if you consider it stand alone. However, I consider as a single movie with part 1. There is some important character development stuff left out about Dumbledore. If they put it, he wouldn't come off as a major douche. With that said, Snape's character development through out the 7 books was great.

Psh, midnight. I saw it at 7:30 last night in Novi (we were doing a benefit for W.Bloomfield schools).

I'm a sucker for fantasy. HP is no Lord of the Rings but I thoroughly enjoyed this last film.
