I visited the Tom Harmon exhibit at the Bentley Historical Library today. It was a bit smaller than I had hoped but well worth the trip.
Make sure you read the old-timey newspaper articles about Tom Harmon. There is a scrapbook by Bill Koontz (in the display as you walk in) that has dozens of the articles. The article about Tom Harmon's 168 yard single running play is spectacular.
Here is a recap of one of the articles:
Seems Michigan had there very own clock fiasco at Franklin Field (Philadelphia) against Penn in 1939. Penn scored to get within 2 at 19-17 with 38 seconds left and then recovered the onside kick. Penn tried to call a time out (apparently the clock did not stop with change of possession) but was not granted one. The clock continued to run as the Penn coaches argued with the refs and finally ran out. Fans rushed the field and the refs had to be escorted out by the police.
