#HarbaughEffect: #1 Player in California to visit 3/13

Submitted by Bodogblog on

5* LB Caleb Kelly to take an unofficial visit March 13th.  He is 100% crystal ball'd to Oklahoma, but they have a serious lack of Harbaugh.  Like they don't even have one Harbaugh.

This per Steve Lorenz twitter per Steve Wiltfong twitter, the latter of which also says California 4* QB KJ Costello may visit Michigan this week.  Very high on USC, Stanford, and Michigan.  An ominous "decision could come at any time" is included.  Though he's visited Ann Arbor before, so he could in fact be leaning to Michigan.  Perhaps visit Michigan + decision at any time means good things?

It may be wrong of me to feel this way, but I'm very confident we get Costello. With Costello, Crawford might follow. Defensively, the trio of Durkin/Jackson/Mattison is going to have a huge, huge effect on top players want to hear from Michigan. Why wouldn't they? That's an all-star line up in the coaching staff. And then you add some Harbaugh seasoning, pffffffffff, game over. 2016 is ours. Go blue

There seems to be a lot of eggs being placed in the Cali recruits basket. See if it pays off or get burned due to distance. UM has always been able to lure more players from CA than OSU but it's not that many per class.

You can't live off Cali recruits. These 5 star Cali guys won't be coming to Michigan in droves. An occasional one will take the plunge, but realistically, not many.
Various reasons......too far, family can't watch them, too cold, not enough hot girls, friends still in California, ect.

The base still has to come from the Midwest, with bits and pieces warm weather states.

I agree 100% with this statement. If we an win Michigan, do well in ohio, and hold down two more territories in the Midwest and now East Coast. (Places like NJ, Virginia, etc) then Michigan can occasionally cherry pick 1-2 guys from a Cali, Texas or Florida.

Even in our best years I don't see use getting more than 3 guys from Cali jut because of the staunch differences previously listed. Michigan used to be able to do this more in the 90's, but those days are gone. The economy, weather and overall lack of appeal to someone from the west coast today makes it a much more difficult sell.

We can be successful with that mentality. Win the Midwest and pick from the rest.

Michigan didn't seem to be the frontrunner in the article to be honest. Just the vibe of the article suggests he's taking the visit but not going there to commit. Who knows...

is where Harbaugh graduated HS and of course he also was a high profile football coach for the 49ers so it's really not all that surprising that he will attract kids from California to Michigan now.  If M starts churning out pro prospect QBs you will see them line up to play for the maize and blue.

Well I just wrote a great and long piece about how we'll be able to recruit in Cali and nationally. When I went to post it there was a website error and it's all erased so you'll just have to take my word for it until I get the inclination to rewrite it all, but we'll kick some ass out there if we focus on it as it seems we want to. We're gonna land some California gold and it's gonna look like maize to me!
