Harbaugh wanted Viramontes to play QB

Submitted by Wee-Bey Brice on

247's Clint Brewster reporting the exact opposite of what we've all heard/assumed, Jim Harbaugh had every intention of Vic Viramontes starting out at QB when he got to Michigan. Looks like he fell victim to some negative recruiting:

"We have been told that Viramontes was given bad information from a member of his camp that Michigan wouldn’t give him a shot at quarterback and he would immediately be a fullback or linebacker, which is completely false. Jim Harbaugh see's Viramontes as a high ceiling prospect at quarterback that has a lot of similar qualities to Colin Kaepernick."
Michigan staff is actively trying to get him back on board.

It did seem odd to me that Harbaugh and co wouldn't even give him a chance to play QB. They're all about competition and proving yourself. Vic would probably redshirt anyway so if it was clear in camp that Vic wasn't going to be a QB he would then be asked to switch positions. But I find it very hard to believe the staff wouldn't even give him a chance.

The Times and the  WSJ and the Orange County Register all have a stake in their reputation and th  news portion of their content is generally pretty solid.  The same can't be said about Redstate or Hufpost.  This doesn't even begin to address the massively shrinking foreign bureaus.  We need more and better information.  We get declining and less accurate content.

You're partly correct. We definitely need more, and better information. I am not at all convinced that conventional media is the way to get that. Actually, I'm fairly certain that it is not. They have (mostly) all been pushing their own (and others) agenda's forever. They deserve to die. The internet revolution has exposed them for what they are. We'll find a better way to get the info out there.

People are now relying on Facebook posts, tweets, email chains, and memes to get their information.  People read something on a meme and then two days later start quoting it as fact.  This is not a good development.  Quite the contrary.  At least when newspapers/news outlets push agendas, they can still be found liable for libel or slander, thereby mitigating the amount of misinformation that is propagated.   The main point of freedom of press is to have an informed citizenry.  Today's developments in the sharing of "information" have led to a misinformed citizenry, which I think is detrimental to society.

Given Harbaugh's history of trying players out at any and every position, I don't see why anyone would assume he would be assigned a position right away with no chance to move.

As much as I am hyped about Peters, I think in the long run Harbaugh will be looking for someone more mobile (in general). Of course if a guy like Peters is available you take him but I think we haven't seen the end of mobile QBs at Michigan.

Harbaugh has offered more mobile quarterbacks than Peters, but they still have to be able to pass the ball well. It's tough to find those guys. Personally, I think the toughest offenses to defend are the teams that run a lot of pistol, which can attack downhill with I-formation stuff but also run spread principles with the zone reads and such. Harbaugh ran a lot of that at SF and saw how well it can work. Anyway, I think Peters is mobile enough to run a lot of that stuff, but he's not a guy I would want to run much on power reads; he's more of a guy who can roll out and just keep defenses honest on zone reads.
