Harbaugh turns us down?

Submitted by beastcoastinc on

Just got a text that Harbaugh said he wasn't going to Michigan.  He will stay at STanford if he decides to stay in college, but otherwise is going to the NFL.  Has anyone else heard this?

people need to think logically about this. the most brandon has said was today at the conference, and as far as i can tell harbaugh has been even quieter.

john harbaugh has been speculating, but has he really talked to jim about michigan vs 49ers? and its cool that john can just tell whoever stuff jim is saying absolutely nothing to anyone else about? i dont think so.

my guess is 99.99999999999% of what we hear is just guesses reverberating off each other.

if you guess harbaugh wont come, youre just guessing. but if i quote you as saying he wont come, i can list you as my source.

if harbaugh said "i'd coach there for free", like hoke, it wouldnt have to be this way. but since he's the hot name looking for big money, it probably couldnt be any other way.

if brandon really had been sitting on his hands for the last month he deserves to join rodriguez. but i dont think that is at all what he's been doing.

What I want to know is: what will all the DB bandwaggoners do if Hoke is hired?  Those people were ready to turn this country into a monarchy and crown DB king, and for what?  DB had not and has not done shit.  And if the rumors about Hoke being the next coach prove true, all DB actually will have done is take a shit on this great university.

If the next coach is Brady Hoke, giving him a chance is indeed a crazy idea.

Let me be clear: I don't subscribe to the lunatic notion that ZOMG Saban is going to spurn Alabama to come to Ann Arbor where he will donate the fortune he has amassed to increase the school's endowment three-fold.  No, that will not happen.  I fully realize that Michigan is not every coach's dream job.  There are more than a few coaches who wouldn't take the helm at the Big House for all the sushi in Tokyo.

That being said, Brady Hoke is not the answer.  Brady Hoke is not the best coach Michigan could get.  He's not even close to the best coach Michigan could get.  Michigan can't afford to take a chance on an unproven coach--it would be too big a risk--but it can more than afford to pay a proven one.  DB said today that Michigan should be paying top-tier dollars; if he's going to do that, he better bring in top-tier coaching talent.

There are a lot of people in the football world who genuinely think Brady Hoke is an excellent coach.  That's not to say he's my top choice, but he's a guy who could turn out to be good.  IF he turns out to be the guy, give him a chance.  Two years ago, Auburn fans were beside themselves when Chizik was hired.

Is Hoke my first choice? to be honest, I have not paid attention to his career track? I really dont think he (from what little I know of him) will be able to recruit against MSU, OSU or ND...well...maybe ND.

From My view, it looks like DB did not have a back up plan. But then again, just because it has not been revealed to me does not mean he does not have one.

Harbaugh seems to be all about the money, a self-promoter and a bit of a diva.  I'd be thrilled if he was coach, but at the same time, it isn't the end of the world if he is not.

The 49ers apparently offered him a 5 year, $5 million/year contract.  The Miami Dolphins apparently are offering $8 million/year.

Michigan might almost be able to compete with the 49ers, but I doubt they could top the $8 million a year that the Dolphins allegedly are offering (and FWIW, if Harbaugh is contracted by the Dolphins, he will be the highest paid NFL coach).

these numbers are all rumored, but i heard harbaugh wanted 7 million from 49ers, and that dolphins offered 7 million to gruden. i guess you could assume they would offer harbaugh the same or even the 8 million you mentioned.

if 49ers really only offered him 5 per, i think michigan's hopes would be alive. all in, we paid RR an average of 4.17 per year. i think we could come up with an offer very competitive to 5/25, maybe something like 7/30.

its all just pure conjecture, but i think all we can do is hope our offer is comparable to what the nfl, and harbaugh decides that being equal he'd just as soon coach in ann arbor.

ESPN reported that Rodriguez made around $10 million from the university for his 3 years here, which comes out to around $3.33 million per year.

This doesn't include the buyout, but then again, it shouldn't.

Edit: The 49ers are allegedly offering Harbaugh $4.5 million per year, a number Michigan could certainly top.  Same source says Dolphins are offering between $7 and $8 million per year, and to make JH the "highest paid coach in the league."

How have college coaches to the NFL done in recent years?

Steve Spurrier?  Nick Saban?  Al Groh?  June Jones?

Harbaugh could get his $7-$8M a year for 3 or 4 years, and then he's back where he started, and the Michigan job will no longer be an option for him.  He could come here and stay for as long as he likes if he's able to find success.

In the pros, he'll always be on a short leash to be fired.

Just announced that A Luck is returning for his senior year @ Stanford... possibility of him staying means JH will remain as well??!??!?

as of a couple hours ago, dan lebatard was reporting harbaugh to the dolphins was all but a done deal. as of an hour ago, that is no longer true.

right now, the top 3 favorites (us, san francisco, and miami) are probably all thinking they've struck out on him. stanford is obviously still in play as well, but the above tells me that our chances are atleast just a little more alive than is conventional wisdom.

harbaugh's in a position to call the shots. he's listened to the offers, now he can decide. i wont be surprised if he picks any one of those four destinations.

JH doesn't look like he's going to Miami now.

Chris Mortensen

LATEST ESPN UPDATE: After meeting w Harbaugh, source says Dolphins have decided that Tony Sparano is the best man for job. Will be retained.

Adam Schefter

So after looking like Michigan, then SF, then Miami, it looks like it might finish right back where it started. At Stanford. Amazing.

mortensen is saying "it looks like he's staying at stanford". but what does "looks like" mean?

its my fault for sleuthing so much, but modern journalism is awful.

whitlock says it looks like harbaugh is taking a 6 figure deal to coach at ball state. seems just as reasonable.

coaching luck one more year makes sense, but missing out at michigan, seemingly the most logical nfl spot (49ers), and a godfather offer from miami does not. hard to imagine harbaugh's stock being any higher. sticking around stanford for just one more year seems to be the dumbest of all possible choices he could make.
