Harbaugh "rooting for Ohio State" in National Championship game

Submitted by Shaun on

Eisen asks Harbaugh if he should root for B1G/Ohio State on Monday: "I'm going to be rooting for Ohio State," Harbaugh says

Harbaugh says for Big Ten football, midwest football, "I think it's just fabulous a team in our conference is playing in that game."

I think one thing to keep in perspective is that Coach is always thinking strategy and what best to say. So whether or not he believes in rooting for osu, he believes that he said the right thing, and that was sticking up for the conference. It has nothign to do with cheering on the nuts down South.

Maybe he sees that has a way to draw in more recruits from the midwest if he preaches some B1G love? Some others have pointed it out. I don't see short term results from that one, but I understand that if the B1G gets more exposure and championships and prestige, we can then finally start chopping away at the SEC.

I don't know his intentions, but I think on a national radio/tv show he said that on purpose. I bet on Monday night he won't even be watching it. He'll be busy prepping winter conditioning schedules. When he does watch the game he'll probably not be rooting for osu  and will laugh at any mistakes and do the same things that the rest of us do when we watch the game.

Also Harbaugh seems to love challenges, he keeps using that word a lot.

If I were a coach, I'd be B1G centric. I'd always root for the conference publicly. However, I'm just a fan. I don't have to tow the party line. I hope the Ducks beat OSU by 50.

I am not convinced Harbaugh feels that way. His saying that is equivocal, because saying the opposite would be bulletin-board-stupid.

I'm glad OSU made it to the playoff, though, as I don't doubt that it will provide extra motivation to these coaches as they start this era.

Harbaugh has to say this to keep things civil. As for me I really don't see how them winning is going to magically give us 4 and 5 star recruits. As for us being little brother by rooting against them I've never rooted for them in the 70s till now.

It does make much more sense as a coach... Going into the bowls and playoff selection, the Big Ten was perceived week while the SEC West was considered the best conference all on its own... This almost resulted in multiple SEC West schools being in the top 4 and OSU being bypassed as a Big Ten conference champ for TCU and Baylor who didn't clearly win theirs.

With an OSU win, it will go even further to restoring the Big Ten as a top 2, if not top conference... Making the future Big Ten champ a lock or heavy favorite for one of the 4 spots, even with similar résumés to other conference champs.

It's certainly very logical and political, as well as good for recruiting (negative recruiting has to be an awful and less affective strategy.)... That said, I'm just a fan that hates having to hear nonsense from other fans without reason, logic or statistics being applied... So still, Go Ducks n Fuck Bucks. ;-)

Its always better when your rivals are good....sweeter to beat them..  If you cant beat them, thats your problem and you had better fix it (aka Harbaugh)

Always root for Big Ten previously in Rose Bowl games and this year the NC game.

I just can't see how it is more beneficial for Michigan if the Pac 12 wins the NC Game.

Harbaugh is the head coach of michigan which means he is smarter than anyone on this board.

That said, Ohio st has done their job in my mind and defeated Alabama. My opinion now, I hope they lose by 30.

instead of a runner up.  Good for the BigTen too.

But I'll be strongly pulling for the Ducks.  My wife is an Oregon fan which is a bonus.  I want to see another Urbz pizza pic after the game.

Clearly this Harbaugh guy we hired just doesn't understand the rivalry.  When will this athletic department realize that we need a coach who understands the rivalry?

I really got into rooting for them vs Bama. That was just a beautiful thing to see. Plus the OSU bros at the bar were generous with the drinks after joined in an OH-IO chant.

That being said. I'd never do it again.

The only way that Ohio winning helps us is if it improves our recruiting to top 3 consistently. We already had one class in the top 5 and one ranked 6th under Hoke and with the majority of our recruits coming from Ohio I don't see how it's going to help if they win.

I tried rooting for Ohio State once in my life. It was the year Florida leaped us in the ratings and played Ohio State in the championship game. I started off by pulling for Ohio State because I felt like we got cheated, but I literally got sick to my stomach cheering for them. I still wasn't rooting for Florida though, so I honestly turned the game off in the 1st quarter. Needless to say I learned my lesson and I will never cheer for OSU again. Go Ducks!!!

OSU winning might help the conference overall.  So?

All i care about is, does it help Michigan more than it helps OSU? And the answer is no.

Go Ducks.

JH is a coach in the B1G...what coach in the B1G would say anything negative about the conference?  He may be lieve what he's saying but what else could he possibly say?

Eff those guys down south.

If they do witn the NC then beating their asses in November will be that much sweeter.

Back when I was a kid, I wanted the Buckeyes to lose every single game.

Then, a very wise person set me straight.

What you should want is for the Buckeyes to win every game, so that they''re undefeated when the Wolverines kick their sorry @sses. Makes beating them all the sweeter.

I took that to heart.

I want all our opponents, including the Buckeyes,  to have the best possible record up until the day our guys play them.

Now, there are two ways to extend the logic of this argument.

One way to go is that you should want all of our opponents to win every game other than the game against us.

The other way to go is that you want them undefeated up to the point that they play us....and then f#ck 'em afterwards.

In this case, I'm going with F#ck the Bucks.

Go Ducks.

I loves me some Harbaugh, but a Sparty actually used this quote to talk trash today.

And dealing with those assholes from Ohio is fucking difficult enough.  They have more than enough to be pompous bastards without adding another goddamn national championship.

Harbaugh in all things.  Except this one.

Knowing Harbaugh's insanely competitive nature, I think he wants them to win the National Championship and go undefeated until November 28 so when he wipes the Big House floor with them it will elevate him even more into coaching greatness. Remember that he did something similar with a very good USC team under Pete Carroll.
It would also help with the B1G perception and possibly make more recruits take a second look at the B1G instead of the SEC and Pac 12.
It was a bad PR move though, he should've just kept quiet or said some coach speak fluff about how both teams are really good and he is just looking forward to watching some good football but at the end of the day he's focusing on Michigan football.
