Harbaugh Pistol Offense

Submitted by Tate on

So I found this last night on a deep plunge into the internet. I'm not sure if this is news to all, but it was certainly surprising to me.

Multiple practice reports have said that the Pistol is our primary formation on offense. So don't be surprised to see it extensively.

Sounds like the Pistol is our base offense even though we'll be multiple like we will be on defense.

I would be happy with that. Love the pistol set. Gives u the down hill benefits in the run game of being under center but gives the QB a lot more time to see the defense without him having to rush back in his drop as much

You're making baseless assumptions about why he might be doing this.

He has ties to the school. His two boys went there. He's probably been involved there for a long time. Maybe he prefers getting out and doing things to sitting at home?

Who knows? Not me and you. At 64, he probably also needs to kill some time to max out his retirement benefits. So what to do?

Also your assumptions about his job search, if he is actually doing one, are just stupid. The only thing holding him back is his age. He has a long resume with a lot of success, much of it not at Michigan. A younger Fred Jackson would easily move on to another good job.

Yes, my calc teacher is a wisconsin alum and a big sports fan, he has a pennant from every school I have ever heard of so it probably was santa clara. Many of them are from him visiting the schools and many of them are from students he's had bringing them back for him. I swear he said that thing about Smith and Green

It's not terribly surprising he would say that -- I'm sure there are a lot of "differences of opinion" among the coaches about who to recruit -- but it is surprising he would say that where it could be heard.

On the other hand, it's not at all surprising he would not be aware of the possibility that one of the kids sitting in his classroom staring at their phones might be photographing him and posting what he says, live on the Internet.

and FJ actually did in fact say that. It doesn't make sense as Smith was not a highly rated RB (3* on Rivals). It says he had an OSU offer, but other than that, his other offers are not impressive.

Also, Green was the #1 RB in the country his year and everybody wanted the kid (his offer sheet is amazing). Unless his stock fell rapidly and his offers quickly became "un-commitable" he would not have come to Michigan if he didn't feel really wanted.

I was just riffing off the "the pistol won't work in the B1G" comment, which seemed to be a conclusion without any support.  I meant it as good-natured ribbing of Anonymosity's post - not as football analysis.

FWIW, I think that the pistol could work here (or for any college team), and unless I'm misremembering it we've seen some pistol in recent seasons.  I'm not sure I'd want to see it as our base offense, but that's a personal preference rather than a solid football opinion (and it depends on who wins the QB derby).  The bottom line is I want to see more Ws, and trust this staff to find them for the team.

Shotgun, under center, pistol?  In Harbaugh I trust.

He needs to learn how to complete a forward pass first. He has enough trouble with that. He is the most mobile QB we have though. Perhaps Harbaugh can find something for him to do besides sending in the play call to Rudock and/or Malzone.
