Harbaugh: "No Debauchery!"

Submitted by Hugh White on

First: an obligatory "Bleacher Report" apology. However, this interview is just too good not to share. The interviewer has exclusive access to John Harbaugh, but clearly wishes he had gotten Jim because the best questions and answers focus on Ann Arbor.

Highlights:

* Dad once made the brothers dribble basketballs all the way from their home to his office, alternating hands along the way;

* Jim reciting Shakespeare;

* "No apologies in football" (I hearby retract my earlier BR Apology)

* "No Debauchery!" apparently includes late-night kissing rituals.

Good interview and John has a great mini-rant about satellite camps and everyone assuming Jim is doing everything for some nefarious ulterior motive.

B/R: Is your brother the greatest agitator of all time?

JH: I don't know why anybody would be agitated with him. Serious.

B/R: People who compete with him.

JH: No, people who think like you always assume that everything everybody is doing is for some ulterior motive. It's like we got a bunch of Deep Throats running around who want to find the conspiracy theory. Come on, get over it, it's football. It's like we got all kinds of things going on in the world that we are worried about, and we've got this nefarious evil satellite camp going on because this is going to be so bad for who? No, no.

The people that were quoted about it actually say, "Well, we just don't know what could happen here." It's like, OK, let me think about this for a minute. What could happen here? I don't know, these kids could go out here and in three hours be exposed to big-time college football coaches in their own town, which they could never afford. If I wanted to get an autograph of a Jim Harbaugh or Urban Meyer, then I've got to go to Columbus or Ann Arbor to do it? How many people can afford to do that? But the NCAA says if they come to your town, you can't get a picture with that coach because that's really a terrible evil.

What are we talking about here? What he's doing is great. I know I'm on my soapbox, but what he's doing is a lot of hard work. It's really hard to go out every day and bust your butt and coach guys in the hot sun who 99.99 percent will never play at the level that you're coaching at. You coach those guys like they are your own sons, and people want to mock him for that.

Great stuff from John. That's what's up. It would be an effort doing all the camps. Exactly why the other coaches are against it because they want to sit on their asses in June. Or they can't motivate their staffs. So many other reasons also. The only way to keep up with Jones(UM) now is to shut them down. Coming like a freight train baby! Bama is the limo!

Harbaugh still commands the stage,Got to admit though, I've always been a big fan of his brother and Jack for that matter. These two guys are a product of their family no doubt. Love how John let everyone know his true feelings about the satellite camp criticism.

I believe this, the reason Jim would succeed with kids at those camps isn't because he is who he is, but because they see that he cares enough to be there and work with them. And I cannot tell you how this view of him for me has been crystalized ever since I saw a quarterback clinic he put on in California way before he coached at Stanford.

He never stood on collegiate or NFL qb status or stsrdom, although he could have. No, he coached like his father coached him, with an appreication for the opportunity to make a difference and share his experience and knowledge with kids who love the same thing he does, football. Now, others can misread that enthusiasm as a false indicator or a put-on, but with Jim it's a daily thing. And if you miss that about him, then you've missed his essence and what makes him special.

I think he did that with Henry V, the battle cry. "Who stands with me this day will stand forever"—something like that. He told me that was the day that he felt like he really got them.

Oh, nice. Harbaugh and Shakespeare. I feel like we need the audio for this or a similar speech if he does this at Michigan. He's already got them, I would think, so now it is just a matter of choosing the appropriate play and quotation.
