Harbaugh moving Peppers to running back?

Submitted by Maizen on

Harbaugh says Jabrill Peppers: "Is a darn good running back. ... Year two may get a little crazy, may be one of the things we look at."

I honestly think that the run game has more to do with the offensive line. However, a defender that can play all over the field is not replaceable (Woodson/Polamalu types). You've got a guy that can tackle and hit like a linebacker, cover like a corner, and close on the ball like a safety. I'm all for Peppers platooning, but there's no way I'd take him off the field defensively.

Warning: I'm about to compliment Mike Valenti.

I know people here aren't too fond of Valenti, but I agree with what he said one day that Peppers moving to offense full-time would be better for us. Him as our starting running back would take us to another level, while taking him off defense wouldn't hurt us too badly I don't think.

Having him on both would be awesome, yes, but you don't want to beat the crap out of him every game.

Peppers is great stopping the run and coming up to blow up screen passes.
I don't see anyone on the team with the athleticism that Peppers has in being as good in coverage as well as at the line of scrimmage as he is.
I'd much rather have him on D and play offense as necessary vs more offensive snaps at the expense of defensive snaps, especially with the risk of injury.
Until we have a better run blocking OLine, I'd rather toss the RB by committee at our opponents which also lowers the risk of injury for each back by way of distributing the carries.

You know, Hitler was absolutely one of the worst people in history, but he did oversee the development the Autobahn system.  So folks like Hitler and Valenti can be right about something on occasion.  Doesn't make 'em good guys.

Also, I think Valenti is wrong w/r/t making Peppers full time offense.  Two-way?  Maybe (if he can hold up).  But we still need him at safety.

I really believe Peppers is irreplaceable if we play a spread opponent and we need a hybrid CB/Safety/LB type.

He is not an elite CB cover type like Lewis, often doesnt get his head around, although I wouldn't be surprised if he can improve there.  Still,he doesnt seem to have that natural hip flip of the lankier shut down CBs. Therefore, against a traditional power team or west coast offense I dont think he needs to be used as much on defense if we have solid man to man corners. In those games, deploy him more on offense.

In games where we face a spread option or offenses utilizing a lot of slot routes or running QBs I think he needs to be on defense more.  Lets not forget how we have been torched by these teams over the past decade because we did not have a Jabrill Peppers.

Like I said, find a Pabrill Jeppers and problem solved.

He looks so natural with the ball in his hands.

I don't know what's best for the team, It's pure selfishness that I just want to see what would happen if he got 15-20 touches on offense.

He's also going to tutor the rest of the team at study table, cook the meals for training table, lead the medical staff in their efforts in injury prevention and rehabilitation. Year three, he is scheduled to take over for Tolbert in the weight room and on the track, call all of the offensive and defensive plays, and replace Ablauf in the press department. Year 4 (he's getting a medical redshirt!), he will also be in charge of applying for medical redshirts. He will also be the only vote in the Heisman Trophy committee, and as such will have to withdraw himself from consideration, settling on only 3.

In a universe where it was possible for Peppers to keep playing defense, I would love to see him as our starting RB. He has shown to be extremely resourceful in that position - his burst, power, and vision - and has the size to boot.

That said, I wonder about his NFL RB prospects (versus DB). (Even if that were a possibility, I could see him choosing DB simply because he'd last longer there.)

Marcus Ray said in the offseason that based on what he had seen at practice Peppers would be Michigan's best running back.

I don't think there's any question he's probably the best RB we have. It's where he will be able to influence the game the most. I tend to think that's probably how he's being used right now. We just don't really have anyone that can replace Peppers at the NB position either. With us recruiting pretty damn well at RB (come on down Kareem), I think he'd be better utilized being used as he is right now, maybe with slightly more offensive snaps and a little less on defense.

RBs get hit straight-on, get hurt often and get worn down quickly. For a guy hoping for a Woodson-like pro career, the number of hits he'd get is a lot to expect. I love the idea in general and hope they use him in really big situations, but it's a pretty harsh thing to ask of someone's #4 role on the team.

versus their conference peers and nationally.

After 11 games, Michigan is ranked 72nd nationally in total offense.

In BIG10:

Rushing offense is ranked 8th this year (161 YPG) vs. 7th last year (163 YPG)

Passing offense is ranked 7th this year (227 YPG) vs. 11th last year (170 YPG).

So Michigan has not really improved in the rushing department at all YOY.

Biggest improvement has been in passing offense with Harbaugh schemes, ice-water-in-the-veins-Rudock and some halfway decent OL blocking.

for a subtantial amount of time we'd quickly realize what we were missing, the first time OSU hits Braxton Miller in the flat and he turns it into a 50 yard gain.

Or Harbaugh is just saying that ahead of The Game to force urbz to prepare more for jabrill than the other RBs. A little misdirection via the press never hurt anyone. I do think he gets more snaps this game than he ever has as it is, but still can't discount Harbaugh trying to "give out some information" to see if they'll bite.

but have pulled back a bit when I see how important he is on the defensive edge for us. Still, He'd be a Reggie Bush quality HB, IMO. I never thought he'd be a pure cover CB and I don't think he is. You just have to leave him on defense unless you can get an edge/space defender that is 75% as good as him to fill those shoes. If you can you make him a HB immediately. It just might be a moot point going into 2016 if the recruiting class yields a legitimate HB (guys that can run, see basic openings, not run into OL backs, etc). Love Smith but he's a perfect "change of pace" thumper, not a feature back.

I would love to see it for the OSU game and the bowl game and then get Kareem Walker in here. Kareem isn't quit the elite talent that Peppers is, but he's a crazy good running back and he wouldn't be a huge step down from Peppers next year. Which is why it is so important to get Walker to Ann Arbor. That way Peppers could still make a difference on offense some next year, but not have to be relied on so heavily. Walker is a guy who can make things happen in space, much like Peppers. That's what this offense needs.

but I hope not.  I think he could be very special on defense and special teams with the continued cameos on offense.  I'd rather we train up a guy who is a running back.

Yeah, it seems like the gist of Harbaugh's statement is that they are going to find more ways to fit him into situational offense schemes, which is great, but I still like the idea of him being primarily a defensive player because we really do need his speed and athleticism in the secondary in conjunction with Lewis and others. It will be interesting to see as they continue to develop the offense next year how Peppers gets used in it and how often though, although I tend to think how often would be governed largely by opponent.

Peppers knows he is going to be a two-way player next year.  Tell him that his job is to get his conditioning to ELITE levels during the summer.   He'll do it, and come back next year ready to take a ton of snaps both ways.

We shuttle RBs quite a bit, so even if he plays a bunch of RB he won't be in on every down.  He could play RB on 25-33% of the snaps or something and still make a HUGE impact on offense.

Peppers has great speed combined with amazing hard running. He has straight blown guys up on some runs his year. But he makes our defense elite as well, and we win with peppers only playing a handful of snaps on offense. He's also a RS freshman, so I'd expect him to do even more in the years to come. There's also a legit reason to expecting heisman talk next year just based on how this year has gone. It's going to be awesome to watch the rest of his Michigan career.
