Harbaugh media tidbits 8/15: Ahmir Mitchell & Shelton Johnson suspended

Harbaugh "Rashan Gary is a REALLY good player"

— angelique (@chengelis) August 15, 2016

Harbaugh says team is playing better at quarterback now than at this point last year.

— Jake Lourim (@jakelourim) August 15, 2016

Harbaugh says Mike Onwenu is 'one of my favorites.' Chris Evans might be the most impressive frosh right now he says.

— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 15, 2016

Ben Bredeson has played guard and tackle, Onwenu is playing both ways.

OK, so Harbaugh says two players out of Ahmir Mitchell, Shelton Johnson and Kareem Walker are suspended. But he won't say which two.

— Jake Lourim (@jakelourim) August 15, 2016

Kareem Walker is practicing, so it's Ahmir Mitchell and Shelton Johnson that are suspended.

Asked how long they'll be suspended, Harbaugh again declines to answer, then says "Good?" and walks out.

Harbaugh really gushed about Mike Onwenu. Says he can play both sides of the ball (and he has been).

Michigan spokesman says Shelton Johnson and Ahmir Mitchell are the suspended players Harbaugh referenced.

Harbaugh said he'd handle the matter internally.

Harbaugh doesn't seem like the type to say the QB situation is better than last year if it isn't.  Hopefully this calms a few of us down.

If Chris Evans is the most impressive freshman, that says a LOT about him.  This is a really good class, and we've heard good things already about several of these guys.

I kind of wondered if Bredeson wouldn't at least get some run at tackle, given our lack of depth and this staff's preference for versatile players.  Hopefully, things don't get so desperate that we need him there this season.  But just in case, it's good to know he won't be diving in blindly.

Well at this point last year the eventual starting QB had been on campus for like a couple weeks. If a battle between two players who have been in this system for over a year now were not in a better position it would definitely be time to panic.

Definitely a good point, and worth keeping in mind.

But then, Rudock is a guy that had starting experience in the Big 10 coming in, and also someone that turned out to really finish the season hot.

Obviously projecting these guys isn't as easy as "They're ahead of Rudock at this point, so they'll finish ahead of him too!"  I wish it worked that way.  But I do think it's cause for some small amount of optimism.

Not only that, but this time last year the coaching staff was all new as well ...and week one was on the road against a Top 20 program with a brand new QB.

I think it's safe to say -- based on remarks from Harbaugh -- that Shane Morris could start and beat Hawaii and that regardless of starter, the team won't be 0-1 after the first game.

a 5th year player this year. Mags and Kalis are both very good and have a ton of experience. If Bredeson is good enough to replace either of these players, then he would probably be the best OL we have ever had and would start from day 1. Let's just RS him and let him get ready to play next year.

Bredeson won't redshirt.

1. He needs to start next year. He (and, therefore, the OL) will be a lot better if he has some experience.

2. Drevno isn't afraid to play freshmen on the OL. At USC he started 3 of them one year.

3. Eligibility for a 5th year is worthless if a player decides to go pro after 3 or 4 years.

4. Experienced depth on the OL will probably be a minor concern in 2020 after Harbaugh has recruited full classes in 2017 - 2019. Wilson, Slaton and Ruiz will be redshirt juniors or seniors that year - if they haven't turned pro.

I feel a lot different when Harbaugh gushes about a player than previous coaches. He has shown that he can identify talent, so if he says that player is good you can take that to the bank.

the Chris Evans hype is real, ey? This is good. Just wonder where he plays full-time. Could be RB according to his tweet (worth noting he's in there with the 1s, Kalis is injured hence Dawson)

He wasn't going to get a meaninful snap this year with our DL.

Just depends on if he can practice with the team at some point.

Like the QB from Florida last year or the year before who was taking roids or whatever it was. He got a full year after the season had already started.
