Harbaugh on Brown
Sorry for the FP link, but this is really worth it. Here are a few money quotes from Harbaugh about Brown
“You could tell a lot from just looking at the Internet, seeing the track record and the facts,” said Harbaugh, noting that Brown was the only person offered the job. “He’s got a proven track record.”
I like this one in particular
“He’ll get right there in the action and I think that’s what his players appreciate about him the most,” he said. “He puts the players in positions to be successful, has answers for all those things. I was really looking for someone to be a real teacher, to teach the fundamentals, teach the techniques, the pursuit angles, the tackling. With a real bonus, does it all with an ultra-aggressive defensive philosophy.”

If Harbaugh offered him over all the NFL possibilities out there then he must be a very good coach.

This might be reaching, but I think things like this do provide some insight into Harbaugh's approach and mentality. I would guess that most coaches, when filling a vacancy, start by working up a list of "viable" candidates based on who has ties to the program, who he's worked with before, etc. Once that list is made, they prioritize the names and go after their favorite. This is basically what we all do when we speculate about coaching jobs as well.
Harbaugh just wants to know who is the very best, and starts with him. Maybe that list will include people he knows, or people with ties to the program, but it's not a given. He just wants to the best possible candidate he can find, and he operates under the assumption that he can get him.

I recall the story when we hired Shafer in 2008. He had just finished the 2007 season at Stanford, and there was a story about Harbaugh finding him by looking at statistics of Shafer's time at WMU. Harbaugh did not just hire someone he already knew. One would hope that after identifying Don Brown, Harbaugh was pleased with what he learned about the specifics of his personality, coaching style, etc., and didn't just go for the statistics.

Look, I don't know what you expected him to do. Against conventional offenses, the defense was fine all season - particularly playing teams that had a less than very good quarterback.
The main defensive lapses were against Indiana and Ohio State, both teams with talented players on spread offenses. Injuries on the defensive line played a part as did having linebackers who were less than outstanding. Against offenses such as this, you need playmakers on defense ... more than just a few... and depth.
Given what they had to work with, I though Durkin & Co. did a good job this year.
Ultimately, players have to make plays on both sides of the ball. Coaches can only do so much.

A little introspection is nice, but you don't want to be caught talking to yourself in public TOO much. It took me 14 years to convince those whitecoat sadists to let me off the island.

I was happy with Durkin the DC role aside from lack of in game adjust v IND and OSU. (not that it would have mattered vs OSU but you try something in 2nd half new...anything) But I liked the aggression and scheme in genehal.
What I wasnt as happy with was his position group coaching. When not completely covered by the great DL they were the one group of guys (DB v LB v DL) you didnt see growth out of players. Now again you can only work with what you have (no Dante Fowler here) but compare to growth of jenkins-stone and jeremy clark growth. No such guy came out of LB group.
BC had 1 LB with 16 TFL and 6 sacks... a 4 star JUCO transfer. Bolden and Morgan together had 8 TFL and 1 sack. LB coaching felt lacking.

Three decent senior linebackers should have been more of a positive presence. Looking for the Don (Dude?) to make an impact on that position group - despite the lack of seasoned players.

I don't know if he cares so much about our specific ranking as he does about beating Ohio State, and Durkin looked overmatched that day.

"Ultra aggresive" I can only imagine what type of aggresiveness he is talking about. The defense must be so fast you can only see a blur when they go after the QB or ball carrier.

This is probably all the more reason why, in the new version of site (whenever that ends up happening), we may need a resume board and a situations wanted page. In essence, and MGoCraigslist, which I am willing to write a guide for so it does not become weird of creepy (which means it will inevitaly become weird and creepy),

should have been the major criteria for the DC job at Michigan. OSU has scored over 40 points a game against us since Urban arrived in Columbus. I have read some of the articles on Brown and his philosophy. It is not clear to me whether his defensive schemes can defend a competently executed spread offense.
A super aggressive defense can be exposed by a good throwing spread QB. I hope Brown will have some answers.
December 23rd, 2015 at 12:05 PM ^
and they were 1-AA they played Chip Kelly's New Hampshire teams. The W-L I think came out in favor of Brown - not sure about the details of how the defense performed.
December 23rd, 2015 at 4:15 PM ^
And Brown held Armanti Edwards and App State in the 20's in a National Championship game.
December 23rd, 2015 at 4:49 PM ^
could have done the same the next year.
December 23rd, 2015 at 5:46 PM ^
every defense can be exposed by a good throwing spread QB, and pretty much every defense can be exposed by good non-spread QBs too. Good players are good and will do good much of the time.
December 23rd, 2015 at 12:07 PM ^
Also, Harbaugh basically confirmed that he saw BC had the No. 1 D in America and figured he'd see who the DC was. Process started there.
So, more or less, it was "That guy had the best defense in America. I wonder what his deal is." ... Don Brown, meet Michigan.

When my wife and I watch Michigan Football games, she always points out that Durkin is always smiling. My first reaction(while not neccessarily a functional one) is that he pops the blue(viagra) pill before games and get wound up that way. I don't believe this in anyway or form, but is an unfiltered response to my wifes point.
