Harbaugh asked about job status, if he wants to be back

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Just got done watching the 49ers press conference.

Maybe Jim's mind has been on something else.......or somewhere else....

Imagine how Jim feels right now. He has to go to work everyday to coach a team that has probably tuned him out. His bosses are plotting to either fire him at any moment or trade him, possibly to a team he doesn't want to coach. Every person he sees knows all of this and also knows Michigan wants him. His days must be brutally stressful, not knowing what his life will be like days, weeks, months from now. Good problem to have in some regards, but you can see it weighing on him.

How must he tolerate?

Should he take 5 or 6 million and an eight year deal from Michigan, join the coaches he knows who have been legend at M, get a bunch of perks, return to your hometown and buy a nice house in Barton Hills?

or

Should he accept a trade to New York City or just across the bay and work with lesser talent than he has had at San Francisco but remain an NFL head coach? Still, his salary would come in at probably 6 or 7 million once he renegotiated his contract and he could live in a nice section of Jersey or just stay in Santa Clara.

These are difficult problems to have. I wonder if he is thinking he should have just accepted the trade to Cleveland last winter.

Again with this same rhetoric that people were using before Hoke got canned. Yes, we get it, these guys make and will make a lot of money, and that is probably awesome. But yes, they are still human and despite making a lot of money, they can have a rough time, get stressed out, feel bad about getting fired, feel bad about having people plot against them. They aren't robots (Except Bill Belichik).

If he'd made up his mind he would say something like, "I'm staying in SF" or "I'm not a candidate for the Michigan job."

You have a guy who's a hot commodity in the NFL and is a candidate for a major college position. Pretend that you're his advisor/agent.

Are you going to advise him to grab the first offer, or to wait and have all the alternatives laid out for evaluation?

If I wasn't a Michigan person, I'd say, "Let's see what the other offers are before deciding."

Of course, I AM a Michigan person, so I'd really say, "Take the fucking Michigan offer and let's kick some Sparty and Buckeye ass!" But that's just me.

They're saying "someone will try to get under his skin and get him to explode."  "Something's funky in SF now, period.  How to get it fixed is leaving people with question marks."

Implication is that the problems are on Harbaugh.  These people are local media--SF football coverage, in fact. They're waving goodbye to Jim.

is that he's not feeling love for SF. Were he looking to go to another NFL team, that is the likely response. I want him as bad as anyone, but to read his statement as "I want to win games at UM" betrays maize and gold colored glasses. But he still has not said "no"!

it's exactly what any coach would say in that situation. He works for the 49ers until his boss says otherwise, and it's not his place to say anything different.

His responses don't really mean anything.

I just can't imagine him leaving the NFL right now. Sure, this season isn't going as planned, but he seems too competitive to give it up. I see him going to another team, any other team, and continuing his quest for a SB ring. I hope, hope, hope that I'm wrong, but I just don't see it. Then again, maybe I'm just expecting the worst. Either way, he'll give us our answer in due time.

He can remain in the NFL and win a Super Bowl like his brother, but then what?

Or he can return to his alma mater and restore the legacy of his former coach and mentor. Ushering in a Michigan football Renaissance and a new age of glory. He can become a legend, immortalized in bronze outside Schembechler-Harbaugh Hall.

Did Saban have other NFL offers after his mediocre stint at Miami?  Did Saban have to deal with academic and character requirements at Alabama.  Did Saban have to deal having issues finding good players in his own backyard?

Let's try to see this from Harbaugh's perspective.  Personally, I think Harbaugh has not completely closed the door on Michigan, but we're a backup for him now.  If he gets multiple NFL offers (including the Giants), we are in trouble.  If all he has is Oakland and the Michigan job, we have a better chance.  Unfortunately, I have a feeling multiple NFL teams will want him.
