Harbaugh and Kansas = mutual interest?

Submitted by myrtlebeachmai… on
ESPN insider blurb (can't link - paywall) says JH is "likely stil their first choice"... and that interest is "shared"... Didn't see that one coming...

I actually don't believe this is possible. Stanford has bigger money sitting around than KU. They can afford to outbid by a heavy amount. Unless Harbaugh is in the mood that he conquered the Pac-10 (which he did), and it's time to move to a different conference.

I've head Cincinnati's looking for a coach. Seriously why would he want to try Kansas. Football is clearly the #2 sport there and there will be better opportunities; if not this year, then next.

He's born and raised in California, schooled and played at Michigan. However, his wife is from Kansas (As I learned from ESPN College Game Day). So, maybe that's the interest...

I though the rumors of Harbaugh to KU had some legs. If you didn't hear Jim hired his dad Jack yesterday to coach his RBs for Stanford's bowl game since his current RB coach left for the Western Kentucky job (IIRC). Just my opinion but if you were serious about staying at a school wouldn't you look for a more permanent hire? Maybe it's just too early/ impossible to get that in December?

that the Stanford academic requirements are to stiff and JH can't get the player/thuggs eeeer, students he needs to top the Pac 10 every year. Plus next year, USC BETTER, UCLA BETTER, and Watch out for WASHINGTON, DON'T FORGET ABOUT OREGON,& ARIZONA SHOULD BE OK. It may be a career saving move for JH?

First of all, Kansas is losing their QB and looks to return to being a well-below average Big 12 North team. Meanwhile, Stanford is returning to its former glory. Second of all, I'm not taking anything reported about Harbaugh's interest in other coaching jobs after the Notre Dame coaching search.

As a Jayhawk (UM for grad school), I too found it hard to believe this could be true. Here are the details: 1) Harbaugh gets $2.8 million/annually - nearly double his current contract 2) Harbaugh's wife really wants to move back to the Kansas area and be closer to home...reports have made it sound that she has some ill family members in the region. 3) While the state as a whole may not be the most exciting (similar to Michigan!), Lawerence - like Ann Arbor - is a blast. It's a very, very cool town and probably one of the most underrated college towns in the country 4) KU has arguably the second best football facilities in the Big 12 after Tejas. The school just finished an exclusive indoor football facility that has been regarded as one of the best in the nation. So much so that Nebraska and Oklahoma use KU's facilities as a fundraising benchmark to improve their own. Moreover, the current stadium rennovation project will make Memorial Stadium not only the oldest stadium west of the Mississippi, but one of the nicest too. Granted, it's not near the size as Michigan Stadium, but it's constructed in a way that amplifies sound and creates a great environment. It's incredible how similar 50,000 Jayhawkers and 100,000 Wolverines can sound pretty much the same 5) For what he was making at Stanford, he could buy a normally sized house in Palo Alto. For what he is making in Kansas, he could buy a castle in Lawrence. This was apparently a big selling point... 6) KU's Athletic Director has been regarded as the best in the country in many circles and is VERY well respected. Apparently, Perkins (KU's AD) will essentially give Jim the reigns to the football program without any restrictions. There were some other details, but I need to finish studying...Just thought I would share

While the state as a whole may not be the most exciting (similar to Michigan!) Michigan might not be the most popular place right now (thanks to its horrible economy), but can you really compare a state that touches four of the five Great Lakes with a landlocked state in the middle of nowhere?

I as very impressed with this guy's gratuitous insertion of (UM for grad school)--but if he has REALLY been to Kansas, he would know that it is the 14th largest state in the Union--but one of the Top Five in terms of "boring as hell, nothing to see, and wow I thought Nebraska sucked!"

There's no upside. He'll never win the Big 12 at Kansas, but he could win the Pac-10 at Stanford. He's a quality guy, not quanity. If he was at quanity guy first, he never would have made the "quality" remarks against his alma mater. The only thing about Kansas is, it's physically "closer" to Michigan. If his desire is to coach at Michigan, the road does not go through Kansas. It very well could go through Palo Alto. If he doesn't end up at Michigan, he'll go to the NFL. I don't believe beating Carroll 2 out of 3 is good enough. I think he wants to win the PAC-10 and put Carroll in his rearview mirror.

Money talks. While I don't understand why Stanford wouldn't at least match KU's offer, the Jayhawks are willing to throw a package at Harbaugh that would double what he is currently making. Moreover, he would basically have absolute authority -"full discretion" over KU's football team. That's not something he has at Stanford. I'll be the first to admit that Stanford is definitely a more prestigious football school (and probably every other sport but basketball). But, as Gilyard of Cincy pointed out yesterday, it's a business and coaches will likely go to the highest bidder.

KU alumni I know are fairly confident that Harbaugh will be their next coach. One guy even told me it was a done deal. I pointed out that I heard the same thing about Houston Nutt. The only thing that may lure Jim is that his wife grew up in the Kansas City area and he would be very close to the in laws. I also heard that KU is willing to double Harbaugh's current Stanford salary. If RR doesn't pan out here over the next 2 to 3 years it would be really easy to pry him away from KU. Though I'm still banking on RR turning our team around. I wouldn't quite compare Lawrence (since I live near by) to Ann Arbor (where I lived for almost 5 years) in my book, But I may become a KU football fan if Harbaugh is hired!

I am a life long Michigan fan but moved to the Kansas City area 15 years ago (Kansas side-Leawood) and although KS is first and foremost a hoops school there is an opportunity for football. The facilities are solid. The B12 North division is up for grabs as Texas, OU, Tex Tech and OK State (best 4 B12 football programs) are in the south. Fans will show up and get excited in Lawrence and they traveled well to the Orange Bowl when given the chance. Seems the offer is considerably more then whats on the table at Stanford. However Jayhawks graduate a 4 year starter at QB, 4 linemen and best reciever. D side of the ball just bad. I dont think it is the right job and a lateral move but there is opportunity.

But threads keep bouncing from here to Scout and back. There's almost a synergy between these two boards. There is currently a thread on Scout about Henson and whether he committed to Florida State first. Funny, but it appeared here this morning before that. I mean, if the guy didn't get his answer here--what poster on Scout is gonna have the info?

let him suck ass at whereever he is at. Seriously, I'm sick and tired of this Michigan hating movement. Last year, after the seasons were done, we were setup to make the NCAA basketball Sweet 16 and a Bowl game. Obviously, this did not happen. BFD. Grow a sack and support our soon-to-be alumn. Brian, be positive, we are Michigan. That gets me through tough meetings with HBS guys. Common. This is a downward trend, but will not last forever.

This better not be "Truth and Rumors"....that is the dumbest blog. He would be a fool to even consider Kansas, and judging by his Michigan degree, I doubt that he is a fool.

and complete control is a hell of an incentive, but wow. Ok, family is important, but what about his kids? Are you seriously telling me that any school system in Kansas can match Palo friggin Alto! I suppose the Lawrence castle comes with private tutors and a chimp named bubbles.

1. Harbaugh thinks this is a step up, either in the resources or recruitment standards, in his ability to build a program. 2. Kansas backed a dump truck full of money up to his house. 3. Most likely, he did interview for ND job and that either caused a rift between him and the AD, or widened an existing one past the point of no return. I don't think any scenario is likely though, and would be surprised if he left.

610 Sports Radio in Kansas City has been saying that Jim Harbaugh will fly to Lawrence following Saturday's Heisman Trophy Ceremony to accept the deal to be the new Kansas Head Coach. He's expected to have an annual salary of $2.7 million a year. They are citing multiple sources. They also have it on their front page. http://www.610sports.com/
