Harbaugh on 97.1

Submitted by denardogasm on
Just an early morning thread when nothing's happening on the board.

Driving home from work right now listening to a great interview with Harbaugh. By FAR the most I've ever heard him talk to a media personality. It's crazy how different he is talking to Stoney and Bill compared to a guy like that jerk on Fox Sports.

Interesting points: Asked if he punishes guys for penalties and he said in the PSU game the Oline and Dline were absolved for their sins by playing so well otherwise so it's hard to be mad at them. Then he said the Special Teams was also absolved for their sins on the blocked punt by covering the punt so well on the forced fumble. A lot of praise for Noah Furbush. Says he was the one that blocked the PSU player out of the way as he was trying to get to the loose ball and allowed Chesson to get it. Then on the JD punt return, Lewis told him in the huddle "get ready for this return coach, I'm about to break their backs" and Harbaugh said "by all means go ahead!" Praised Lewis for fighting from start to finish on the return and said when he turned on he tape the next day he discovered Furbush blocked SEVEN guys on the return!! Clearly Furbush has the ability to see the field somewhere next year. Will be interesting how the LB rotation works out.
Other quotes I was able to get down while he was talking:

"People say to me 'you have all this enthusiasm, where'd you get that?' It can from Bob Ufer! Listening to Bob Ufer as a kid."

On OSU:
"They've won with numbing consistency. Had 10 players on each side of the ball that could have been preseason all Big10."

And finally:

"What is your favorite food at Thanksgiving?"
"Steak!"

Listened to him love a lot when I was a kid, so I know exactly what he's saying. It's no surprise too me that the Ufer influence reaches the heights that it does.

Even though Furbush, McCray, Wangler and Winovich have not seen the field at LB this year, they've gotten a full season in the Harbaugh/Durkin system and at least 2-3 of them should be able to rotate in and be effective alongside Gedeon. Plus a top LB recruit like Jones, Bush, Jackson or Johnson could see some playing time.

I see Ferns is playing FB for WVU now.

Safety will be fine, too, with Thomas and Hill, and Kinnel getting into the nickel rotation more. Going to be an amazing defense next year.

Hoping WTKA creates a podcast of the interview. Will look for it!

Thought I heard McCray injured his leg. Ferns is at wvu like you said. Winovich was switched to offense but maybe that was for this year.

Seeing Furbush on special teams making an impact last week was great to see.

Think Sam Webb said Bush wanted to be an EE so if he came here he'd have a great jump on learning the defense.

Ufer was absolutely the best If you were a Michigan fan. Back in the day, you could not get all the games on tv. Ufer was our conduit to Michigan football. He is at least partially responsible for a very passionate fan base. His influence on the program obviously continues to run deep, up to the top of the program.

Back in the 70s you were just lucky to see 3 Michigan games televised per season. Usually at top ranked Missouri team or ND when that series restarted. Then the OSU game and a bowl game. Most of us in our 40s and older, grew up listening to Ufer. I always turned the televised Rose Bowl volume off and listen to Ufer while watching the game.

"People say to me 'you have all this enthusiasm, where'd you get that?' It can from Bob Ufer! Listening to Bob Ufer as a kid."

This quote is so fantastic and something that really resonates with me. I wish the younger board members had the privaledge to listen to Ufer on a regular basis. I do think that it changes the person listening. To hear Harbaugh say this sort of blows my mind.

if he rewarded Henry for drawing a defensive holding call while he was being double-teamed. Somehow Huard saw the call, but I couldnt' find it no matter how many times I rewound it.

Harbaugh has a great way of positively reinforcing his players, when he comments to the media, and he is typically very specific about one area that the player did particularly well in the game. Its like a public "helmet sticker" that sends a message to the player';  "good job for working and improving".  Players that make strides get some shout out in the media and the whole team in general never gets trashed in any way.  Thats for behind closed doors if necessary.  He is in these kids heads in a good way, and they fight for him and they all have each others back.  Team.

I loved the steak answer! No hesitation, it was loaded in the chamber from a conversation earlier this season in the media he said his favorite food was steak and milk...
