He's much better than the last two coaches we've had. Still waiting for him to win a championship, though. At any level. 2nd place in the Superbowl doesn't count. I can see the haters now. "Harbaugh went to Italy to say a prayer with the Pope so he could win a championship!" The memes are coming, people.

Harbaugh will bring a National Championship to Ann Arbor. I'd guess more than one before all is said and done. Once the offense is completely stocked with high end talent, it's lights out dudes. They have quite a few of (their) players now but they are young. They still need a couple classes of reserves to fill in and keep the turnaround of players filtering through but it's close. Third year in the offense. Ohio State won't have the fire power and the brains to crack wrists with the boss before long.

NFC championship assclown. Thats more than any college football coach. It is the highest football level and his phone rings more than any college fooball coaches to come to the league. Go hate somewhere else shitbird. There are a lot of college coaches scared to go to the league because the playing field is level ie. Urban Meyer

right, getting to the Superbowl means absolutely nothing. Hell everyone has done it who has coached. It's an easy accomplishment and I don't think anyone is impressed with that. Look at his resume, it really sucks everywhere he's been the team he took over was a championship team and he never had any success with any of them.......... Never built any team up....

Brian Kelly is on this list.  Let's take a look:

Went 118-35-2 in 13 seasons at Grand Valley State, won 5 conference titles and 2 National Championships.

19-16 in 3 years at CMU, taking them from MAC bottom-feeder to conference champions.

Took over mediocre Cincinnati and went 34-6 in three seasons with back-to-back Big East championships and BCS bowl berths.

Was 55-23 in 6 seasons at ND prior to 2016, including a National Championship appearance.

Overall, he has 230 wins which is 44th all-time.  He'll likely pass Schembechler on the wins list this season.  He's already got guys like Spurrier, Tressell and Saban in his rear-view mirror.  At 55 years old, as long as his face doesn't explode, Kelly will be in rare company when all is said and done.

25 years of winning championships all over the map in college football.  Only had one losing season - his first year in Mt. Pleasant with Central.

Then he went 4-8 in 2016.  What a bum, right?

Franklin and Kelly are 8 and 9 on this list...  plus no Saben and Urb's.  Is this a list of coaches who haven't won a championship?  and if it is... Kelly and Franklin are 8 and 9??  This does not say much for depth of quality coaches.

It's coaches most likely to win their first national championship next.  I'm not sure who you put above Franklin/Kelly considering there aren't that many schools that can compete for a MNC, and Clemson, Alabama,  and OSU have coaches who have won one.  Maybe McElwain or Orgeron, but they haven't exactly shown a ton yet.

2017 class is a Championship class

D-Line: Going to be the best in Michigan history when they are Juniors/Seniors. Especially if by the grace of God Rashan Gary stays his Senior year

WR: This WR core is going to be INSANELY talented. Again Best in Michigan history

QB: Veteran Peters? SOLID

Secondary: STACKED

Linebackers:  Singleton, Ross, and Anthony? AMAZING

KIcking/Punting: We have only gotten the #1 punter and #1 kicker two years in a row

Oline led by Ruiz and Filliaga will be STOUT

RB: O'Maury Samuels already has the physique of a Senior College athlete. By his junior senior year he will be like a Roman God

ITS ON IN A COUPLE YEARS

honestly if we have a decent season this year (10ish wins) I think next year you can circle as a possibly special year.  only lose 3 starters (Cole, Hurst and Mcray).

WR 4 Sophmores guessing 2 are showing signs of being stars after this year

QB 5th year Senior Speight.  should be solid at worst. could be very good at best

OL always a ?  lose Cole but I think we should have some peaces that will be able to be put in place to make the line a plus next year

RB only lose isaac, everyone else is older we will find a dude here.

DL Lose Hurst...but yeah...lol...will be silly too many nice peaces not to fail here. 3rd year Gary...god I feel sorry for QBs...

LB some good options

Secondary Some very good options

I want to come together in the worst way. It is, I think. But the time it's taking is making me realize how tough a job it is and how good we had it in the early 90's.

But I agree with this assessment. Even though I think that there is a very low chance Gary stays.

It's gotta be up there. I mean, I think that most people are fed up with last several years of a less than good offensive line. If JohnnyBlue's scenario comes together (10ish wins, improvement), we'll be bringing in another talented class and returning Grant Newsome (so long as he fully recovers). That could be huge.

Agreed that it will be sad that Gary is unlikely to finish out his eligibility. But isn't the discussion that we will be very good in 2018? Gary will still be here.

EDIT: sorry, I know realize that the OP post of this mini-thread referred to Gary staying until his senior year.

He's an excellent coach, he has hired great assistant coaches. If he gets another 2 top 10 recruiting classes He will win a national championship in 2 to 4 years. Get ready for some fun times as Michigan becomes a perennial playoff team.

OP, I suggest linking the original article next time vs. a slideshow summary from 247Sports.

[USAToday] Only Four Active College Football Coaches have Won Titles, Who's Next?

  1. Jim Harbaugh, Michigan
"Harbaugh has yet to finish higher than third in the Big Ten’s East Division. But it’s plainly clear that Michigan is making steady progress toward a national title — it’s not inevitable, particularly with Ohio State in the way, but a spot in the College Football Playoff and an eventual charge at the championship seems in the cards for Harbaugh and the Wolverines."
  2. Chris Petersen, Washington
  3. David Shaw, Stanford
  4. Clay Helton, USC
  5. Mark Richt, Miami (Fl.)
  6. Gary Patterson, TCU
  7. Tom Herman, Texas
  8. James Franklin, Penn State
  9. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame
  10. Kirby Smart, Georgia

The 4 active coaches with National Championships already, including 9 of the last 11:

  1. Nick Saban (2003, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015)
  2. Urban Meyer (2006, 2008, 2014)
  3. Jimbo Fisher (2013)
  4. Dabo Swinney (2016)

Gene Chizik is still an active college coach (DC at University of North Carolina), but not an active head coach.

Pete Carroll is also still an active head coach (obviously), but not at the college level.

Might Les Miles land a new gig down the road?

It is pretty amazing the run that Saban and Meyer have had (and that only four active college head coaches have a title to their names).
