Happy Trails - LB Darrion Owens Commits to Miami

Submitted by Michael Scarn on

Analysts had him predicted to Georgia, but his name was floated around a few times as having interest in Michigan, somewhat recently listed as "Warm" for the Wolverines.

Noah Furbush and Dwight Williams are remaining top targets at linebacker with the most interest in Michigan, IIRC.

We're also keeping a close eye on Dru Tranquill, for what it's worth. Hasn't been offered yet, but has exploded in camps and may well get one.

Darrion Owens offers also included Boston College, Iowa State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Rutgers, South Florida, Tennessee, Troy, Central Florida and West Virginia. Greg Mattison was his recruiter for Michigan, according to Rivals.

Is the need for a 3rd LB in this class a necessity? It seems like we've gotten some pretty good depth at that position since Hoke et all have been in charge.

I think we could well use another WILL. Some think Gedeon will wind up at MIKE, which, if true, doesn't really leave that much behind Ross, who may well be a three year man based on his potential. RJS is his backup now, and Gedeon could be a WILL, but if you remove Gedeon it gets thin fast.

Has RJS underperformed thus far? It seems like every other linebacker gets mentioned for a position move or as an eventual starter at MIKE/WILL/SAM. I haven't heard much on him.

It's not really fair to cast it as "underperforming." He's only going to be a true sophmore, and the common assumption going in was that he would need a redshirt year to work on technique, if not size (which as it turned out, he needed as well). I think the fact that you hear so much about Bolden and Ross is because of their talent (especially with Ross) and depth issues.

I'm sure they show lots of sweet videos of the 80's to recruits, but has anyone see what the program is like now? A talent black-hole that goes 8-5 every year whilst playing in front of 5,000 fair-weather fans every week
