Happy Today-is-Really-a-Friday Posbang

With the July 4th holiday tomorrow, today is most folks' Friday for a glorious summer weekend and to celebrate the greatest country ever conceived by man.    I copy the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of  Independence here to honor those brave and visionary founders:

 


IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. We may have to find new land again after reading that. It's very sad Hollywood and a few nuts can influence our government. I guess money talks.

tomorrow to pick up a Kawasaki Vulcan 900, only 1900 miles, $3,500.  I've bought five bikes on e-bay now, and absolutely NO regrets or problems.

fireworks, golf.  And now I think I am going to pick up a copy of the Declaration of Independence.  In Cold Blood is kind of creeping me out and I need a new read.  That looks like a good one.  They have that in paperback?

Capote.  It is exceptional.  It may be the most thorough exploration of the nature of violent crime and mental illness ever put in print or on screen.  Detailed and balanced to such an extent that it is really playing tricks on my mind (and forcing me to check the locks on my doors).  I will finish it (and enjoy it), but it is not exactly light-sunny-weekend reading material.  Gonna put it aside for a while.

I will never forgive capote for what he said about kerouace (it's not writing, it's typing), however both 'in cold blood' and 'on the road' sit in my top ten favorite books  (with Darma Bums just outisde the top ten)

was not exactly well balanced.  He talked shit about pretty much any other author of his time that had the audicity to be good.  He basically swore off his best friend for winning the Pulitzer Prize.

At least this morning, I have to fill the time. The best part about this "Friday" for me is as follows:

A) I am leaving at noon or so.

B) The retirement reception (we have a lot of these around this time of the year) had Bob Evans catering, so I have eggs, sausage and biscuits at my desk right now.

C) The storm is more or less done.

I even get to spend the Fourth by myself - my wife works and my kids will be spending the night with my in-laws.

(if you are able to in consideration of work loan and computer access), pick a topic and just learn everything there is no know about it.  If you aren't going to do shit today, become an expert in some interesting topic.  Previous choices of mine have been the Challenger disaster, Woodstock 99, and the events leading to the American civil war.  Some fascinating shit.  It can be your "foods that start with the letter Q" category if you ever find yourself on Jeopardy.
