Happy Today-is-Really-a-Friday Posbang

With the July 4th holiday tomorrow, today is most folks' Friday for a glorious summer weekend and to celebrate the greatest country ever conceived by man.    I copy the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of  Independence here to honor those brave and visionary founders:

 


IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. are very few courses in Michigan, or at least the Detroit Metropolitan area, that are better than Shepherd's Hollow.  It is very manageable from the middle tees but if you play it from the tips you may leave with low self-esteem.  Couple peices of advice.  Don't drink.  It costs like 90 bucks to play the course and if you are going to pay it you might as well give it your best shot.  Save the beer for Heather Highlands.  Also, make sure you don't have a "to-do" list that is scheduled to begin 4 hours after you tee off.  Shepherd's is awesome but it gets a ton of play on weekends and does not move all that well.  Pack your patience and enjoy the scenery, because it will not be a quick round.  That being said, it is one of the best golfing experiences around here.

You guys were right...it was a great course.  I was playing it on 4 hours of sleep after a wedding Saturday night, so it ate me alive (from the blue tees) for the first 6 holes.  Got my stuff together and played pretty well coming in.  We played 10 - 18 to start (beautiful finishing hole) and then 1 - 9.  

If that course was in the Chicago area it'd be $200.  Great value for $85, from that perspective.

Those greens though...damn.

followed by hopefully a calm weekend.  Family coming in from out of town, so beer, pool time, a big pulled pork on the smoker and I have to work in a 3.5 hour bike ride in there somewhere (half Ironman in two weeks...ugh).

The Tour finally starts Saturday (the way many on this board love the WC, I love the TdF despite the fact that it's French). 

Won't have access to a smoker or kettle grill so no real q-ing, but maybe a couple flank steaks w/chimichuri.

Enjoying my kids. And my girlfriend whom I've introduced to the kids after seeing her for 9 months and things seem fine.

My idiot uncle's sketchy fireworks display.

A bluegill fry.

Beer.

Watch world cup quarterfinal games with kids, go hiking in state parks, find some fireworks display.  In the evening have a few cold ones, and play some guitar.

All that sounded pretty lame when I was younger.  Now it sounds pretty frickin' awesome.  Happy Independence Day!

Fireworks over the ocean at my folks' place in CT, with my sons and my girl. Been going to that display on the Sound since I was 3 and it's still awesome. 

Then grillin' and drinkin' and swimmin' and ...

to my office right now as they practice, that as they come streaking by you can't hear them until they are virtually on top of us and then past at nearly the speed of sound.   looking out the office window as they go by, work is not going to last long today....

the Declaration of Independence that is hanging in my home office (inherited from my parents) and reflect on it's meaning and significance. Take the dog to his vet appointment for chemo treatment. Maybe catch a movie. I hope everyone has a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend.

Embarking in just a few minutes for our epic Michigan road trip.  First stop is Hell...last stop is Paradise....and GR, TC, Mackinac and more in between.

Going to Gonzo's Bigg Dogg brew in Kalamazoo with all the fam, then lakehouse at Gun Lake all weekend for some beer, water volleyball tourny, beer, skiing, beer, swimming, beer, tubbing, beer, tieing up the boats with friends and watching the fireworks with lots of beer! then on Sunday ending with bloody marys and crawing in the dark man cave... 'MERICA! Happy 4th ya'll!

Beer and BBQ on Friday, followed by watching the Tour de France Saturday and Sunday. Just offset the unAmericaness of watching a French cycling event on 4th of July weekend, I will likely find some time to light off fireworks and shoot some guns as well. 'Murica, fuck yeah!

Since I was a wee lad, I've always helped set up for a big celebration on the 4th of July. It is a welcome couple of days of completely mindless labor with good friends and good scotch. Have some fun and keep it safe!
