Happy Sweet Sixteen Day Posbang Thread

Submitted by ijohnb on

There was a day when the Sweet Sixteen only reminded me of what a dumpster fire the Michigan basketball program was.  This time brought with it only a passing interest in the NCAA tourney after the first day rush, it brought resentment and envy, it brought myself to the brink of actively cheering for Michigan State because at least I knew their player's names and because I was sick of watching Butler and George Mason.  Those days are over.  Happy Sweet Sixteen Day.  I hope I like my present.  BEAT THE VOLS.

too.  After reaching an unreasonable level of intoxication last Saturday before and during the Texas game, I vowed that I was staying stone sober for this game because I want to keep my wits, watch the State game, etc.  But I don't know if I can handle a sober loss.  A sober loss means that I won't even watch the State game because "State sucks, the hell with State, those stupid bastards, and I hate Louisville and Kentucky too, I hope they all lose and die!!!!" and I will toss in turn far into the night thinking about different ways the game could have gone.  To hell with that, 12 pack of Oberon it is.

The second weekend and beyond of the tournament quickly becomes a crapshoot.  Regardless of outcome, this has been a wonderful season, particularly if you think back to the waning seconds of our loss to Arizona.

We were 6-4 with people wondering if we'd even make the tournament.  Since then we roared through to a Big Ten championship, made the Big Ten tournament final, and are in the Sweet 16.  Pretty good, all-in-all.

But, you know, let's win.

I am in Starkville, MS.  My son has been after me to take him to a baseball game this spring.  He has been sick with complications of his genetic disease and we have been unable to go.  Lately he is feeling better.  A friend handed me tickets to tonight's game in front of him last week.  It is all he has talked about since then.  The baseball game is, of course, at the same time as UM-UT.  I couldn't bring myself to skip the baseball game tonight and disappoint him.

But there is 100% chance of rain tonight, so I will be watching basketball!

I can't recall a previous tournament where a double-digit seed was proclaimed such an overwhelming favorite by the media over a seed like ours. I have yet to see a prediction that picks us, it's unreal. I trust in Beilein and the time to prepare. Our coach is better, our players are better. Win the game.

If Kentucky looses and when Michigan wins, my boss (Kentucky alum) has agreed to give me his courtside seats for the Michigan/Louisville game!  Lookin forward to a Sunday morning drive to nap town.
