Happy National Bourbon Day: Friday Night Drinking Thread
Well then, I guess I will make myself a drink. Whiskey ginger, coming right up.
Last night I had a Manhattan for the first time. It was okay. Any Manhattan lovers out there?
Right here. But my favorite is actually an offshoot of the Manhattan called the Old Pal. It's bourbon (or rye) with Campari & dry vermouth, up with an orange twist.
Mmmmm manhattans are my go to open bar drink
Makers 8 year old, grapefruit bitters, and sweet vermouth. It was.....interesting. Served at Maiz in Ann Arbor.
Bakers for me and the wife
I seriously considered Bakers today at the store. Bakers is delicious, but I went with Bookers. National bourbon day only comes once a year.
I've got bookers of the shelf too. The bakers was more full so I went with it. The one good thing abut living in this godforsaken state is the cheap bourbon
A woman that drinks bourbon...that's a keeper!
And had some Buffalo Trace last night.
Fun fact: they are made at the same distillery
So are Eagle Rare, George T Stagg, and Pappy van Winkle, all good choices.
Until I had Thomas Handy. Blanton's was very smooth, but Handy had an amazing after taste 10 seconds later. Delicious.
Woodford Four Wood for me.
How is the four wood? I haven't had it, but there are mixed reviews. I know folks who loved it, others said it lacked balance. The criticism was too much wood... but that shouldn't be a surprise with this one, right?
Glenmorangie 10 year neat
Love me some scotch, but seriously?
what's wrong with it? gotta start somewhere
In honor of this day, I finally decided to open that bottle of Elijah Craig in the cabinet. Actually, not bad at all and it has finally made the trip to the area around Bardstown, Kentucky a few years ago (wife's extended family) totally worth it.
Kentucky's finest IMHO
The words of a man who has not has him some pappy
This is a guy that thinks 200 dollars is too much to pay for any beverage. Angel's is excellent and only 50.
Point taken. However at that price point there are many that offer a lot of different favors, be sure to expand beyond the emvy
If you can find it, try Very Old Barton. Distilled in Bardstown, about $14 a bottle. It is fantastic, so good it was selected as a bourbon at Zingerman's Roadhouse. In every bottle on bourbon, there is $8 worth of booze, everything else is marketing.
Best stuff out there.
Mazel tov! That is mighty tasty stuff.
High West Double Rye. But Basil Hayden had my heart.
and probably cheap specials at the bar, but there's live music, good food and pool, so not bad for a post-celebration of the girlfriend's 21st.
Wishing I had some of the Pappy Van Winkle 20 that is sitting in my uncle's house in A2, though.
Offered a new job today...drinking (cheap champagne)...interspersed with homebrew. Cheers!
Got a promotion on Monday. Stone Ruination to start off the night.
I will have a three finger glass of angels envy then break into the pappy
off to have me some Woodfords Reserve
I'm celebrating with some Larceny Bourbon. I've lost 34 pounds in 10 weeks and today/tonight was my cheat day. Pizza and bourbon...mmm.
Love this stuff. I'm a bigger fan of scotch (bring on the campfire in a bottle called Ardbeg any day of the week!), but bourbon is good, too. And Bulleit is a damn fine one.
Milwaukee's finest: Lafront Brewery Maple Vanilla Dopplebock Lager and MKE Admiral Stash, a Baltic Porter baby!
I started the night off like normal, two hearted of course, and now I have reason to splurge on some Blanton's for my next drink. Thanks mgoblog!!
growler of Alpine Beer Co.'s Nelson. Pretty tough to get unless you're in the San Diego area. so. good
While Julian Van Winkle was hosting a bourbon dinner in Greenville, SC, one of my good friends approached him and asked him what bourbon he recommended to drink since his stuff was so difficult to find. His response: Elmer T. Lee. It's an excellent bourbon, it's easier to find, and it can be purchased for about $35. Give it a shot next time you are in the market for a new daily drinker.
Unfortunately, I am on call this whole weekend and thus unable to celebrate this day appropriately. Feel free to have an extra drink or two for me. Cheers!
