Happy Birthday Michigan Stadium!

Submitted by InRodWeTrust333 on

On October 1st, 1927, Michigan Stadium hosted its first game against Ohio Wesleyan and won 33-0. Since then there have been many great moments in the Big House, including its rededication game and Brock's Walk this year.Today the stadium celebrates its 83rd birthday. In honor of the stadium, please list your greatest memories from games witnessed inside The Big House. Go Blue!

Notre Dame game '97, Manningham's touch, Ohio State '93, Notre Dame last year, and several others but greatest has to be Ohio State '97. The electricity in the stadium that day was unlike anything I have ever felt. Plus I was in the end zone that Woodson returned the punt to.

See, this is a good forum topic.  Something that gets us all thinking and talking about Michigan football, on a topic that is interesting and somewhat thought provoking.

So much better than the recent topic about things like (1) whether they should watch the game at home or listen to it in their car radio, (2) what our secondary will look like in 2016, (3) who will be the starting QB when Devin is playing in the NFL, (4) whether Denard will be a QB or a left tackle in the NFL, or (5) pure speculations (like do you think that Tate's dad's strong parenting was the reason for some of his immaturite.

I have two sons that attended Michigan...over that span, which ends this year, I will have seen 41 games..counted them (six years) and a Rose Bowl.  I spent at least part of every game with them, although many of those games found them largely in the student section. Maybe it was the walk to the stadium, the walk back, halftime or, on occasion, they would spend the game with me when my wife didn't make the game. Every one of those game meant something special because I celebrated a Michigan football game with my sons, both Michigan men in the truest sense of the word.

It was November 22, 2003.  My first time at the Big House!  What an amazing time!    The 100th playing of The Game.

I was sitting in the student section and it was fantastic.  While i did not go to UM, those around took me in as one of their own!  I remember Chris Perry having a amazing day!  I don't remember the quarter, but I remember he got injured and the entire stadium was chanting his name until he came back out on the field and then we all erupted.   He, Navarre, Edwards all had an great day.  I don't remember stats, just the final score being 35-21, good guys.

After the game, we all rushed the field and everyone that I sat with made sure that I made it down alright.  I remember being within arms reach of Chris Perry when he had the rose in his mouth.

That was truly a great day to be a Michigan Wolverine!!

I'll celebrate all my wins.  My history at the big house:

1985: Win over Indiana 42-15 (I was 5 years old.  Didn't understand football.  But I loved staring at the 100,000 people sitting around me.)

1996: Win over Boston College 20-16 (Driving rainstorm in the second half.  Defensive battle.)

1997: Win over Minnesota 24-3 (Dark homecoming day.  Woodson scores on the reverse!)

1998: Win over Eastern Michigan 59-20 (Tom Brady's first win as a starter.)

1999: Win over Northwestern 37-3 (Marcus Knight, Anthony Thomas and David Terrel score TD's in my end zone.)

2000: Win over Bowling Green 42-7 (John Navarre subs for injured Drew Henson and throws 4 TD's.)

2000:  Win over Indiana 58-0 (Complete domination.  Marquise Walker blocks a punt and runs it in for a score.)

2001:  Win over Miami Ohio 31-13 (Pretty boring opener.)

2001:  Win over WMU 38-21 (The week after September 11th.  Felt good to be back enjoying football after a such an awful week.)

2003:  Win over Houston 50-3 (Steve Breaston scores on a punt return)

2003:  Win over Illinois 56-14 (Steve Breaston scores on a punt return again!)

2004:  Win over Miami Ohio 43-10 (Chad Henne's first start.  He subs for injured Matt  Gutierrez)

2004:  Win over Michigan State 45-37 (Triple overtime thriller.  Sat in the wrong end zone.)

2005:  Win over Northern Illinois 33-17 (Left the stadium calling for Jim Herrman's head.)

2005:  Win over Penn State 27-25 (Henne to Manningham!  Sat in the wrong end zone again.)

2006:  Win over Iowa 20-6 (Hart is the star.)

2006:  Win over Northwestern 17-3 (My toes nearly froze off in the freezing rain.  But I still stayed for the entire game.)

2006:  Win over Ball State 34-26 (Still can't explain this game to this day.  Gorgeous weather though.)

2007:  Win over Minnesota 34-10 (No Henne, no Hart.  But Ryan Mallet and Carlos Brown play great.)

I used to have an 18-0 record at the Big House.  Then I went to the App State game in 07.  My record since then is 1-3.  Now I'm scared to go.
