I flew with Colonel Lousma on a commercial flight days after 9/11. From Detroit to Buffalo, he was continuing to the East Coast. Must have been 10 people max on that plane. We both took aisle seats across from each other and talked about the attacks. We were both veterans and when he said he was a former test pilot I finally figured out just who I was talking with! Spent the rest of the short flight asking him space questions. Cool Skylab stories. He patiently answered all my questions and I was like a kid again. I invited him to my tailgate but I'm sure his are much better! He's a great man, thanks for posting. Happy birthday Colonel!

Jack and his wife are wonderful people; and true Michigan Wolverines.  I have had the pleasure of dinner with Jack and had a similar experience.  He is gracious and amazing to talk with, patiently answers any questions you have (although some answers are still classified!)  Hope you have a great day, Happy 20th!!!

Years ago, I got to meet Jim Lovell at a luncheon. He was there promoting his book, which subsequently was made into the Tom Hanks movie "Apollo 13." He was a very nice, soft-spoken older gentleman - but he had the presence of a total badass, one who had looked death right in the eye and said, "Nope, not today."

I was a huge astronaut fan as a kid, and was a little starstruck. During our brief conversation I called him "Sir," and he replied, "Please, call me Jim."

Not a chance, I thought. You're standing in front of me when, by rights, you should be a frozen satellite permanently orbiting the moon. You're a "Sir" if I've ever met one.

thank you to him and all that served.

The day after Michigan stomped Florida, I had the pleasure to visit NASA and have lunch with an astronaut. These are some of the smartest, nicest, craziest, and most humble SOBs you ever will meet.

Met him at the Flint Airshow back in the 80's.  Signed my program and answered all of our questions.  He asked what I wanted to be when I grew up.  When I told him "astronaut", he replied that I had "better be good at math".

Great guy.

Also, I never became an astronaut.

Lousma is a hero. Sat next to him at the Big House back '84-85 as I was a teenage kid. He talked with me for 20min+ about all things NASA. Plus, he signed a program I had brought for player autographs. I think back now and realize, he probably wanted to watch the practice in peace, but he spent time with me like I was his own kid. I got home, wrote to NASA, and got a astronaut photograph. You knew talking with him; Smart, tough with kindness. Happy Birthday and thank you, Colonial.
