Happy anniversary to Mike Legg

20 years ago today, he scored my favorite all-time hockey goal, not just for its bizarreness, but for the fact that it even occurred to him to try that to tie the game in an NCAA regional final. https://youtu.be/HWBYcugv11s

It was unbelievable.  All of us with the "did you see that"s and the "oh my god"s.

I had to see it again on Sportscenter to believe it despite seeing it go on the scoreboard.

Not only an awesome goal, but timely. We won a one goal game against the Gophers on our way to the national title in 1996. I think Legg's goal tied that game.

Michigan was on a PP at the time.  Miss that, and Minnesota shoots the puck 200 feet to the other end killing tons of time on that PP.  Also, you have to make sure you don't somehow take your stick above the cross bar in the process.  Go too high, but still use some momentum/centripetal force to keep the puck on the stick and bring it back down, and you've committed high sticking that blows the play dead.  The goal itself was amazing.  How/when he did it was more than macho.

I was in college when Legg scored that goal - my friends and I used to play pick-up games a few times a month when we could get ice time.  For the next 2-3 years, I think every one of us tried that goal WAY too many times to the point that it became predictable when anyone was behind the net.  Sadly, I never managed to get one in.

Absolutely awesome goal.

The mid-late 1990's were pretty good times for Michigan sports.

IIRC from Blue Ice, it was someone elses move first, but Legg was the first one to bring it to the national attention. People were like "You can do that with a puck?!". Glad it'll always be known as the Michigan goal

that was 20 years ago. It remains, to this day, one of my all-time top-5 Michigan Amaizing Plays. It's right up there with the AC catch vs IU in '79, the leaping interception by Charles vs. State, the punt return TD by Charles vs OSU in '97, and Elvis-to-Desmond vs ND.

I'm smiling more now than I was 20 years ago listening to the game on my Walkman, because Al and Jim had no freaking IDEA how that goal got scored.

that more players dont try this .....especially on power plays when there are instances where there just isnt as much pressure behind the net.....

I was still living hell -- Ohio. The only place it was shown live was a cable feed in Ann Arbor. I drove up to watch it at my aunties condo. Still the top play ever, but Connors goal the other day is in that class -- both against Minnesota.
