Happy 53rd Anthony Carter

Submitted by Yo_Blue on

Today marks the 53rd birthday of the original and still best #1 jersey wearer.  If that doesn't make some of us feel old, nothing will.

It was great seeing him on the sideline this season, even if he didn't seem to know he was being introduced.  Oblivious or just being cool?  I vote for the latter.

I was near where he was introduced at UTLII and he was engaged in conversation with a student in the crowd. When they put him up on the big board he was a bit distracted and too polite to actively disengage himself, but he certainly knew that he was being introduced. Anyway, happy birthday, AC.

I was helping out with the Michigan band and was on the sideline.  When the play started, the ushers, guards, and band personnel were lining the sideline.  By the time Carter caught the pass, most of us were closing in on the hash marks in order to get a better view.  Still the best single-play ending I have witnessed (I do think the final drive in the UTL game was more dramatic and unexpected).

playing in the MMB; the crowd reaction was the loudest moment I ever experienced in The Big House (before it was called The Big House). Friends on the upper floors of South Quad who missed the game claimed the windows rattled....!

when Carter caught that pass and ran it in. What a great, electric moment. It's still my favorite memory of Michigan football. So happy birthday, Anthony. You made us all very, very happy.

One of my favorite stories of Anthony Carter is one where he left town at the beginning of his freshman year and almost didn't come back.  Brandstatter describes it thusly:

[Carter has been missing for hours and the receivers coach finally finds him in the airport]

"Before you leave, Bo wants to talk to you," Coach Thornbladh told him.

They found a pay phone and dialed Coach Schembechler's number. They put the freshman on the phone.

There was a pause as Carter listened to the coach.

"Uh huh, he muttered. "Uh huh. Uh huh. Okay."

He hung up the receiver and turned to the two older men.

"What did Bo say, Anthony?" Coach Thornbladh asked.

"Bo said I could go home."

So the two coaches left him at the airport, and the wide receiver got on a plane to Florida.

When Coach Thornbladh got home, he called Coach Schembechler.

"Why did you tell Anthony to leave?" he asked.

"I didn't tell him he could leave!" the head coach screamed at his assistant.

Anthony Carter got away from a lot of people, including Bo, it seems.

It's kind of funny that this iconic Michigan moment came in a game that otherwise was reminiscent of Saturday's game - a shockingly close game against Indiana.  I know IU was actually relatively good that year, but certainly a 21-21 tie to them would have been very disappointing.

Loved watching AC play. My friends and I went to a game circa 1980 and we painted a banner hoping to get on television (only a handful of games were televised in those days). The banner read, "1 AC + 5 JW = 6 TD".
