Hakeem Flowers as a prospect
It seems like Michigan coaches are beginning to focus a lot of attention on Flowers, the WR from South Carolina. Hakeem looks like an intriguing prospect with outstanding size and athletic ability. And I think we are making a very solid push for him.
One interesting note that stands out for Hakeem is the contrast between his so-called "ratings" by Rivals/Scout and his offers. Rivals has him as the #75 WR (3*) while Scout has him as the #109 WR (3*).
Meanwhile, his offer list is off the chart. They include offers from Oregon, Auburn, FSU, UM (YTM), ND, Okla, Okla St., UCLA, Tenn and many more. He has taken only 2 officials -- us and Oregon this passed weekend (I'm not sure if he actually went).
Now, I'm not the kind of person who lives and dies by the rankings. But there seems to be a huge disparity here. Is Hakeem the example of a player who accumulated a ton of high-profile offers before his JR year and then had a good but not great JR and SR year?
I would be curious to hear from someone who has watched his game film and might provide a good scouting report on Hakeem as a prospect. Again, he seems like a good kid with great upside and a potential deep threat with this offense.

this happens w/ a few prospects each year. it's been my experience that in these cases the offers are more revealing than the rankings. not to belittle the rankings. they are usually pretty on target.

I thought this was a hello Hakeem thread, kinda sad.

I'm wondering about how you created your avatar. It would be cool to do it for my state but have no idea how to go about it . . .
December 21st, 2010 at 10:40 PM ^
1)Google image search,
2)Adobe Photoshop,
3)Adobe Illustrator, and
4)Just barely enough knowledge of the above three to get myself into and somewhat out of trouble. Six Zero, monuMental or any of a hundred other people on this blog could make the concept look SO MUCH better, but...I'm happy with how it turned out.
So...I guess if you're curious about my unskilled trial and error, you can get ahold of me at sgtwolve at the domain of sgtwolverine dot com.

ESPN has Hakeem as the #26, 4* WR
Also Magnus has him as the #5 WR on his "If I had my Druthers" list, saying
Good athleticism. Not afraid to go over the middle. Doesn't adjust well to the ball in the air, doesn't high point the ball, catches with his body.
December 21st, 2010 at 11:41 AM ^
Well then, if Magnus is that high on him, he must be the second coming of Jerry Rice...
December 21st, 2010 at 11:46 AM ^
Whether you like Magnus as a person or not, he's still better at evaluating talent than 98% of the board.

It was more of a joke -- at least I didn't include the /gospel tag.
December 21st, 2010 at 11:50 AM ^
I like Magnus, but some of the jokes about him are hysterical. I crack up at all of the /gospel tagged posts

P.S. I like Magnus as a person just not as an anonymous internet poster.

Yep. Anytime someone mentions my name, you can bet His Dudeness will be there to make a disaparaging comment. He's constantly trying to find me. He's like Lindsay Lohan, and my handle is a line of coke.

Well, you're just so self-important around here.
December 21st, 2010 at 12:16 PM ^
Self-important? You post about me almost as much as I post about me. So far you've dragged me into two threads that I've read today (not this one), threads in which I had never even posted.
December 21st, 2010 at 12:25 PM ^
Whenever you and Dudeness argue, I picture Brandon Graham and Woodson going after each other, and I laugh a little bit.
Thanks

Huh? Maybe I missed when that happened.
EDIT: Avatars...FML.

How do you feel about the DG medical redshirt? Does it make you feel vindicated because he finally got it or sheepish because the coaching staff knew what they were doing all along and you made a huge stink about how you thought they were stupid for playing him?
/blasphemy
December 21st, 2010 at 12:46 PM ^
It doesn't make me feel anything, because he hasn't been awarded a redshirt yet.
Good try, though.
December 21st, 2010 at 12:54 PM ^
Does it make you feel like a real recruiting analyst because you have a Scout and or Rivals account?
Do you think that by watching a video on your Rivals and or Scout account that you could tell me if Hakeem Flowers is "quick" or "slow" in your estimation?
I take your advice because you may or may not have assistant coached special teams on the local .500 junior high school football team last season. It's important to me that my advice come from an expert.
I'll hang up and listen.

I think he's jealous of your points, Magnus.
I like CWood better than BG, so this is tough for me.
December 21st, 2010 at 1:21 PM ^
Magnus is pissed that those refs wouldn't grant a medical redshirt to his QB.
December 21st, 2010 at 9:24 PM ^
That happened more than once in my son's 5-6 year old league this year. Very sad and it does have a big impact on the kids.
December 21st, 2010 at 1:17 PM ^
It's like you are transcribing my thoughts that I'm always too lazy to type out re: Magnus. This places you deeper into auto upvote territory.
December 21st, 2010 at 12:55 PM ^
How about you wait to see if he get's a medical redshirt before declaring him to be eligble for another 4 years.

He was actually #5 out of 9 ranked receivers. And three of those kids have since committed, so he would be #3 out of 6 right now.
December 21st, 2010 at 11:48 AM ^
I don't think that's the case here. My guess is while look looking at his offer list that many of those schools offered him but very few of them actually kept on recruiting him. Just like Michigan has cooled on many offered prospects and didn't recruit them, it appears that many of those schools have done the same here. The mods over at rivals have said much of the same thing. Look at his list of schools he's considering at the top and then look at the list of schools that he has offers from but isn't interested in. They don't add up.
December 21st, 2010 at 11:50 AM ^
He's definitely one to watch.

Could be another Roy Roundtree type prospect, except no snake oil required.
December 21st, 2010 at 12:10 PM ^
I see him as different type of WR then Roundtree. He is porbably more of an outside WR that could blend well with Roundtree.
December 21st, 2010 at 12:10 PM ^
would be happy with him, happier with lucien but can't go wrong with him tho!
