They should set some parameters (nothing that reminds you of Notre Dame), organize some help for students and open up a competition for videos to be played at the stadium, things like the stuff they do now.

But guys, it's ORGANIC(TM)!

Something this ORGANIC(TM) should be supported because it's ORGANIC(TM).

Did I mention it was ORGANIC(TM)?

If they had introduced this a year ago, it might have stood a chance. DB would have loved himself some ORGANIC(TM) Brand Enhancement.

Back in my day when you wanted to make a song about the University you just fucking made it.  Screw getting CSG approval, do what you love and do it well, and the rest will follow.

So their next step, according to their website, is crowdfunding. I really hope they go with Kickstarter, not one of the other ones where you get funding even if you don't reach your goal, and I really hope they don't reach their goal.

They aren't getting U funding so it no longer matters to me.

If people want to pay their own money so someone else can create a party video that is the same as all the other videos of michgan students partying (shmacked, PwP, etc) than let them. It is nothing new.

The biggest thing is there is NO WAY a video of students getting drunk is played in the big house. The second the second prom came out, I was no longer worried.

I'd like to add an amendment to the proposal: "Whoomp! There it is" is played after TDs and or 3-point shots.

A hoodie when trying to get approval/funding?  Is that the type of culture that Ross is breeding?  Everyone thinks they are Palo Alto based internet start up and can wear Rainbows and cargo shorts while getting a million dollar investment?

Tuck in your damn shirt, pull up your damn pants, and put on a damn tie for once in your life.

People loved (or didn't know who we was) Big Sean at the basketball game last week.  What if he was able to do a cool intro video for the basketball team before lineups?  They would play The Victors when the team first comes out, then before lineups they play the Big Sean rap.  Would be very cool for the players/recruits.

Nobody around me had any idea who that guy was, but I guess I'm old. I thought he kind of sucked as a basketball announcer, though. He was very one note, drawing out the last syllable every time, not to mention that you'd think he'd be able to memorize 5 names instead of having to read them.

Great creative minds don't set out with the intent of creating great works of art. Tolkien didn't sit down one day and say "I think I will write one of the greatest modern fantasy works of our time today!" No, he flipped over a linguistics paper he was grading and he wrote "in a hole in the ground..." Great traditions are the same. They don't commence because a committee set out to create them. Kids these days...

What are you talking about? You can scoff at the thought of a second fight song and discuss what a terrible idea Hail & Unite is (believe me, I'm on board with that), but how can you possibly know what "strong desire to be connected to something great" they have? Or, for that matter, whether they "want to do something meaningful" or not? Maybe to the students involved, this project is very meaningful.

they're college kids, they're not supposed to be connected to real world problems. It's the beauty of being in college. It's one of the only times in life that you get to pursue basically any endeavor that sparks your interest with little to no consequences. That's what exploration is all about. Sounds like if they pull this off to its entirety it would be a huge exercise in a number of real world applications--putting together a team, developing a business plan, pitching for and acquiring funding, presenting to governing bodies, handling PR fallout, managing talent and producing a product. That's just to name a few. If it sucks or fails who cares? Sure some kids do Habitat for Humanity or that alternative spring break but most go get trashed for a week on a beach to nobody's benefit but their own. This isn't some selfish, dickish exercise, they're trying to give the larger community something special. Sure it might not be special and it might not be needed but why squash their effort? That sounds pretty selfish because it's against your own preference--then admonishing them for being selfish? That doesn't quite jive.

Generally, discussions about doing "meaningful" things don't go down like this:

"Let's write a great new song for University sporting events!"

"Hey great idea!  Actually, you know what?   Let's OUTSOURCE that to someone else and form a 17-member executive committee to ask for funding for the outsourcing and for creating a documentary about how we created a great new song for University sporting events!".

When you are trying to do something "meaningful", usually step 1 is to not outsource the "meaningful" part of the project to someone else.

That's, like, your opinion, man. Maybe you're right, and maybe you're not. But unless Magnus has the ability to discern the motives and minds of college students, then he's speaking for them without really knowing what he's talking about. Dismissively commenting about how 'these darn kids don't want to do anything meaningful' is arrogant, condescending, and unnecessary.

These kids want to use someone else's money to make something they can put their names on but not create. What Magnus said was pretty spot on. If they wanted to do something meaningful, they should have, you know, actually done something meaningful. They have this amazing idea that they want to pay someone else to complete and put their name on. How was Magnus wrong again?

Because he's assuming he knows what they're thinking and what their motivations are, and whether they "want to do something meaningful" without actually having any idea. What if their goal is simply to connect with an artist and facilitate the creation of this song? You just describe the role of a Producer in every film/song. You don't have to be the actual artist to feel like your role in the creation of a project is meaningful. Who is Magnus or you or any of us to say whether that is something "meaningful" to them?

I'm still struggling to see what they are contributing. Don't producers bring something to the table other than "I like music, you should give me money"? How does this sound-I'll go on shark tank and tell them all I have this great idea for a flying car. Then, when they ask me what I bring to the table, I'll say I have talked to a bunch of people and they think it's a great idea. I'll let them know that I haven't done any testing, I don't have any specific plans, nor do I have any sales. I'll tell them they should pay me money so that I can be a project manager and use their money to hire the people who will develop the flying car. They will then laugh at me, as they should, because I have actually done nothing meaningful. If someone with talent wants to make a song to unite Michigan fans, what do they need this committee for? And Magnus doesn't need to tell you what's meaningful, I think not finding this horrible idea is enough to let them know what they are doing isn't meaningful
