"Hail Mary" comparisons

Submitted by SaigonBlue on

Having watched the ASU "Hail Mary" over USC Saturday night, and then of course seeing it replayed multiple times since, I think there is merit to "rate" it as a much larger defensive debacle than that of the Michigan defensive failures in the Colorado "Hail Mary".

While there were multiple blunders by Michigan's defensive backs, at least there was an "effort".

Compare that effort with the USC defensive backs who stood still as if they were playing a game of "500" (does that game exist anymore?) while the uninvited neighborhood knucklehead ran across their game to steal the ball.  The USC players were left staring as if he did something that wasn't fair...

The USC players were not doing what they should have been taught.  It was a debacle on their part (though yes, a good play by that manimal of a receiver for ASU).

Is this a serious response?  If not, sorry for the misinterpretation.  If so...then coaches are fucking dumb.  A defensive player doesn't just wait for a ball to fall into his hands on a Hail Mary play like that and honestly, a player shouldn't need coaching to figure that out.  It was a really bad defensive play.

Unless I am not remembering correctly, there is nothing substantial to compare. Michigan lost due to a great, but lucky offensive play. USC lost due to a lack of defense by a player that might not even be a defensive back.

He tried to catch the ball when he should have gone to bat it down.  Not that the play wasn't lucky (and even had he given it his all, he might not have succeeded--as great as he obviously was), but I think there's a reason why we haven't given up a similar play since.

I was there, and every time I see a similar play I think "bat the ball down!"

...is that Kordell Stewart is a radio personailty on the afternoon drive show for an FM station in Atlanta.

Ty Law is the best cornerback the New England Patriots ever had (he's in their team Hall Of Fame and PROBABLY ends up in the NFL HOF as well).

I'll see you and raise, Slash.

I am sure many of us have the 1994 Colorado game seared into our memories, but here is the ASU Hail Mary being referenced. As Soulfire21 said, "What the shit was USC's defense doing?" I think that's a good question.

they were just sitting back in the end zone with their arms up ready to catch the ball. That ball hung up forever and it should have been easy to knock down.

Ever notice how often these miracle hail Mary's are almost always won by the road team? Doug Flutie and Boston College winning at Miami, Nick Saban's LSU team winning the Bluegrass miracle at Kentucky, Northwestern at Minnesota several years back, Kordell Stewart at the big house, ASU at USC. In Michigan's case, I guess our game ending hail Mary would be Dresibach to Mercury Hayes against Virginia...although that would probably be a mini-hail Mary. We also had halftime hail Mary's, Demtrious Brown to Greg McMurtry against Iowa in '87 and Todd Collins to Amani Toomer against NC State in the 93 bowl game but those are never as exciting as game enders.

have "Hail Mary" wins this year, with RichRod's Wildcats beating Cal with one just two weeks ago. (Arizona was at home, FWIW.)

I also just found this updated Wikipedia page listing "Hail Marys" in American Football:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hail_Mary_passes_in_American_footb…

Interestingly, though it could be a function of increased media coverage, successful "Hail Marys" look to be coming more prevalent in the game.

put the slow-footed ILB Steve Morrison out on the field for that last play against Colorado. It wasn't to rush the passer; we only sent three linemen against Stewart. Did he think that Colorado was going to run the ball? Maybe if we'd had another DB out there he might have the one to knock down the ball. Still burns my ass.

isn't even close to the 94 one for the simple fact that ASU's QB threw from his own 45 yard line and Kordell threw from either his own 25 or 35 yard line...
