Hagerup returning home [with edits]
http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2013/07/punter_will_hagerup_will_retur.html
according to this kyle meinke article, will hagerup won't be on campus this year. instead he'll return to his hometown in wisconsin, where he has an internship. although the article doesn't say so, it appears that he still plans to come back to michigan once his suspension is over.
[edit]: it's been pointed out below that i misread the article, and the points below are correct. hagerup will practice with the team, but won't be on campus for the beginning of fall camp.
Ugh. This kid needs to get his head out of his ass. He is a great punter.
I assume this means he had his schollarship revoked for the 2013 season and his suspension wasn't just football? Offered a schollarship for 2014 if he meets the "get out of the doghouse" requirements...
I always assumed that if a player was suspended from the team they were still on schollarship. Stonum stayed on campus when he was suspended... did he pay his own way for that year?
My interpretation of the article was that he will practice with the team (and presumably be a student) this season, but will not practice during fall camp only.
"Will Hagerup won't suit up for Michigan this season, he is expected to practice.
But he won't be with the team for the start of fall camp Aug. 5."
I think you are correct. The OP's statement that he "plans to come back to Michigan after his suspension is over" is not correct and confused me.
Title also suggests he is going home..... for good.
Ish... you should write for the Free Press. You've got the gift to capture attention and twist the story to drum up further interest
Might provide him the time to collect himself both athletically and academically. Lots of students need to take a term or more off to refocus for success.
I took a semester off between transferring from the school I was attending my freshman year and Michigan. My parents were highly against it, and still, 25 years later, refer to it as "dropping out." I got a job and did, in fact, refocus. I did very well at Michigan and graduated on time, even with the one off semester. So, it can be beneficial.
Yikes, looks like it's gonna be a rough day for me on the board. Of course plenty of people do it successfully, but I'd still bet the odds are against it. College isn't for everyone and that's fine. Wasn't right for Steve Jobs and he did ok.
I still think its safe to say that the majority of people who take time off, usually do not return (I've seen people a year away from graduating do this). Those who have a plan (e.g. small school to Michigan or Out of State school to home) usually are your successful ones.
That was probably my parents' biggest fear - that I wouldn't return. But I knew what I was doing, and had already been accepted to Michigan when I left the other school. Also, once leaving becomes a way to solve a problem, it can become your go-to MO. So I may have been in the minority.
"CHICAGO -- Although reigning Big Ten punter of the year Will Hagerup won't suit up for Michigan this season, he is expected to practice."
Just not going to be at preseason camp.
Isn't he just returning home for the summer? So he'll miss camp but will be on campus in the fall for school and practice.
Although reigning Big Ten punter of the year Will Hagerup won't suit up for Michigan this season, he is expected to practice.
But he won't be with the team for the start of fall camp Aug. 5.
He's spending time in Wisconsin during Fall Camp, but returning for the fall for school and practices. At least that's the way it reads. I fully doubt he would be taking a full year off of school.
No matter where Will may roam he can lay claim to something not many have achieved. Internet Imortality!
to rub salt in it. This kid made some great punts for us too...how about showing one of those?
Sadly a "great punt" or even a lifetime of great punts does not grant one internet immortality.
my favorite part is the unconscious quick-step shimmy of panic.
Speaking objectively, that gif is hilarious. Also, punt highlights? C'mon, man.
...just see no reason to pile on.
But that punt attempt keeps on giving.
IMHO, this article is nothing more than an attempt to make a bigger story out of something that isn't that earth shaking, considering that Hagerup won't be playing this season. When your second sentence is the second paragraph all by itself:
"But he won't be with the team for the start of fall camp Aug. 5."
it gives the clear impression that there's something ominous happening, which is contradicted by the opening paragraph.
Ewing Theory potential
You can only have a certain number of players report for the start of Fall camp. You can then add more at a later date before the season starts (this is when non-preferred walk-ons usually join the team). This has been explained to us in relation to guys like Bell and Wilkins, who despite being scholarship players, were asked to not report to Fall camp because there were walk-ons who were more deserving and valuable to the team to be getting practice reps. These players of course saw the writing on the wall and left the program.
There would be absolutely positively NO reason to let Hagerup attend Fall camp. He'd be a wasted spot if he can't play this season. After Fall camp, he can report like a walk-on and rejoin the team without penalty.
the large majority of so-called "professional journalists" in all fields are fundamentally lazy hacks who can't be bothered to put in the effort to makes themselves, much less the readers, aware of basic information about the topic they're bloviating about.
I didn't know that there was a numerical limit on the number of fall camp attendees, but I'm not a goddamn sports "journalist" who gets paid to cover the field full-time. That information—otherwise known as context— imparts a completely different meaning to Hagerup's not attending fall camp than the feeble attempt at sensationalizing his non-participation that Meinke engages in.
If I had a great opportunity at an internship (which are usually 12-week appointments) and wasn't going to play this fall, I'd take the internship and show up when classes start, too.
Shoot, the NFL is full of kickers and punters who were selling Lady Kenmores at Sears and just tried out for a spot and became life-long starters. Being a great college punter/kicker doesn't seem to be a prerequisite for a job at the professional level.
