Hackett on coaching position: "The interest has blown me away"

"Michigan interim athletic director Jim Hackett wasn't sure what to expect when he went into the search to replace Brady Hoke.

But in just a week, one where he said he's been working hard, he's seen the results.

"The interest has blown me away," he told the Free Press at tonight's Michigan Football Bust at the Laurel Manor in Livonia.

Pressed for more details, Hackett gave a wry smile, refusing to divulge his recent travel plans."

"His point was that it would be a little odd for Hackett to try to drum up interest in the Michigan job when almost everyone who coaches knows 1) what the job is, and 2) tgat it's open."

I would have been shocked if Hackett had answered the question with "you know it's a bit lukewarm out there."   There was only 1 answer for Hackett to give.  He gave it.  The analysis of every throwaway line as some key clue is reaching 2008 Federal Reserve statement levels.

So let me get this straight. In this thread, you incorrectly characterized someone else's comment, ranted about a point that no one other than you was making, analyzed the Hackett line by saying it was his job to drum up interest in the job, then complained about people analyzing throwaway lines? Maybe you should sit the next couple plays out champ.

but that really is laughable. It's not like he's sitting back taking applications for the job and realized there weren't enough. A group of people are identifying candidates and then contacting them. You said it yourself, it's a top 15 job that pays millions. Candidates don't go to Hackett, he will go to them if he is interested.

I'm sure he's getting calls, but does it matter if they're from the like schiano, Addazio, etc. hopefully it means bob stoops, possibly mora, (although I'm skeptical of him), Sean Payton, etc.

Probably means that things really are going well. If things weren't going well you'd think that a potential CC would see that statement and say well they're set. Although I don't think he'd publicly say that the coaching search is going terribly. Of course going well could mean Schano or Addazio or some other .500 coaching candidate. These people haven't really thought clearly in these coaching searches at Michigan in the past. Their top priorities of the last coaching search were has he ever coached at Michigan before, will he be nice to the players and not cuss at them, how much is he going to tutor them on their schoolwork, with winning games going a distant 4th.

On the other and, if it weren't going good, does anybody think he'd admit that? I could see it, "yeah, so far we have got some calls from some schiano and Addazio guy, other than that, the phone lines have been dead." Either way, this is a smart thing to say. However, if we end up hiring Greg schiano, he will be criticized for statements like this. People will just be more pissed that supposedly there was a lot of interest, but we chose Schiano or something! Risky statement.

Or a fox in henhouse statement!  I'm going with that.

Was very happy to hear on Brian's front page story that Harbaugh was watching the OSU game.  I commented in the game thread this game has to be killing Harbaugh and someone else said he is probably not watching.   So I was glad that he was.  Unlike all of us, who can only sufffer, he can do something about that.  And it has to kill him to watch that.

"That right mental attitude is doing what you've got to do. One thing about Bo, he would tell you, this is the way we want it done, that way every time, that time all the time. Hopefully we can find the right guy who can convey that to a group of 17, 18, 19 year old kids."

I smiled a little bit when I read this particular part of the quote because he is right - this sort drive to improve and this intensity has been missing. Among other things, I want this sort of attitude to return.
