Gut Check - Devin Gardner

Submitted by MGoPony on

Found an interesting blog article about the 'monumental task before Devin Gardner'. Was particularly amused to see the comment on extrapolating last season's performance in light of the argument in favor of Gallon receiving the #1 jersey and the enormous expectations many of us here have for Devin this year.

How close do you think Devin will come to his sky-high potential? What factors do you think will have the biggest impact on his success?

I was worried as hell that Devin injured himself filming his most recent Vine video.

It just reads together like some pieced together human interest story that AnnArbor.com spit out as click bait for content hungry football fans.  No new information, no new source material to discuss Gardner's progress, etc.  Just the standard "this season is important/just having fun out there/etc".  I'll second the all bark, no bite.  The author clearly has some writing chops but needs to deliver content to go with it.

And as a pet peeve, "It goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyways" is not the best way to phrase things, ever (and I say this being a former offender in this category).

In general I agree, but at this point in the season there isnt any 'new information' and there really wont be unless something terrible happens.

What I like about this article is that it brings up a perspective most don't; the fact that expectations are enormous and that we should remember he is just a kid. Most articles are the typical pump up, everything is rainbows fluff because thats what fans want to hear- NOT the perspective that fans might be putting too much pressure on a 21 year old who could very well actually fail.

I respect a person who blogs about football and magic the gathering.  I often get stares when I'm in a group of friends that love one of those subjects, and the other happens to come up.  The two are a rare mix; they may not be on this board, but in the the greater world, those two subjects rarely intertwine.

I get the same, then I destroy them with my red/bue control/burn deck (plus all flying creatures so I can use things like Earthquake and Mudslid with impunity).  Once my status as alpha geek has been reaffirmed they must bow down and listen to me talk about how our All American left tackle got a pig.

Just when I think it's only me "hiding" my nerdiness behind football statistics. Side note: Have you tried the xbox/ps3/pc version. It plays pretty well and doesnt cost much (unlike the cards) new this year is actual closed pack deck building.

I need to check those out.  One of the reasons I don't play anymore is the cost of the new cards.  I have a group I play with, with no set restrictions, but we just don't get together as much as I liked to for game nights.  I'm going to look into those, thanks.

I mostly play EDH magic (really fun format if you've ever tried it).  I half-assedly follow the competitive scene but I realized 16(!) years ago that playing competitively was too money- and time-intensive for me

I feel the whole competitve scene is there to force you to buy new expansions (thus cash flow) and the older expansions are outlawed simply because Wizard of the Coast was too lazy to take the effort and ensure broken combos didn't emerge by combining cards across various editions.  I have Ice Age, Homelands, and The Dark cards in my deck and if you don't like it, feel free to pick your cards up and go to another table.  Just be careful my Shivan doesn't bit your ass on your way out.

I loved this part; Between the whistles however Gardner's eyes smolder behind a mask of grim determination. There is no joy in this man's actions; he plays with a chip on his shoulder brought on perhaps by being forced to wait so long for his chance at glory.

I couldn't get past the first paragraph because the whole premise is contrived. It's pretty clear from interviews and just his general personality that Devin is not feeling any of those things she listed. I haven't gotten the sense at all that there's an unusual amount of pressure on him.

There is no mistaking that Denard was exactly what we needed over the last few years to try to recover from the utter destruction of every record that our school held so dear. That being said, however, I have been so excited to see this offense be built around someone who was a quarterback who could run as opposed to a running back who could throw. I love DRob and sincerely thank him for all that he did on and off the field but lets face it, he was not much of a threat on passing downs unless there were angels in the field with him. Devin seems to be a really good next step for our program and i am very excited for the future.

The article was full of strawman arguments (like the one that fans really expect 3,000 yards passing, etc) and absurd assertions (like the one that fans don't realize that it isn't 1997 any more).  It was well-written, but it was an article about a football player that doesn't exist, in a fantasy football world.  Devin Gardner certainly has some challenges ahead, but having "a maximum of two years to prove he belongs in the NFL" isn't one of them.
