Gunner Kiel commits to Indiana

Submitted by Dreisbach1817 on

Possibly the biggest football recruiting commitment in Indiana history.  Will make the "Leaders" division very interesting in the next 4 years.

JC Shurburtt- Nation's top quarterback Gunner Kiel commits to #Indiana per @SWiltfong247

This reminds me of when Tim Couch commited to Kentucky.  Can anyone think of a top 1 or 2 national QB going to a similar program?

As a Hoosier and an Indiana University graduate, I can assure you we have never had a recruit this big choose IU.  The last time we were even respectable for more than a single year was during the Mallory era and Anthony Thompson, while a very good prospect, had nowhere near the hype Kiel does.   Hell, most of my friends are excited when we geta borderline 3* at any position or even just a lot of dudes choosing IU, regardless of ranking.

Maybe we can finally win something besides the tailgate in the next four years!

Does this mean the all the recruiting "experts" will drop his ranking since Indiana isn't a football powerhouse?  Good luck in the future except when playing Michigan of course.

Maybe the plan is to have him redshirt behind his brother for a year after his arrival.......Keep peace in the family plus maybe get him some more players knowing he will be there for 4 years after that....

Or at least 3 years.  Likely he and his brother get along pretty well and that will make whatever goes on easier to deal with.  Kind of a nice and safe and warm blanket for coming into college football....

Maybe this will help their attendance.  One player is not going to change that football program, but he will be the BMOC.  They've had a decent offense for the last few seasons, but we all know what wins games and championships!

I applaud him for not going to any of our rivals!

Go Blue!

Interesting strategy - will have the reigns and attention of a major program with little worry of 4 and 5 star qbs coming in year after year behind him.  If he can be a major agent of improvement for them he will have a great platform for his future.  Good for Indiana - they need a little positive stuff every now and then.

The UM diehard and, also, jerk inside me wants to say something extra sarcastic along the lines of 'hey, sounds like a real fighter,' etc.

But the less-jerky part of me realizes this is a young man with the biggest possible decision he'll ever make on his hands, and wanting above all else to find a place to call home.  Must have been a gut-wrenching decision, especially when the final choice turns out to be Indiana.  Football.

But if that's where he feels comfortable, good for him and I wish him luck.  Except when we play him.

Personally, I'd rather he commit to Alabama. We play Indiana again in a few years and, who knows, Kiel might be good enough to actually give them a chance to beat UM...not a very good chance, but a chance.

This rocks. Great for Indiana. If not Michigan, I would rather him be at Indiana.

Wouldn't it be grand if OSU/Penn State/ Wisconsin had to fear Indiana? This may start something there in my opinion.

There's a lot of reasons he'd go to Indiana. Close to home, family on the team, shot at early playing time, new coach who was a kickass OC, etc.

Weird to see a 5* QB go to Indiana but not as big a surprise in this case as some might think.

When in history has the #1 recruit in the nation - a quarterback to boot - committed to play at a program the likes of Indiana?  This has got to be the "get" of a lifetime for IU's coach and the program in general.  I knew kids that chose smaller-name schools because they felt that they would shine there but geez!  Well, I guess he's chosen a place where he'll almost definitely be a starter and quickly.  Something to be said for that, I guess.  And Bloomington is a great campus.  But still . . .
