In the Bear Bryant Award announced tonight, in which Hoke was a finalist for, Mike Gundy of OK state won out. I know a few people have asked and there's really no info anywhere on it, so this is the news that just broke per tweet by some random Houston Chronicle reporter. Oh well, he'll just have to shoot for it again next year...
Gundy beats out Hoke (and others) for Bear Bryant Award
Blatant ageism. You're only a contender for this award if you're 40.
Well I think he's 41 or 42 by now, but still a man!
He's 44 now. That rant seems more recent than it was, probably because people are still making references to it several years later.
Sexist as well. You have to be a man.
Yeah, like the guy with the 28-year-old quarterback is really going to benefit from ageism. COME ON!
Whoa you got a little preposition happy there OP. And Gundy could go another 40 years without pooping as much gold as Hoke did in one season. Sham of an award.
eh, as long as les miles didn't win it
Did he call Hoke "FAT"?!
Better than Les Miles, who did a good job but also had a stacked roster. Who were the other finalists? Does anyone know?
Well, I suppose Gundy did earn the award. Had a great season, kicked the crap out of Oklahoma, and beat a very good Stanford team. The only real knocks against him are Iowa State and not fielding much of a defense, but its hard to argue with the final results. Hopefully Hoke pushed him for a close second.
Way for being a man, Gundy.
- Nick Saban, #1 Alabama
- Art Briles, #12 Baylor
- Dabo Swinney, #22 Clemson
- Bill Snyder, #16 Kansas State
- Les Miles, #2 LSU
- Brady Hoke, #9 Michigan
- Mike Gundy, #3 Oklahoma State
- David Shaw, #7 Stanford
- Kevin Sumlin, #14 Houston
- Bret Bielema, #11 Wisconsin
Rankings are final Coaches Poll.
Alabama coach Nick Saban, who guided the Crimson Tide to this year's BCS championship, was on the original list of finalists released on Dec. 14, but because a scheduling conflict prevented his attendance at the ceremony, he was eliminated from consideration.
You must be present to win.
You clearly can't be the best coach in the country if you can't make it to the awards ceremony.
Bear Bryant never had 70 hung on him in a bowl game. Take his name out slap in Mark Hudspeth.
BCS MNC karma.
Oh well I guess someone else had to win a coach of the year award. How many did the Hokester win this year anyway? It wasn't because Gundy was a better coach, they did it because of the jealousy Hoke was creating among other coaches taking all of their hardware
To be fair, I rather like Gundy. There are much worse coaches out there.
Didn't it turn out that the famous speech was actually about a kid he kind of left hanging out to dry without any explanation? I remember reading an article about it a couple months after that presser. Something like he stood up for the original starter he's talking about and then pulled him for the rest of the season without ever talking to him about it or giving him an explanation. Correct me if I'm wrong, which is very possible, but I know there was something shady going on.
That could be. I honestly don't remember the details of how everything went down, but living in Oklahoma City I will say that the Pokes love them some Gundy.
Granted, wins produce fan acknowledgement whether the dude is a dick or not. I don't see him leaving any time soon.
Eh, whatever. I doubt Hoke cares.
Gundy deserved the award. He also deserved a chance to watch his team play LSU this postseason, but that's a different story altogether. Coach of the year doesn't happen unless you are in the top three or four.
Brady Hoke will probably win at least one while he is here, if this season's performance is any indication. Who knows: it could happen for the 2012 season with a few breaks along the way. The offense will get better because Denard will be in his second year running this offense. The defense might tread water, but you never know who is going to step up.
Opening against Alabama could be an impediment, but a victory there will start Michigan off in the top five at the very least. It would be a very tough road, but their schedule would ensure a very good ranking if they only lose one game or (gasp) run the table.
It's GARBAGE! And the people who gave out the award are GARBAGE!
Makes me wanna PUKE.
If i could +2 this comment, I would
although I think Hoke derserved it more. But really, who cares? It is just a trophy. I dont think it parlays into any hard cash for the winner.
He's a man! He's 40!
